Oneimportant object is to so locate the jewel setting or holder as toimpart to the same a function of aiding in holding the filter in place in the nostrils. 7

Another object of importance is to locate the jewel settings as portions of nostril clips, disposed at opposite sides of the filter, to cooperate with a septum yoke or clip in holding the filter in place. Heretofore, it has been the general practice to support filters in both nostrils by means of a septum-engaging yoke only, and this places a relatively substantial weight upon said yoke, tending to c'ause the same to slip downwardly off the septum.

Still another object is to provide a filter as stated in which, in oiie forrn of the invention, a single length of material can be formed into a plurality of waves or undulations, to embody in the same a center .yoke as well as a pair of side yokes adapted respectively to grip the septum and nostrils, with the opposite end portions of said length of material being adapted to support the jewels exteriorly of the nose while the portions between the center and side yokes are adapted to support filters Within the respeetive nostrils. Yet another object, in a second form of the invention, is to provide a separate filter for each nostril, in which a clip or yoke adapted to engage one side of the nose is exteriorly provided with a jewel or similar ornament, the other end of said yoke beiiig integrally formed as a pair o'f 'i'nteg r al-ly connected, perforated, filtei-engagirig' plates resil ently spi eada-ble for insertion of a replaceable filter Cartridge;

Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing the filter device as it appears when in use.

Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the filter per se.

Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view, still further enlarged, on line 3-3 of Fig. 2, the nose being shown in dotted outline.

Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 showing a modified form in which each nostril has a separate filter device associated therewith.

Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the modified filter device.

Fig. 6 is an exploded perspective view of said device.

In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 13, the nose filter has been generally designated by the reference numeral 10, and comprises a single length of relatively thin, non-corrosive metal material bent to include, medially between its ends, a substantially U-shaped center yoke 12 adapted to engage the septum A of the nose B.

2,777,442 elee her-n Patented At its opposite ends, the center yoke 12 merges irito horizontally extending, coplanar filter support members 14 extending in opposite directions from the center yoke across the nostrils of the nose. At those ends of meinbers 14 remote from yoke 12, the members merge into U-s'haped side yokes 16 adapted to engage the sides C of the nose. The side yokes 16 have their 'exteriorly disposed legs Welded or otherwise atfixed to outwardly facing, dished, jewel-holding elements or settings 18 in which are engaged jewels 20 or other ornamental articles. It will be understood that the jewels can be of any desired shape, or color, and in certain forms of the invention it may be desired to omit the jewels and provide a metal ornamentation upon the outer legs of the side yokes.

Fixedly secured to the filter support members 14 are filter gripping elements 22. These are of fiat, circular outline, and are flanged inwardly along their top and bottom edges to grip the top and bottom surfaces of a filter 24. The filter can be of any desired type, and may or may not be medicated. It is mainly important, of course, that the filter be designed to properly filter out foreign particles from the air inhaled through the nostrils, while still being fully pervious to air so as not to impede the free inhalation of the air therethrough.

The device, as shown in Figs. 1--3, is inserted into the position shown, the legs of the side and center yokes being slightly springable so as to be resiliently spread apart to receive the septum and the sides of the nose, after which the legs of the several yokes spring back together to an extent sufiicient to securely clip the associated parts of the nose while not resulting in discomfort to the wearer; The jewels, being disposed exteriorly of the nose, add a novel ornamentation to the device, and at the same time, it is to be noted that the jewels serve to provide an increased bearing area on the outer sides of the side yokes, against the surface of the nose to aid in securely gripping sr In Figs. 4-6 there is shown a modified form generally designated 1 0 In th-is form, two identical but opposite devices are used, rather than a device formed from a single length of material and supporting two filters; In the modified form, each device supports one filter, and is attached to one side C of the nose. The members 14*, 22 are disposed in parallel planes, and can be resiliently spread apart to an extent sufiicient to engage therebetween a flat, circular, replaceable filter cartridge 24 The cartridge, when engaged between the members 14 22*, extends over the full area of the nostril, to filter the air inhaled through the nostril.

