Claims. (Cl. 46-135) This invention relates to a toy, and more particularly to a toy dog.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a toy dog which is highly amusing and entertaining, which can be held in one hand and manipulated by a finger of said hand to cause the eyes and tongue to move, and to simultaneously raise one of its legs.
Another object of this invention is to provide a toy dog which may be held in the palm of the hand and manipulated by one of the fingers to cause the toy dog to move its eyes from an open to a closed position.
Another object of this invention is to provide a small toy of the foregoing character which is inexpensive to manufacture, easy to assemble and which is highly amusing and entertaining.
Other objects will become apparent as this description progresses.

The toy dog body generally designated at 10 is formed preferably of plastic material and is made of two half sections 12 and 14 suitably joined together to form a housing for the operating parts. The toy dog has a head 15 and a curled up tail 16 and is of a size to fit and be held in one hand and be operated by the finger of said hand.
The interior of the body has three separate compartments, namely the lower compartment 18, a larger intermediate compartment 20 and an upper or head compartment 22, a horizontal wall 24 separates the lower and intermediate compartments and a horizontal wall 26 separates the head compartment and intermediate compartment.
Vertically supported in said housing where the two half body sections are joined and extending through suitable openings in the horizontal walls 24 and 26 is a spindle 28 which has rigidly fixed at its lower end a member 30 formed of a pair of opposed fingers 31 and 32. The finger 32 is curved as at 33 along one side thereof. The upper end of the spindle projects into the head compartment and has fixed thereto a head piece 34 the top of which is substantially the shape of a half dome and which has a forwardly projecting tongue 36 which extends through the horizontal slot 38 in the dogs face which slot ice represents the mouth. The half dome head 34 has painted thereon a pair of black circles 40 with corresponding white quarter moon shaped sections below which represents the eyes. To the right of same as viewed in Fig. 8 are dotted lines 42 representing eye lid lashes. The head 15 is provided with a pair of eye openings 17 through which the eyes and lashes are visible as will be subsequently described.
Supported in the lower compartment to the rear of the finger 32 is an actuating member generally indicated at 44 which is best shown in plan in Figs. 9 and 10. It comprises a journal pin 46 which is rotatably supported at its opposite ends respectively in the base 11 and horizontal wall 24. Fixedly secured to said pin is the compound cam plate 48 which has a recessed or cutout portion 50 defining a finger 52 at one end thereof and an inwardly curved finger 54 at the other end of the recess. Said cam plate also has a pair of recessed or cut portions 56 and 5'8 which define a finger 6t and an engaging edge 62. The edge of the cam plate curves as at 63 to define an edge 64. A spring 66 rests on the top of the cam plate and is loosely coiled around the pin 46 with one end 67 of the spring extending upwardly and sometimes resting against an abutment or raised portion 68 on the top of the cam plate and the opposite end 69 of the spring turned downwardly and inwardly and resting against the edge 64. The upwardly turned end 67 of the spring adjacent the abutment 68 is positioned and confined in a small opening 70 in the horizontal wall 24 between the two half body sections 12 and 14. This normally urges and maintains the cam member in the position shown in Fig. 9. Fixedly secured on the underside of the cam plate 48 is a lever '72 which extends outwardly through a slot 73 in the bottom of the toy body and. which has a ring member 74 on the end thereof to be manually engaged by a finger to operate the actuating member.
On the body section14 is pivotally secured as by a pin 76, a movable leg 78. The pin 76 has rigidly secured to its inner end a panel 83 having a pair of fingers 81 and 82 at right angles to each other. The finger 81 is positioned in the recess 56 of the cam plate to be engaged by the fingers 52 and 60 and the finger 82 when rocked downwardly is positioned in the recess 58 to be engaged by the finger 6i) and edge 62. A pair of stop members 83 and 84 are provided to limit the movement of the pawl 80. An opening 86 is provided in the body section 14 adjacent the pawl.
Loosely and pivotally supported on the head 15 adjacent the movable leg 73 by means of a pin 37 is an ear 88 which has its lower end curved as shown. The ear 88.
is moved either forwardly or rearwardly when engaged by the movable leg 78.
In the normal position the parts are urged by the spring 66 to the position shown in Fig. 10. In this position the tooth 54 of the cam plate 48 engages the finger 32 of the movable head to maintain the head in the position shown in Fig. 10. The lever 72 is thus in its fully forward position. In this position the tongue 36 is at the right side of the mouth slot. In this position the black eyes are visible through the eye openings as though the eyes were open. The movable leg '78 is in its down position with the pawl member in the position shown in Figs. 6 and 11 with the finger 81 in the recess 56 between the fingers 52 and 6th.
