1 Claim. (Cl. 36-4) This invention relates to a metal legging to be used for protection of the leg of a hunter.
It is an object of this invention to provide a legging for the leg of a person which is formed of a suitable light-weight protective material and so formed that it will completely cover the leg and foot of a person while being made in sections that are easily attached together by the person desiring to use such a legging.
It is another object of this invention to provide a legging of the kind to be more particularly described hereinafter which covers the leg below the knee as well as the foot or shoe of a user.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a metal or plastic leg covering of this kind for covering and protecting the leg below the knee as well as the foot or shoe without hindering the normal walking movement of the user.
It is a still further object of this invention to provide a metal legging of this kind which is relatively easy to make, construct and assemble by a person or persons desiring to construct such a device for sale or distribution to others, as the buying public, at an economical cost for the maximum use and benefit.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter described and the novel features thereof defined in the appended claim.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of one side of a metal legging constructed according to an embodiment of my invention.

Fig. 4 is a rear elevation.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary longitudinal section, partly broken away, of the lower end of the legging taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 is a transverse section taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates generally a protective legging constructed according to an embodiment of my invention.
The legging 10 is adapted to be worn on the leg of a hunter, or other person while hunting, or a person employed by a Government Agency, as a game warden, soil conservation inspector, etc.
A separate legging 10 is provided for each leg of the hunter.
The legging 10 is formed of a light metal or plastic body 11 which will wrap around the leg of the wearer, the body 11 having a longitudinally extending slit 12 on one side thereof whereby the body 11 is divided into a front section 13 and a rear or back section 14 on the respective portions or sides of the leg on which the body 11 is engaged.
The front and back sections of the body 11 are secured together when the body is positioned on the leg of a wearer so that the body is positioned on the leg of a wearer by a strap 15 which is connected at one end 2 to one of the sections of the bdy as the front section engaging through a buckle 16 which is carried by the other, or back section, of the body 11 of the legging. The buckle 16 may be used where the strap is located as in the drawings.
The legging 10 is to be worn by a hunter as the hunter walks about in the field or during hunting operations and the back section 14 is formed with a cutout recess 17 at the upper end thereof so that the thigh of the legging may be moved downwardly, as in walking, without being obstructed by the body 11.
The front section 13 of the body 11 is to cover and protect the front side of the leg of the wearer at and below the knee.
A strip of binding metal or plastic 18 is secured to the upper and lower edges of the body 11 byrivets. 18 to hold the body together and prevent any cracking 'at'the edges. A pad as of leather is bound on the upper and lower end of each legging, not shown in the drawings, may be placed between the binding strip 18 and the body 11 when and as desired.
A shoe vamp 19 is pivotally connected to the lower end of the body 11 to comfortably overlie the top of a shoe or the foot of the wearer of the legging 10.
The vamp 19 is pivotally connected at its opposite sides to the opposite sides of the body 11 by a pivot pin 20 which extends through the walls of the body 11 and the walls of the vamp. The vamp 19 is also made of a thin sheet of metal, the same as the body 11 of the legging 10, but the vamp 19 may also be made of leather somewhat larger than the vamp of a shoe.
The vamp 19 is formed with a longitudinally extending slit 21 extending along the length thereof and opening at one end within the body 11 of the legging.
Longitudinally spaced apart holes 22 are provided on the opposite sides of the slits 21 through which a shoe lace 23 may be extended for tightening the vamp 19 onto the foot of the wearer of the legging 10.
An instep strap 24 is supported on and carried by the vamp 19 for extending below the foot or shoe of a wearer of the leggings 10. The shank strap 24 is formed as a short belt having spaced apart openings adjacent one end thereof through which a pin of the buckle may be extended for securing the shank strap and the legging onto the leg of a hunter or wearer of the legging 10. A tuck loop may be equally as well used through which the strap 24 may be engaged.
In the use and operation of the metal legging 10 the metal legging is initially opened by the opening of the interengaging fastening strap and buckles 15 and 16 along the length of the body of the legging as well as the loosening or opening of the instep shank 24 on the vamp 19.
When the leg and foot of a wearer have been moved longitudinally of the body 11 for disposing the foot of the wearer within the legging 10, with the foot of the wearer below the knee completely covered by the legging 10 and the foot disposed therebelow the shank strap 24 may be fastened below the instep of the foot of the wearer.
The vamp 19 will extend slightly rearwardly of the instep of the wearer and pivoted to the body 11 by the pivot pins 20 with the major portion of the vamp 19 extending forwardly from the body for covering the instep of the wearer as well as the foot above the ball of the foot.
With this structure of the legging 10 there is no structure to limit or detract from the normal walking operation of the hunter While at the same time protecting his legs and feet from brush or other objects which may be encountered duirng the walking hunting operation.
While the specific details of one embodiment of this invention have been herein shown and described, the invention is I101: confined 111611310 7218 changes and alterations may be made Without departing from the spirit and scope thereof as defined in the appended claim.
I claim:
A legging comprising a longitudinally split tubular body adapted to encompass the leg of a person from the ankle to the kneecap, the rear upper portion of said body having a cutout extending downwardly from the upper edge thereof whereby said body will not 'eifect the normal bending of the leg, means detachably securing the split portions of said body together, a vamp member projecting at the rear thereof into the lower end of said body, opposed rivets pivotally securing said vamp to said body, said vamp member having a slit extending forwardly from the rear end thereof, and Said vamp also having spaced holes on opposite sides of said slit to receive lacing for tightening said vamp, and a shank strap carried by said vamp and engageable below the instep of the foot of the user.
