United States Patent STARTER SWITCH FOR CONTROL SWITCH SYS- TEM FOR AUTOMOBILE LIGHTING AND IGNI- TION SYSTEM Anthony Arnejo, Detroit, Mich.
Application November 20, 1952, Serial No. 321,641
1 Claim. (Cl. 200-16) The present invention relates to a starter switch for control switch system for automobile lighting systems and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts herein described and claimed.
The present invention relates to a starter switch particularly adaptable for use with and forming a part of control switch systems such as are set forth in my copending applications entitled Control System for Automobile Headlights, Serial No. 313,939, filed October 9, 1952, and Switch Construction for Control System for Automobile Headlights and Ignition System, Serial No. 320,419, filed November 14, 1952, now Patent No. 2,714,138, issued July 26, 1955. In both of the applications referred to there is provided on the rear face of the conventional dashboard, a board of dielectric material which forms a part of the invention in both cases. In the instant case the board is extended and a novel starter switch is mounted in the extended portion of the board and extends through the dashboard to a control knob. In the aforesaid application, Serial No. 313,939, there is provided a wiring panel and the instant invention discloses means for utilizing such panel in connection with the wiring necessary for the carrying out of the present improvement.
It is accordingly an object of the invention to provide a novel starter motor switch for motor vehicles.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character set forth having a novel mounting therefor.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character set forth which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and yet effective and etficient in use.
Other and further objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the following specification taken in conjunction with the drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary front elevational view of an embodiment of the invention shown mounted in a dashboard having also mounted therein a control switch for the lighting system of such vehicle,
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken substantially along line 2-2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view similar to Figure 2 but further enlarged to illustrate certain details of a starter motor switch construction forming a part of the invention, and
Figure 4 is a schematic view illustrating certain electrical wiring forming a part of the invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, there is shown therein a switch handle generally designated at 10 and having a normally vertically dependent handle portion 11 which is adapted to coact with a latch plate 12 and certain notches 13 formed therein whereby to maintain the handle 10 in selected positions. The handle 10 is provided with a hollow hub portion 14 in which is centrally mounted a rearwardly extending shaft 15 which extends through and is revolubly mounted in an instrument panel 16 of an automobile. A compres- 2,774,829 Patented Dec. 18, 1956 ice sion spring 17 surrounds the shaft within the hub 14 and bears against the handle 10 at one of its ends and against the outer face of the panel 16 at its other end.
The rearward end of the shaft 15 has aifixed thereto a switch arm 18 having a yieldable contact plate 19 atfixed thereto and adapted to contact certain fixed contacts 20 mounted in a block 21 of dielectric material through which the shaft 15 extends. A flat metal plate 22 is aflixed by welding or the like to the rear face of the panel 16 and is provided with an opening 23 through which the shaft 15 extends and the block 21 is affixed to the member 22 by means of a plurality of screws 24 which extend therethrough and engage in the member 22.
All of the above is previously shown in my co-pending application, Serial No. 313,939 and in the other copending application above-mentioned and forms no part of the present invention except as hereinafter set forth. In addition there has also been shown in the aforementioned co-pending applications a wiring panel 25 upon which is mounted a plate 26 of dielectric material having four binding posts 27, 28, 29 and 30 mounted thereon. As a part of the present invention an additional binding post 31 is mounted upon the wiring panel 25.
Also forming a part of the present invention is a laterally extended portion 32 of the block 21. The extension 32 has formed therein a pair of recesses 33 and 34 which define in the extended portion 32 three partitions 35, 36 and 37.
An opening is provided in the panel 16, as shown at 38 and has mounted therein a bearing 39 through which extends a shaft 40. The shaft 40 extends through suitable openings in the partitions and 36 and is reciprocally mounted therein. The shaft is provided at its outer end with a control knob 41 and has afiixed to its inner end a circular block 42 of dielectric material by means of a pin 43 or the like. The rear face of the block 42 has aflixed thereto by means of screws 44, a plate 45 of electrically conductive material such as brass or the like. A collar 46 of dielectric material is atfixed to the shaft 40 by means of a pin 47 and is provided at its forward side with an outwardly extending flange 48. The collar 46 and flange 48 are mounted within the recess 33.
A washer 49 surrounds the shaft 40 and is adapted to lie against the forward face of the partition 36 and has bearing there-against a compression spring 50 which surrounds the shaft 40 and bears at its other end against the flange 48.
A pair of contact members 51 and 52 extend through the partition 37 and have respectively attached to their rearward ends wires 53 and 54. The wire 53 extends to the binding post 27 which is, in turn, connected by a wire 55 to a battery 56, the battery being provided with a wire 57 which connects the same to ground, as indicated at 58. The wire 54 connects with a starter motor 59 which is, in turn, connected by a wire 60 to the newly supplied binding post 31. The binding post 31 is, in turn, connected by a wire 61 to ground, as indicated at 62.
It will be seen, therefore, that when the knob 41 is pressed inwardly, the plate 45 will make contact with the fixed contact members 51 and 52 thus completing an electrical circuit including the wires 53 and 54, the starter motor 59, the Wire 60, the binding post 31, the binding post 27, the wires 55 and 61 and the battery 56, such circuit completed through the ground connections 58 and 62. When the starter motor has accomplished its task, the pressure upon the knob 41 may be released whereupon the spring 50 will cause the collar 46 and its flange 48 and hence the shaft 40 to which the collar 46 is attached to move again to a forward position thus taking the plate 45 out of abutting contact with the fixed contact members 51 and 52 and thus opening the electrical circuit to the strata above described.
While :bub'one form .of the invention has been shown and described herein,:it will bereadily apparent to those skilleddn-the art that many minor modifications may-be made without departing'fro'm'the spirit of theinvention or the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A device of the character described comprising in combinationwith a casing, a forward partition, a central partition and -a rear partition defining recesses therebetween,.a reciprocal shaft extending through said forward and #centraljpartitions and terminating at its rear endin the recess between thecentral and rear partitions, a circular block afiixed-to the rear end of said reciprocal shaft, a plate of electrically conductive material afiixed to the rear face of said circular block, a pair of fixed contact members extending through the rear partition, and means in the recess between said forward and central partitions -for normally urging said shaft -and-its attached References Cited in'the file of this patent UNITED STATES PATENTS 483,115 Johnson Sept. 20, 1892 1,132,602 Myers Mar. 23, 1915 1,675,465 Roehrich July 3, 1928 1,865,237 Danuff June-28, 1932 2,077,552 Findley Apr. 20, 1937 villi".-
