Definitions

  • This invention relates to a glassmaking machine having dual cylinder press plungers.
  • One object of the invention is to provide an arrangement of hydraulically operated press plungers for a glassmalting machine in which two articles at a time can be pressed at a pressing station of the machine by an arrangement of two press plungers to enter a pair of molds and press the ware therein to shape, the plungers being individually hydraulically controlled and coordinated in their action by inter-connected hydraulical motors in the hydraulic supply lines to the cylinder and piston mechanisms that operate the plungers, the motors being disconnectable in case only one of the plungers is to be used.
  • Another object is to provide cylinder and piston operating means for the plungers which include supporting mechanism for guide rings that coact with the molds ahead of the plunger press operation and are held in contact with the molds by reason of hydraulic pressure trapped in accumulators so that the plungers can continue their movement and perform press and dwell operation by further movement of the pistons in the cylinders, and will subsequently and sequentially raise the plungers from Contact with the ware and release the guide rings from the molds and elevate them away therefrom.
  • Still another object is to provide a pneumatically controlled hydraulic circuit for the operation of the plungers.
  • a further object is to provide kick-up mechanism at the take-out station of the glassware forming machine for elevating the ware out of the mold so .that take-out tongs can cooperate therewith for removing the ware from the machine.
  • my invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of my glassmaking machine having dual cylinder press plungers, whereby the objects above contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims and illustrated in detail on the accompanying drawings wherein:

25 Claims. (Ci. 49-38) This invention relates to a glassmaking machine having dual cylinder press plungers.
One object of the invention is to provide an arrangement of hydraulically operated press plungers for a glassmalting machine in which two articles at a time can be pressed at a pressing station of the machine by an arrangement of two press plungers to enter a pair of molds and press the ware therein to shape, the plungers being individually hydraulically controlled and coordinated in their action by inter-connected hydraulical motors in the hydraulic supply lines to the cylinder and piston mechanisms that operate the plungers, the motors being disconnectable in case only one of the plungers is to be used.
Another object is to provide cylinder and piston operating means for the plungers which include supporting mechanism for guide rings that coact with the molds ahead of the plunger press operation and are held in contact with the molds by reason of hydraulic pressure trapped in accumulators so that the plungers can continue their movement and perform press and dwell operation by further movement of the pistons in the cylinders, and will subsequently and sequentially raise the plungers from Contact with the ware and release the guide rings from the molds and elevate them away therefrom.
Still another object is to provide a pneumatically controlled hydraulic circuit for the operation of the plungers.
A further object is to provide kick-up mechanism at the take-out station of the glassware forming machine for elevating the ware out of the mold so .that take-out tongs can cooperate therewith for removing the ware from the machine.
Still a further object is to provide the plunger actuating mechanism with adjustment for different sizes of ware, and the kick-up mechanism also adjustable to take care of variations in ware size.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of my glassmaking machine having dual cylinder press plungers, whereby the objects above contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims and illustrated in detail on the accompanying drawings wherein:

Fig. 5A is a continuation of the right hand end of Fig. 5 and shows the hydraulic and air diagram for the rest of the machine; and
Fig. 6 is a typical timing diagram for the operation of the machine disclosed.
On the accompanying drawings I have used the refeience numeral 10 to indicate the base on which the mechanism of my glass making machine is mounted, the base being wheel-mounted as indicated at 12 (see Fig. 2). The base 10 has a bottom plate 14 which supports a center post 16 and a suitable anged hub 17.
A table 18 has a hub- 20 which is rotatably mounted by means of a lower bearing 22 and an upper bearing 24 on the center post 16. A pair of out- posts 26 and 28 are also mounted on the base 10 and are connected by means of a triangular head 30 with the center post 16. The head 3d is vertically slidable for adjustment purposes on the posts 16, 26 and'28.
To secure adjustment- I thread each of the posts 16, 26 and 28 as indicated at 32 (see Fig. 4) and on the threads of the post 26A I screw a worm gear nut 34. This nut has a sprocket 36 connected therewith. On the threads ot' each of the posts16 and 28 is a sprocket nut 38 and a sprocket 36. The worm gear nut 34 and the two sprocket nuts 38 are connected together for simultaneous rotation by a chain 40 extending around the three sprockets 36. A guard 41 is provided for the chain 40.
A worm i2nieshes with the worm gear nut 34 as shown in Fig. 4 and is mounted on a worm shaft 44 located within a housing 48 for the Vworm gear nut and the worm, and has a squared end 50 outside of the housing as shown in Fig. l so that an adjusting crank can be connected therewith for rotating the shaft 44. Before adjustment, lock nuts 46 011 each of the threads 32 above the head 30 must be loosened and after adjustment, they may be retightened to insure that the head remains in the position to which it was adjusted. The purpose of the adjustment is to adapt the machine to the pressing of ware of diderent heights.
