Description

Nov. 27, 1956 B. Y. JAMES 77 ORNAMENT HOLDER FIOR DECORATIVE PACKAGE BOWS Filed Apfil 12, 1954- INVENTOR. 5/7/ 7 K James United States Patent ORNAMENT HOLDER FOR DECORATIVE PACKAGE BOWS Bill Y. James, Miami, Okla.
Application April 12, 1954, Serial No. 422,347
1 Claim. (Cl. 41-10) This invention relates to the art of decorating gift packages and particularly to improvements in package bows to the extent of providing novel means for holding the various parts of the bow in proper relationship with respect to each other and relative to the package upon which the bow is mounted.
It is the most important object of the instant invention to provide in a package bow, means including the use of an ordinary paper fastener for assembling a number of bow parts and at the same time mounting the assembled bow on the package wrapping, particularly upon the tying tapes therefor.
Another object of the instant invention is the provision in a package bow having artificial foliage and flowers with openings or eyelets receiving the fastener in a manner so as to permit use of the latter in attaching the ornamental spray to the package wrappings.
Another object is to provide a special holder for the flower of the spray adapted to hold the latter in a proper upright position, or at any desired angle with respect to the foliage, and which special holder is itself adapted to be associated with the package wrapping so as to not become easily displaced therefrom.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a gift package showing one form of decorative package bow attached thereto through the use of the holder improvements of the instant invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one piece of foliage of the floral spray shown in Fig. 1 and showing the way in which it is held in place through use of a paper fastener.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a modified form of holder for said foliage.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of another form of holder especially designed for the flowers of the spray; and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a modified form of foliage.
In Fig. 1 of the drawing there is illustrated a gift package provided with decorative wrapping that includes ornamental tying tapes 12, and while the package bow 14 shown in Fig. 1, may be mounted in any suitable manner and in any desired location on the wrapping for package 10, it is conveniently placed at the point of intersection of the tapes 12 and attached thereto by use of a conventional paper fastener 16.
The package bow 12 is in the nature of an ornamental floral spray including artificial foliage 18 and a plurality of artificial flowers 20. A portion of the foliage 18 in the nature of a leaf spread is shown in Fig. 2 and designated by the numeral 18a. Similar foliage in Fig. 3 is designated by the numeral 18b, and in Fig. 5, by the numeral 180. One of the flower arrangements 20 of the spray 14 shown in Fig. 4, is broadly designated by the numeral 20a.
One means for holding the various parts of the spray 14 in a collective body, is shown in Fig. 2 and consists of a loop or eyelet 22 formed from bendable material such as lightweight wire and which may be a part of the stem of the leaf 18a if desired.
In producing the artificial foliage 18a after cutting the same from suitable material and into the desired shape and configuration, it is reinforced by a wire stem glued to the back thereof and extending therebeyond so as to permit formation of the eyelet 22 and twistingof the stern as at 24. The leaf 18a can be made attractive by using a metallic foil or other substance provided with a paper backing and the stem of wire material should also be covered with paper, cloth or other substance properly colored to blend appropriately with the colors chosen for the leaf itself.
In Fig. 3 of the drawing, the stem 26 of leaf 18b is shown wrapped around an upright standard 28 on an eyelet 30 adapted to receive the fastener 16.
In Fig. 5 of the drawing, an opening or eyelet 32 is formed in the leaf 18c itself adjacent the base thereof.
The flowers 20 shown in Fig. 1 may be made in much the same manner as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing and, when fastener 16 is threaded through all of the eyelets of the various parts of the spray 14, they are collected together in simulation of a live plant and the fastener 16 may thereupon be used additionally as the means for attaching the entire spray 14 to the package 10 in any manner, as by use of adhesive tape.
In some applications it may be desirable and advantageous to support the flowers 20 either in an upright condition or at desired angles and, therefore, in Fig. 4 of the drawing, there is shown a modified holder for the floral arrangement 20a. It consists of a base that includes one or more pairs of oppositely-extending plates 34 provided with an upright support in the nature of a pair of L-shaped elements 36 'each rigid to the plates 34. Stem 38 of the artificial flower 20a may thereupon be attached to the supports 36 in any desired manner such as by use of adhesive tape 40.
It is seen that the holder shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing may be disposed in proper relationship to the foliage 18 and the floral arrangement 20a may be held in place by plates 34 extending beneath the tying tapes 12 adjacent the point of overlapping of the tapes 12. Since the supports 36 are of bendable material, the angularity of the floral arrangement 20a with respect to the surface of the package 10, and with respect to the foliage 18, may be varied at will.
It can now be appreciated from the foregoing that availability of individual parts of a floral spray to be used as a decorative bow will permit designers of package wrappings to produce various and sundry types of ornamentations and will facilitate quick and easy production of chosen designs. The holding means of the instant invention not only facilitates the grouping of the various parts of the bow in selected manners, but facilitates interconnection thereof and attachment of the finished ornament to the package, all through use of a single fastener common to the parts of the decorative bow.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
A decoration for packages having tying tapes, said decoration comprising in combination an ornamental floral spray including a stern having artificial foliage and an artificial flower; a support including a pair of elongated flat plates spaced apart with their longitudinal axes in alignment and adapted for disposition between the package and the tapes thereof; and an L-shaped bendable wire element for each plate respectively, each element having a horizontal and a vertical leg, the horizontal legs being secured rigidly to the uppermost faces of corresponding plates on said longitudinal axes thereof, the vertical legs embracing the stern therebetween; and an adhesive tape wrapping coiled spirally around the vertical legs and the 3 stern for attaching the spray to the support, the plates extending radially in opposite directions from a line extending downwardly" beyond the longitudinal vertical axis of the stem, the horizontal legs extending beyond the proximal spaced apart ends of the plates and merging with the vertical legs adjacent said extended axis.