The yoke 16 on its outer leg, is integrally formed with a cruciform jewel-engaging structure including a plurality of arms 18 integral with pointed fingers 26 (Fig. 6). The arms 18 provide a setting for the jewel 20, and to engage the jewel in said setting, the jewel is simply moved in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 6, after which the fingers 26 are bent over the jewel into positions shown in Figs. 4 and 5.

The finger 26 formed upon the arm 18 with which the outer leg of yoke 16 initially merges is struck out of the material of its associated arm, as shown in Figs. 4 and 6.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent 1. A nose filter comprising a nose-engaging yoke; filter support means carried by said yoke at one side thereof; ornament support means carried by the yoke at the other side thereof, and proportioned to increase the area of said filter bearing against the nose at the location of the ornament support means; filter means carried by the filter support means, and an ornament carried by the ornament support means, said filter including, in addition to the first-named yoke, a pair of side yokes at opposite sides of the first-named yoke, the first-named yoke being adapted to receive the septum of the nose and the side yokes being adapted to receive the opposite sides of the nose.

A nose filter comprising a nose-engaging yoke; filter support means carried by said yoke at one side thereof; ornament support means carried by the yoke at the other side thereof, and proportioned to increase the area of said filter bearing against the nose at the location of the ornament support means; filter means carried by the filter support means; and an ornament carried by the ornament support means, said filter including, in addition to the firstnamed yoke, a pair of side yokes at opposite sides of the first-named yoke, the first-named yoke being adapted to receive the septum of the nose and the side yokes being adapted to receive the opposite sides of the nose, said filter support means extending in opposite directions from the first-named yoke to merge into the respective side yokes.

A nose filter comprising a nose-engaging yoke; filter support means carried by said yoke at one side thereof; ornament support means carried by the yoke at the other side thereof, and proportioned to increase the area of said filter bearing against the nose at the location of the ornament support means; filter means carried by the filter support means; and an ornament carried by the ornament support means, said filter including, in addition to the first-named yoke, a pair of side yokes at opposite sides of the first-named yoke, the first-named yoke being adapted to receive the septum of the nose and the side yokes being adapted to receive the opposite sides of the nose, said filter support means extending in opposite directions from the first-named yoke to merge into the respective side yokes, all of the yokes being of U-shaped formation with leg portions resiliently biased toward one another.

4, A nose filter comprising a nose-engaging yoke;

filter support means carried by said yoke at one side thereof; ornament support means carried by the yoke at the other side thereof, and proportioned to increase the area of said filter bearing against the nose at the location of the ornament support means; filter means carried by the filter support means; and an ornament carried by the ornament support means, said filter including, in addition to the first-named yoke, a pair of side yokes at opposite sides of the first-named yoke, the first-named yoke being adapted to receive the septum of the nose and the side yokes being adapted to receive the opposite sides of the nose, said filter support means extending in opposite directions from the first-named yoke to merge into the respective side ,yokes, all of the yokes being of U-shaped formation with leg portions resiliently biased toward one another, the filter support means including a relatively fiat, circular filter holder adapted to extend about said filter means, said holder being flanged inwardly at its top and bottom edges to grip the top and bottom surfaces, respectively, of the filter means.

A nose filter comprising a nose-engaging yoke; filter support means carried by said yoke at one side thereof; ornament support means carried by the yoke at the other side thereof, and proportioned to increase the area of said filter bearing against the nose at the location of the ornament support means; filter means carried by the filter support means; and an ornament carried by the ornament support means, said filter including, in addition to the firstnamed yoke, a pair of side yokes at opposite sides of the first'named yoke, the first-named yoke being adapted to receive the septum of the nose and the side yokes being adapted to receive the opposite sides of the nose, said filter support means extending in opposite directions from the first-named yoke to merge into the respective side yokes, all of the yokes being of U-shaped formation with leg portions resiliently biased toward one another, the filter support means including a relatively flat, circular filter holder adapted to extend about said filter means, said holder being flanged inwardly at its top and bottom edges to grip the top and bottom surfaces, respectively, of the filter means, the inwardly extended flanges of the holder extending through the full periphery thereof to define relatively large center openings at the top and bottom of the holder.
