CABLE-STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,841, dated May 1, 1883.
Application tiled August 12, 1882 To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that OWEN LYNCH, deceased, late of Bangor, in the county of Penobscot and State of Maine, did invent a new and useful Improvement in Devices for Handling Anchors on Vessels for Navigation, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming part ot' this specication.
This invention consists of the novelconstruction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a. front elevation ofthe invention, showing the door in position for holding the chain, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation, in section, Online x w of Fig. l, showing the door in position for allowing the chain to pay out.
A represents a frame havingan opening, B, at the center, which is closed by a door, (l, secured upon a shaft, D, at one end ot' the frame. The door is formed 'with a piece, E, whichis secured to the shaft D, and is provided with a recess, F, in its under surface, in which is hinged the piece G, having its free end provided with the slot H. This slot is made narrow at its inner end, with parallel sides, and broad ly-ilaring at its outer end, with its edges bev eled on the upper side.

ed with suitable bearings at one end ot' the frame A, and is connected to a lever, J, by which power may be applied to operate the door. The frame is to be bolted to the bow ot' a vessel, and is further strengthened by the stay-rods K, which are to extend to the deck.
What is claimed isl. The combination, with a suitable frame, of a door made in sections, having a kneejoint connection with each other, and which is provided with a slot for holding a chain passing through an opening in said frame, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with a suitable frame, of the door consisting ot' the piece E, secured to the sha-ft D, and the piece G, hinged in a recess in the under side Ot' the piece E, and having the slot H formed in its free eind, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination, with a suitable frame having guides I, of the door formed ot' two pieces hinged together, one of which is se cured to a shaft having a lever for operating the same, and the other is provided with a slot for an anchor-chain, and is adapted to move between the said guides, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