The table 18 is provided with mold receiving holes V52 to receive Various molds 54 in aninterchangeable man.- ner. For cooperation with each ware mold 54 is a ware plunger 56 (see Fig. 2) and the supporting mechanism for these plungers will be described later.
At a charging station of the machine ahead of the head 30 (the direction of rotation in Fig. l being clockwise) are funnels 58 for receiving gobs of glass fromy the glass melting furnace. These gobs of course, are sheared off at properly timed intervals in relation to the table E8 which is rotated intermittently in the usual manner. A series of nozzles 60 and 62 is provided for cooling the inner circleu of molds S4 and another series of nozzles 64 and 66 is provided for cooling the outer circle of molds. These nozzles receive air from the hollow interior 70 of the table 18 to which air is supplied from an air supply intake 68. Suitable dampers are provided as illustrated to properly control and proportion the air as required by the particular ware being pressed in the machine.
The drive motor for the table 13 is shown at 72 in Fig. l and through a variable speed drive 74, drives the Geneva mechanism for actuating the table 18. This, however, is conventional and forms no part of my present invention. Accordingly, it is not illustrated in detail. A timer '76 is shown for timing various Valves of the machine as will hereinafter appear and it is also driven by the motor 72.
In the particular machine illustrated glass is pressed agresser under the head by a mechanism which is the main portion of my invention and will be described later. The pressed ware then rotates under a manifold 78 having cooling nozzles 80 and supplied with air from an air supply intake 82. l
After the ware'is cooled it rotates to a position under a supporting arm 84 for a take-out shaft 86. Suitable gearing in a housing S8 is provided for rotating the shaft 86 intermittently in synchronism with intermittent rotation of the table 18. Take-out arms 90 extend from the shaft 86 and terminate in take-out mechanisms 94. These mechanisms are for actuating take-out tongs 92 carried thereby, all in a conventional manner forming no part of my present invention. Ejection plungers 96 are carried by each mold 54, however, and I provide a kick-up means for operating these which forms part of my invention and will later be described.
The supporting mechanism -for the plungers 56 is shown particularly in Fig. 4 and comprises a plunger head 98 to which the plunger is secured by a plunger retaining ring 100. A piston rod 102 extends upwardly from the head 98 and has a plunger piston 104 thereon located in a plunger cylinder 106. The piston rod and piston have an extension piston rod 108 projecting upwardly through the top cylinder head 110 for the cylinder 106.
A guide ring 112 is provided for guiding coaction with the mold 54 as shown at the bottom of Fig. 4 and is supported by guide ring actuating rods 114. These rods extend slidably through a bracket 116 provided to prevent rotation of the piston rod 102, the bracket being contined to vertical sliding movement relative to the posts 26 and 28. The rods 114 connect at their upper ends to a guide ring cylinder 120 in which a guide ring piston 122 is vertically slidable. A port 124 is provided through the piston rod 102 to communicate with the cylinder 120 below the piston 122 and connects with the lower end of a passageway 126 extending upwardly through the piston rod 102 and its extension 108. This passageway connects at its upper end with an accumulator 128 adapted to have hydraulic pressure therein to normally tend to lower the guide ring 112 relative to the head 98 as will hereinafter appear.
To support the table 18 at the pressing position when the plungers 56 are lowered into the molds 54, an anvil 130 is vertically reciprocable in a slide-way 132 having a mounting foot 134 secured to the base 10 of the machine. A wedge 136 is provided to elevate the anvil 130 into contact with the table 18 under pneumatic pressure introduced to a piston and cylinder assembly comprising a piston rod 138 extending from the wedge 136 and terminating in an anvil piston 140 within an anvil cylinder 142 (see Figs. 2 and 5A).
A kick-up cylinder 144 is also shown in these figures in'which is a pair of kick-up pistons 145 and 146. A piston rod 148 extends upwardly from the piston 145 and a tubular piston rod 149 surrounds it and extends upwardly from the piston 146. A pair ofarms 150 are pivoted on the rod 149 and are urged to the position shown in Fig. 3 by springs 154, being limited in their swinging motion by stop lugs 153 and a stop pin 160. Adjustable studs 152 extend upwardly from the arms 150 to contact the ejection plungers 96 of the molds 54 at the take-out position. A guide yoke 156 is secured to the piston rod 149 and cooperates with a vertical guide bar 158 extending upwardly from a cylinder head 159 to prevent rotation of the piston rod and consequently the arms 150 carried thereby. In the case of an obstruction, however, the arms can swing out of the way as to the dot-anddash line position shown in Fig. 3, and after the obstruction has passed, they will bebrought back to their initial positions by the springs 154 with the lugs 153 engaging vthe stop pin 160. The springs 154 have their ends connected with pins 151 ofthe arms 150 and pins 157 of the guide yoke 156.
