2 Claims. (Cl. 311-410) This invention relates to articles offurniture and more particularly to the construction of tables and the like.
The type of construction of the present invention can be used with any type of table, but it is principally designed to be used for fine tables where the wood employed in constructing the table top and legs is relatively'thin.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a new and improved means for attaching legs of table,.in which elements carried by the legs are fastened to the table top in such a manner as to greatly strengthen the legs to the table top.
A further object of the invention is to provide a new and improved table of the above type which is simple in construction and reliable and efficient in stability.
With the foregoing and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the preferred construction and arrangement of the several parts which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
For a clearer understanding of the invention and the objects thereof, reference is made to the accompanying drawings, wherein a particular form of the invention is indicated. These drawings when used in conjunction with the following description serve to illustrate the invention, its principles and the operation thereof, while the claims indicate the scope thereof.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a plan view looking at the underside of a table constructed in accordance with the preferred embodiment of the present invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of one of the angle plates shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged section taken along the line 3--3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken along the line 4-4 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a plan view of one corner of the table top.
shown in Fig. l, the leg and associated parts being removed therefrom; and
Fig. 6 is a side elevation of one of the pieces of wood used in constructing a leg of the table.
Referring to the drawings, the table comprises a top 11 which is supported by a plurality of legs 12. In Fig. 1 the table top 11 is shown as being substantially square in outline. It is to be understood, however, that the top may be of any other configuration, such as rectangular, oval, round, or the like. Also, any number of legs 12 may be attached to the table top 11. In the present instance the legs 12 are shown disposed adjacent each corner of the square top 11.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 4, the table legs 12 are substantially square in cross section or end view. However, the legs also may be round or have any other shape desired. 1
In order to provide a strong construction, each leg 12 is preferably formed of two elongated sections 14, 15,
of wood, said sections being of corresponding construction and being secured together in face to face relationship in the manner to be hereinafter more fully described.
As shown in Fig. 6, each section of the leg is formed with a channel 16 of considerable area, said channel extending lengthwise of the leg section from the lower end 17 thereof upwardly to a point 18 a suitable distance downwardly from the upper end 19 thereof. The channel 16 of each section 14, 15, is substantially semi-circular in cross section, so that when the two sections are placed together in the manner shown in Figs. 3 and 4, a subst'antially cylindrical bore 20 will be formed lengthwise of bore 22.being connected to the upper end of the bore 20 at the shoulder provided by the point 18. The purpose of the upper bore 22 will be hereinafter more fully described; The construction is such that each leg section has a surface at each side of the channels 16 and 21, said surface including the relatively long and narrow surfaces 23 at each side of the channel 16 and the broader surfaces 24 at each side of the channel 21. The surfaces 23, 24 are continuous fiat surfaces adapted to have suitable adhesive, such as glue 26, Fig. 6, applied thereto, so that when the two leg sections 14, 15 are placed face to face and clamped together, they will be united to provide a unitary structure.
A plate 31 having a pair of legs 32 arranged at right angles to each other, is formed with a hole 33 which is located at the corner of said plate where the two legs 32 meet. leg 32 is formed with a plurality of holes 34. The hole 33 is countersunk inwardly from one face 35 of the plate 31 to provide a depression to receive the head of a bolt 36. The holes 34 are countersunk inwardly from the opposite face 37 of the plate to receive the heads of wood screws 38.
The underside of the table top 11 is formed adjacent each of the four corners thereof with an undercut section to provide a recess 41. As shown in Fig. 5, each recess has a pair of legs 42 arranged at right angles to each other, said recess having aconfiguration corresponding substantially to the configuration of each plate 31, and a depth corresponding substantially to the thickness of said plate so that when the plate 31 is mounted in the recess the exterior exposed surface of the plate will be substantially flush with the surface of the underside of the table top 11, as shown in Fig. 3.
The legs 42 of each recess 41 may be formed with openings 44 which are spaced apart so as to align with the screw openings 34 of the plate 31.
When the parts of the table are being assembled, a plate31 is mounted on the upper end of the leg 12 and the bolt 36 inserted through the hole 33 and bore 22. A nut 47 is then turned up on the lower screw threaded portion of the bolt 36 until said nut engages the shoulder 18. In this manner the angle plate 31 is fixedly and rigidly secured to the upper end of each leg 12. Next, the angle plate 31 with a leg attached thereto is mounted in a recess 41. are registered with each other and a wood screw 38 is inserted in each set of aligned holes 34, 44 and screwed up to tightly fasten the plate 31 to the table top 11, in the manner shown in Fig. 3. In this way the legs will be fastened to the table top in such a manner as to greatly strengthen the legs to the table top. I
While a preferred form of the invention is shown in Outwardly from the corner of the plate, each In this operation the holes 34 and 44 thedrawings and described'in the specification, it is not desired to limitthis application for patent to this'particular form, as it is appreciated that other forms of construction could be made that would use the same principles and come within the scope of'theappended claims.
Having thus described the invention what'isclaimed is:
'1. In a table construction, a top having recesses of angular shape'formed in the underside'thereof, each recess being located adjacent to a corner of the top, legs for the table, each leg being formedof a'pair of elongated sections ofcorrespondingconstruction, said leg sections being secured together in face to'faeerelationshima bore formed in each leg and extending lengthwise thereof, an angle=plate mounted on the upperend of'each leg, abolt carried by the angle plate and extending "downwardly through the bore in the leg for, fixedly securing the angle plate to the leg, said angle plate being mounted ina recess of the table top so that the exposed surface of theangle 'plate is substantially'fiush With the surface of the underside ofthe tabletop, a plurality of screw holes formed in 'the angle plate, and screws'extending through the angle plate holes and threadedly mounted in thetable top for rigidly securing each leg thereto.
2. In a table construction, a top of wood having a plurality of recesses formed in the underside thereof, eachreeess having a-pair of legs at -right angles with respect to each other, said recesses being located ad 'jacentthe corners'of 'the table top, a plurality'of "legs for supporting the table top, each of said legs having a plate fixedly secured to the'upper end thereof, said plate having a pair of legs at right angles with respect to each other and projecting from a corner of the plate, said plate having an outline corresponding substantially to the outline of said tabletop recesses for mounting within a recess, whereby the exposed surface of said plate is substantially then with the"surface of the underside of the table top, and means for securing the legs of each plate to the table top to thereby greatly strengthen the table legs to the tabletop.