When the lever 72 is retracted as shown in Fig. 9 against the tension of the spring 66, the finger 52 of the cam plate 48 engages the finger 32 to rock the movable head 34 to the left (Fig. 9), thus moving the eyes 40 out of the eye openings and presenting the eye lid lashes 42, while mov ing the tongue 36 to the left side of the mouth. Simultaneously the finger 60 will engage the finger 81 of the pawl 80 to rock the movable leg 78 upwardly. As the leg I: 78 moves upwardly it will engage the ear 88 to move same. As soon as the lever 72 is manually released the spring 66 will move the cam plate 58 back to the position shown in Fig. 10 where the eye 40, tongue 36 and leg 78 will resume their normal. position previously described, such as shown in Fig. 2. The pawl 39 being thus returned by its engagement with the cam edge 82 to its initial position shown in Fig. 6.
The operating parts as well as the body sections may be made preferably of plastic material It will be understood that various changes and modifications may be made from the foregoing without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a toy dog of the size to be carried and supported in one hand, said toy dog having a body and a head with the head having a pair of eye openings, a leg pivotally secured to said body, a spindle supported in said body supporting a member in said head which has a pair of eyes, said spindle having a finger at the lower end thereof, a cam plate supported in said body and having means extending exteriorly of said body to be engaged and operated by the finger of the hand, said cam plate engaging the finger on the spindle and operatively connected to said leg, said means when operated adapted to move said cam plate to operate said head member and said leg.
2. In a toy dog of the size to be carried and supported in one hand, said toy dog having a body and a head with the head having a pair of eye openings, an ear pivotally secured to said head, a leg pivotally secured to said body, a spindle supported in said body supporting a member in said head which has a pair of eyes, said spindle having an engaging surface at the lower end thereof, a cam plate supported in said body and having means extending exteriorly of said body to be engaged and operated by the finger of the hand, said cam plate engaging the engaging surface of said spindle and operatively connected to said leg, said means when operated adapted to move said cam plate to operate said head member and said leg, and said leg when operated adapted to strike said ear to move same.
3. In a toy animal of the size to be supported in one hand, said toy animal having a body and a head, said head having a pair of eye openings and a mouth opening, a movable head member mounted in said head on a vertical axis for horizontal rotation, said movable head member having a pair of eyes in association with said eye openings and a tongue extending outwardly through said mouth opening, an actuating member mounted within said body and operatively connected to said movable head member, a lever connected to said actuating memher and extending laterally of said body and adapted to be engaged by the finger of the hand, spring means engaging said actuating member for normally manitaining the eyes in registry with said eye openings and the tongue in one position in said mouth, said actuating member when operated by retraction of said lever adapted to shift said eyes laterally out of registry with said eye openings and to shift said tongue laterally from one position to another position in said mouth, said spring means returning said lever and actuating member to normal position when said lever is released.
4. in a toy dog of the size to be carried and supported in one hand, said toy dog having a body and a head with the head having a pair of eye openings and a mouth opening, a leg member pivotally secured to said body, a movable head member mounted in said head on a vertical axis for horizontal rotation, said movable head memher having a pair of eyes and a tongue, an actuating member mounted within said body and operatively connected to said head member and to said leg member, a lever connected to said actuating member and extending laterally of said body to be engaged by the finger of said hand, spring means engaging said actuating member for normally maintaining the eyes and tongue in a certain position with respect to said eye openings and mouth respectively, said actuating member when operated by retraction of said lever adapted to shift said eyes and tongue laterally and simultaneously to cause said leg to pivot with respect to said body, said spring means returning said lever and actuating member to normal position when said lever is released.
5. In a toy dog of the size to be carried and supported in one hand, said toy dog having a body and a head with the head having a pair of eye openings and a mouth opening, a leg pivotally secured to said toy body, a member supported in said head on a vertical axis for horizontal rotation, said movable member having a pair of eyes, an actuating member mounted within said body and having a lever extending laterally of the body to be engaged and operated by the finger of said hand, said actuating member operatively connected to said member and to said leg to operate same, spring means engaging said actuating member for normally maintaining the eyes in registry with said eye openings, said lever when retracted adapted to move said actuating member to simultaneously move said eyes out of registry with said eye openings and to elevate said leg with respect to said body, said spring means returning said lever and actuating member to normal position when said lever is released.