The pistons 145 and 146 are adjustable relative to each other to thus adjust the stroke of the kick-up mechanism depending on the height of the ware being made. This is accomplished by having the upper end of the piston rod 143 threaded and coacting with an internally threaded upper end of the tubular piston rod 149, a lock nut 147 being provided to retain adjustment. To secure adjustment, a lock nut 147 is loosened and the piston rod 148 is then turned clockwise or counterclockwise depending on the adjustment desired. This action raises or lowers the piston 146 relative to the piston 14S, the lowest adjustment and therefore maximum stroke being illustrated in Fig. 3A and the highest adjustment and therefore minimum stroke being illustrated in Fig. 3B. The stroke is limited in the upward direction by the piston 146 striking the cylinder head 159 and in the downward direction by the pistou 145 striking a cylinder head 143 at the lower end of the cylinder 144. Thus the stroke can be adjusted within the range illustrated in Fig. 3A and Fig. 3B while minor adjustments may be made by raising or lowering the studs 152. These studs are provided with lock nuts 141 to retain the adjustment.
Referring to the hydraulic and air circuit diagram of Figs. 5 and 5A, the hydraulic circuit includes an oil tank 162 and a pair of pumps 164 and 166 for pressurizing the oil. The pump 164 is of the constant pressure type and the pump 166 is of the constant delivery type. A pressure regulator valve 163 is associated with the pump 164 and a pressure relief valve 165 is associated with the pump 166. A return pipe 250 through a heat exchanger 252 provided with a by-pass check valve 254 extends from the pressure regulator valve 163 back to the tank 162 and the pressure relief valve 165 has a return pipe 161.
The outlet of the pump 166 delivers oil through a pipe 167 to an oil supply pipe 168 connected by a pipe 169 with a 4-way valve 170. The outlet of the pump 164 delivers oil through a pipe 175 also to the pipe 169. Outlet pipes 172 and 174 extend from the valve 170 and connect respectively with a pair of plunger-down pipes 176 and a pair of plunger-up pipes 178. Two reversible hydraulic motors 179 are provided, one in each of the plunger-up lines 178. These motors are diseonnectably connected together by a coupling 131, thus eliminating any tendency for either plunger 56 to stay down. By disconnecting the coupling 181, either plunger may be operated independently of the other. Reducing and check valves 256 and 258 are interposed between the pipe 172 and the two pipes 176. The pipes 176 connect with the top cylinder heads 110 of the cylinders 166 and the pipes 178 connect with bottom cylinder heads 180 thereof. A discharge pipe 182 extends from the valve back to the tank 162.
Flow control valves 184, a return pipe 186, check valves 171, 173, 177, 18S and 190, an accumulator 194 and a shut-ofi valve 196 are also included in the hydraulic circuit. For charging the accumulatore 128, I provide an accumulator' supply pipe V202 connected with the pipe 175. The pipe 202 extends through a check valve 204 to an accumulator supply pipe 206 from which the oil flows through a manually operable 4-way valve 20S and a pressure reducing and check valve 210 to an accumulator supply pipe 212. A pressure gauge 211 is connected to the pipe 212 to indicate the pressure therein as ser by the valve 210, and the pipe 212 terminates in a shut-olf valve 213 with which is connected a iiexible accurnulator` supply hose 214. The hose 214 terminates in a detachable coupling 216 for a nipple 218 of each accumulator 128, and the coupling can be successively connected to each of the nipples for charging the accumulators and the hydraulic systems 126-124-120 connected therewith. A pressure gauge 220 is provided on each accumulator 128 to indicate the pressure in the hydraulic system just referred to. The accumulators are charged x prior to operation of the machine to the pressure desired for the particularware to be pressed in the machine.
The pneumatic system for controlling the anvil 130, the pick-up piston 146 and the 4-way valve 170 is shown mainly in Fig. A and the operation thereof is diagrammed in Fig. 6. The pneumatic system includes valves of the timer 76 which are numbered V6, V7, V9, V10, V11 and V12.
The valves V6 and V7 control the ow of air from an air supply pipe 222 to opposite ends of a spool valve 224 to supply air through a pipe 226 and a quick exhaust valve 228 (see Fig. 5) to a cylinder 230 having a piston 232 therein and a piston rod 234 to actuate the 4-way valve 170 against the action of a return spring 236.
The valves V9 and V10 supply air to opposite ends ot a spool valve 238 (as determined by the timer 76) which in turn supplies air to a plunger-up pipe 24d and exhausts it from a plunger-down pipe 242 or vice versa depending on the position of the spool valve.
The valves V11 and V12 supply air selectively to opposite ends of a spool valve 244 which controls the ow of air to an anvil-up pipe 246 and from an anvildown pipe 248 or vice versa depending on lthe operation of the timer 76 and the consequent operation of the spool valve 244.
