Description

N. PETERS. FHOTOMTHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON, D Cv UNrrED STATES PATENT CHAS. DIEDRIOH AND IVM. T. SLOCUM, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENXSYLTANIi-k, ASSIGNORS TO JAS. S. MASON & CO., OF SAME PLACE.
EMPROVED MACHINE FOR MAKING METAL, CAPS FOI-l Specification forming part 0f Letters Patent- No. ',756, dated Ajril C3, 1860.
To @ZZ 107mm/ it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES DIEDRIoH and WILLIAM T. SLooUM, both of the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machinery for Making Metal Lids and Bottoms for Boxes, &c. and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Our invention .relates to improvements in machinery in which a punch and die are used for cutting disks from plates of metal and turning the edges of the disks so as to form the bottoms or lids for boxes, dsc.; and our improvement consists, first, in a chute or conductorhaving a bent tongue, inclined side, and a vertical chamber with an opening, the whole being constructed and arranged in respect to the die of the cutting-punch and the die for turning the edge of the disk, in the manner described hereinafter, vso that the disks after leaving the cutting-die may assume a proper position for the action of the formingdie; secondly, in a device for forcing the lids or bottoms from the opening in which they have been formed.
In order to enable others to make and use our invention, wewill now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
On reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figures l and 2 are side views, partly in section, of a machine for punching and forming the edges of metal disks with our improvements. Fig. 3 is an end view, and Fig. 4 a sectional plan.
,Similarletters refer to similar paris throughout the several views.
rIhe frame-work of the machine. consists of a base-plate, A, the four legs BB, the plate C, and brackets D and E, all firmly secured together.
F is a vertical shaft turning above in the projection a of the brackets E, and below in the projection b of the block c, which is secured to the base-plate A. To the upper end of this vertical shaft is secured abevel-wheel, G, gearinginto a similarwheel, H, on the driving-shaft I, which turns in projections on the bracket E, and which is furnished at one end with a pulley, J, for receiving astrap, and at the opposite end with a crank, K. This crank is connected by a rod, L, and suitablejoints to the lever M, which is secured to the upper end of the screw N, the threads of the latter being adapted to threads cut in the overhanging portion of the bracket D. The lower end of the screw is so connected to the upper end of the square plunger P that the former can turn independently of the latter, but so that one cannot move vertically independently of the other. The plunger lits in and is guided byia projection, d, of the bracket D, and is furnished with a circular punch, c, adapted to the circular orifice of the die j", which rests on the plate c within the annular flange h` on the said plate, the flange being provided with set-screws for adjusting the die so that its orifice may coincide with the punch e.
Q is a rod sliding in the blocks c and t' (secured to the base-plate A) and operated by an eccentric, B, on the vertical shaft F, the said eccentric fitting into a recess formed in one end of the rod, the opposite end of which is provided with a circular die fitting snugly but moving freely in the lowestend of the chute S, which will be more especially referred to hereinafter. A rod, t, passes through a central opening` in the rod Q and its die q, the rod tbeing cranked or bent at t, and the bent portion passing through a slot, a, in the rod Q, from which point it takes a direct course toward the shaft F, where the rod is forked, the forked end being arranged to embracethc shaft, as best observed on reference to 4. An eccentric or eamn, bears against a pin projecting from the rod t, and tends, as the shaft revolves, to move the rod forward and cause its outer end to project beyond the end of the die q, a spring, w, tending to draw Jthe rod back when the position of the eccentric will permit it, so that the end of the rod may be withdrawn into the orifice of the die q. The upper end of the chute or conductor S is secured to the underside of the plate c directly under the die f, the enlarged portion of the opening of which coincides with the mouth ol' the chute, which is provided with a bent tongue, e. The front of the chute is straight and vertical, and the rear inclined to within a limited distance from the lower end, which of this temporary retention of the rodt. rlhe consists of a vertical chamber large enough to admit the disk of `metal of the same diameter as the punch c, the chamber serving to maintain the disk in its proper vertical position concentric with the die q and with the opening x in front of the vertical chamber of the chute, into which opening the die q penetrates a short distance during the'movement of the machine. This opening communicates with a larger opening in the cross-bar 1 ,which is'V secured to the frcnt legs B of the machine.
On turning the driving-shaft I the following movements will be imparted to different parts of the machine: First, a vibrating motion of the lever M and its screw N, and consequently a vertical reciprocating motion to the plunger l? and its punch e,- secondly, a horizontal reciprocating motion to the rod Q through the eccentric R on the shaft F 5' thirdly, a reciprocating motion tothe rod t through the eccentric o on the same shaft F.
Supposing the moving parts of the machine to be in the position illustrated in Fig. l, the punch e being at its most elevated position, and the rods Q and t receding after reaching the limit of their outward movement. The operator places the plate of tin on the die F, when the punch gradually descends, while the rods Q and t continue to recede. The punch e, penetrating the oriice of the die Ffcut-s from the tin plate a disk of the desired size, and this disk falls first onto the bent tongue z, which tends to tilt it on its edge, and thence, guided by the inclined side of the chute, into the lower vertical chamber, where it occupies the position represented in Fig. 2, both the rods Q and t being so far withdrawn from the chamber as not to interfere with the tendency of the disk to assume its proper vertical position ready to be acted upon by the die q. The punch e now begins to rise and the rod Q to move forward, the rod t being for the present held back by the spring w, the position or form of the eccentric being such as to admit die q continuing to move forward strikes against the face of the tin disk and, forcing the central portion of the latter into the opening xin front of the lower end of the chute S, turns the edges at right angles to the face of the disk, thus forming the desired bottom, cap, or'
lid, which adheres to the opening in which it hasbeen formed until the rod t advances, pushes the lid from the position in which it has been retained into the enlarged opening of thecross-bar y, from whence it-falls into any suitable receptacle.
The operating parts of the machine have now assumed the position represented in Fig. l preparatory to a repetition of the above described movements.
lt will be understood that the die gis slightly less in diameter than the opening x, and that the inner edge of this opening and the edge of the die are slightly blunt, so as to prevent any cutting of the disk during the formation of the lid or cap.
l/Ve claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Fatentl. The chute or conductor S with its bent tongue z, its inclined side, vertical chamber, and opening ar, the whole being constructed, substantially as set forth, and arranged in re` spect to the die f of the punch c and the die g of the rod Q, as specied.
2. The rod Q and its die q with the central opening for the rod t, the Whole being arranged in respect to the vertical chamber, the chute S, and its opening x, and operating as and for the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES DIEDRICH. XVM. T. SLOCUM.
