Fig. 5 is a diagrammatic showing of my ignition means with the switches thereof in their engine starting position.
Fig. 6 is a diagrammatic showing of my invention with the switches in a position for continuing the engine running operation thereof.
It is the principal purpose of this invention to provide an automatic finger tip control for the ignition of an internal combustion engine either on an automobile or other industrial device which uses an internal combustion engine for the power derived therefrom. As this invention is more particularly formed for use on an auto mobile such use is particularly described hereinafter.
An attachment is provided for the engine which attachment includes a finger tip control which is located within easy reach of the fingers of a person driving the automobile or otherwise running the internal combustion engine.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings I have provided a control attachment for mounting on the steering column of an automobile, or other suitable fixed support therefor.
The internal combustion engine is of a conventional 2,769,923 Nov. 6, 1956 Patented 2 type d th t at t n a achmen 10 n ludes a coil 11 and a vacuum motor 12 which may be secured adjacent to the engine, both the coil and vacuum motor being contained within a housing 14. The housing 14 will be mounted on the engine, not shown in the draw.- ings, and the coil and vacuum motor will be secured to the we ls of the housing 14 or a shelf 15 therein.
The coil 11 is secured within the housing by a flat brace strap 16 which mounts thereon a brace rod 17 gagement with the head 19 so that the head 19 and core 18 are continually resiliently urged outwardly of the coil or solenoid.
Solenoid core 18 site from head 19 a member 45 adapted in closed position thereof to engage contacts 46 and 47. Contact is connected by conductor 48 to one side of battery 39 and starter circuit 37 and contact 47 is connected by conductor 49 to one side of the ignition coil 31.
Solenoid 25 includes a core 5%] having a bridging switch member 51 secured thereto which is adapted in the closed position thereof to engage contacts 52 and 53.
Distributor 32 includes a normally open switch 54 formed of contacts 55 and 56 connected by conductor 58 to one side of has secured to the end thereof oppobridging switch Coil 11 is connected at one side thereof by conductor 62 to starter circuit 36, and is connected at the other side thereof by condu tor 63 to the battery 39.
fingers of a hand of the operator of the device.
The switch bar 26 on one end of the rod 27 is driven by the bell crank 29 of the motor 12 which is connected to the shaft 28 thereof and will move the switch bar 26 into and out of engagement with the respective circuits to be hereinafter more particularly described.
A coil spring 30 is connected to the bell crank 29 for moving the vacuum motor 12 and its related connectbe clearly understood upon a full understanding of this invention.
A starter circuit 36 is connected to the starter switch 40, of the switch bar 26, and the starter motor 24 so that when the starter controlling switch 40 is closed by the actuation of the finger switch 22 the internal combustion engine will be able to be started. This relationship between the switches on the switch bar 26 to each other is clearly shown in Fig. of the drawings. At this time the starter controlling switch 40 is closed with the ignition coil switches 34 and ground switch 35 opened while the starter controlling switch 40 is closed.
In initially starting operation of the engine, switch 22 is closed, thereby closing circuit 36 to solenoid 25. At this, time switch 40 is closed by spring 3 pulling bar 26 to the right as viewed in Figs. 5 and 6. With switch 40 closed and movable contact 40 engaging stationary contact 40 and with switch 22 closed, coil 11 will be energized and core 18 will move bridging member 45 into engagement with contacts 46 and 47. With coil 25 energized, bridging member 51 will be in engagement with contacts 52 and 53 so'that starter motor 24 will be actuated.
When the engine starts vacuum motor 12 will rock shaft 28 counterclockwise and bar 26 will be moved to the left as viewed in Figs. 5 and 6. At this time switch 40 will be opened thereby deenergizing coils 25 and 11. When bar 26 moves to the left thereby breaking the starting circuit, switch 34 will be closed with movable contact 34 engaging stationary contact 34 and will remain closed so long as the engine is running.
After the engine has cuit 37 will be in operation with the starter controlling switch 40 open as shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings.
With the ignition system of the vehicle or operating means for the internal combustion engine in operation the running condition of the attachment is clearly described and shown for Fig. 6 of the drawings.
For killing or stopping the operation of the internal combustion engine switch 22 is closed energizing coil 11 and causing core 18 to move inwardly and also causing bridging member 45 to engage this time head 19 engages contact 59 and grounding circuit from switch 35 through conductors 60 and 61 will be'closed with movable contact 35 engaging stationary contact 35 Ignition coil 31 will be grounded at this time thereby stopping the engine. With the engine operating, switch 40 will be open so that starter switch 25 will remain open.
All of the ignition starting, running and stopping circuits are energized by a conventional type of battery 39 the timing of the ignition being controlled by the distributor 32 after the internal combustion engine has been started and continued to be run.
The vacuum line 41, connected to the vacuum motor 12 effects the movement of the switch bar 26 after the engine has been started and continued in its running operation.
The coil 11 and vacuum motor 12 are merely attachments for the internal combustion engine with the wire been started the ignition coil circontacts 46 and 47. At i attachment being accomplished between the coil 11 and housing 14 both interiorly and outwardly thereof.
The vacuum motor 12 is of the same type of vacuum motor used for the Windshields of an automobile but it is to be understood that any other type of vacuum motor may just as well be used for accomplishing the same result as that had by this invention.
While the specific details of one embodiment of this invention have been herein shown and described, the invention is not confined thereto as changes and alterations may be made without departing from the spirit and scope thereof as defined in the appended claim.
I claim:
In an internal combustion engine, an ignition circuit embodying a battery, a coil, a distributor, and a ground, a normally open vacuum closed ignition switch in said circuit, a starter circuit including said battery, a starter motor in said starter circuit, a normally open manual switch, an electromagnetic switch interposed in said ignition circuit, shunting said normally open vacuum closed ignition switch, and connected between said starter circuit and said battery, an operating coil for said electromagnetic switch connected through said manual switch to said battery, a movable contact bar, a vacuum operator for moving said bar in one direction when the engine starts, a spring for moving said bar in the opposite direction when the engine stops, a contact carried by said bar connected to a second electro-magnetic switch interposed in said starter circuit and including a second operating coil, a stationary contact confronting and normally engaging said first named contact for normally closing a circuit from said battery to said second operating coil through said normally open manual switch, a second contact carried by said bar and conencted to said battery, a second fixed contact connected to one side of said ignition circuit and confronting said second bar contact and normally disengaged therefrom, said second fixed contact being connected to said ignition circuit and forming with said second bar contact said normally open vacuum closed ignition switch, a third contact carried by said bar, a third fixed contact confronting said third bar contact and connected to the ground, and a normally open grounding switch operatively associated with said first electro-magnetic switch and connected to said third bar contact and to said ignition circuit, whereby energization of said first electro-magnetic switch will also close said grounding switch.