Practical operation Fig. 6 diagrams a typical operation for the herein disclosed glass making machine. In a 360 or complete cycle, the table 18 is indexed one station by the Geneva movement and during this cycle, 150 vof a complete revolution is devoted to the index period and 210 to the dwell time. On an average the cycle consumes about one second of time as indicated in the diagram, although this of course is adjustable depending usually on the size of the ware. Likewise the plunger, the kick-up and the anvil operations, and the timer 76 (by adjusting the variable speed drive 74 for the timer) are adjustable.
During a cycle of operation, a mold 54 which during the previous cycle received a gob of glass from the funnel 58 arrives at the pressing station under the head 31B at 150. Slightly before this or just after .4 second, the plunger 56 starts downwardly due to opening of the valve V7 which permits air to enter the spool valve 224 to throw it to the position shown in Fig. 5A. This results in air from the line 222 passing through the line 226 to the cylinder 230 in Fig. 5 to force the piston 232 forwardly to the position shown thus reversing the 4-way valve 179 against the action of the spring 236 and sending oil under pressure through 172, 256, 258 and 176 to the heads 111i above the pistons 104 in the cylinders 106. At this time the pistons 122 are at their upper limits of movement by reason of the oil from the accumulators 12S being communicated through the passageways 126 and the ports 124 to the cylinders 126 below the pistons 122.
When, during the downward travel of the piston rod 1&2, the guide rings 112 coact with the molds 54 as in Fig. 4, the pistons 122 will continue to move downwardly under the action of the hydraulic pressure above the pistons 104 and whatever pressure is in the accumulators 12S is thus imposed on the guide rings 112 to assure their firm seating in the molds S4 while the plungers 56 move further downwardly for the press and dwell operations.
Initial contact of the guide rings 112 with the molds 54 happens according to Fig. 6 just after .6 second whereupon the plunger S6 is pressed into the glass in the mold 54 for about another second indicated plunger press (this being during movement of the piston 122 downwardly in the cylinder 121) to the position shown in Fig. 4.) Then before the plunger again goes up, it remains during the plunger dwell period until just before the .8 second indication whereupon the valve V6 sends .air from 222 to the left hand end of the spool valve 224 thus exhausting the line 226 so that the piston 232 returns in its cylinder 230 under the action of the spring 236, a ,quick exhaust valve 228 entering into this operation to insure a quick return of the 4way valve 170 from the previous position to the new position where it lets the oil out of the line 172 through the return line 182 and introduces oil to the line 174 for flow through 188 and 17S to the bottom cylinder heads 130. The oil in these heads acts on the lower surfaces of the pistons 104 to retract the pistons from the position shown in Fig. 4 to the position shown in Fig. 2 thus completing the1 cycle. The table 18 is then indexed for the next cyc e.
When the molds 54 are indexed to the take-out position under the arm 84, the valve V9 just after the beginning ofthe Geneva dwell time (at about .43 second* Fig. 6) is opened for reversing the spool valve 238 so that air from the line 222 can tlow through 240 and thence to the cylinder 144 under the piston 146 therein for elevating the studs 152 into engagement with the ejection plungers 96 to thus lift the pressed ware so that it can be grasped by the take-out tongs 92. The tongs then rotate the ware through 180 and are opened to release t-he ware and set it on the usual take-out conveyor leading to the annealing lehr. Just before the end of the dwell time, (at about .93 second) the valve V1@ opens for reversing the spool valve 238 to the position shown to propel the piston 146 downwardly so that the studs 152 :are out of the way for the next index of the table.
Since there is considerable pressure during the ware pressing operation, anvil is provided at the pressing station and is elevated as a result of opening of the timer valve V11 just before the plunger reaches the glass (about .42 second). The anvil is lowered again just before the completion of the cycle by opening of the valve V12 (at about .93 second). These two valves V16 and V11 opcrate the spool valve 244 (in the manner already described in connection with the spool valves 224 and 233) for propelling the wedge 136 forwardly and thus raising the anvil 1341 and for propelling the wedge rearwardly and thus lowering the anvil respectively.
As above indicated, one of the press plungers may be adjusted to remain inactive when it is desirable to operate the machine single gob instead of `double gob. This is accomplished by closing ow control valve 184 for that plunger and uncoupling the coupling 181 betweenA the hydraulic motors 179. The Single plunger will then operate in the same manner .as described in connection with both plungers, utilizing the pressure in its respective accumulator 128 for holding the guide ring 112 in contact with the mold 54 during the plunger press and plunger dwell periods. In view of this possible adjustment, some of my claims are not limited to a dual plunger arrangement.
Some changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts of my glass making machine with dual cylinder press plungers without departing from the real spirit and purpose of my invention, and it 'is my intention to cover by my claims any modied forms of structure or use of mechanical equivalents which may reasonably be included within their scope.
