UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.4
VILLIAM T. GREEN, OF COVINGTON., KENTUCKY.
PLUG-TOBACCO PRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 276,680, dated May 1, 1883.
i Application led March 11, 1882. (No model.) 4
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I WILLIAM T. GREEN, acitizen of the United States, residing at Govington, in the county of Kenton and the State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Tobacco-Press, of which the followingis a speci! cation.
My invention relates to a tobacco-press that will press tobacco by` lever-pressure to exact size and weight, ready for the finishing-press without loss by chippingaway or adding to this pressed plug before finished.
The mechanism of my improved tobacco- .press is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whichj Figure 1 is a plan on line 3 and 4 of Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a front elevation. Fig. 3 is a section of press C on line 1 and 2 of Fig. l, turned on its side; Fig. 4, a section of press B on line l and 2 of Fig. l; Fig. 5, a section of press C on line 5 and 6 `of Figs. l and 2; Fig. 6, a section of press B on line 7 and 8 of Figs. 1 and 2; Fig. 7, a plan of clamp X, to hold smoking-tobacco funnel in press C; Fig. 8, an'end View of said clamp X; Fig.9, a View of thc clamp fixed, with the plunger-block G and mold F taken out of press C, on line 5 and of Figs. 1 and 2.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A is the table, on which the tobacco is weighed and molds are filled; a, screws passing through the cramp P and into the top follower D, for adjusting said follower, so as to have the plug to any thickness required; B, presserpress producing an upward pressure by means of a double lever, J J, extending both sides of the press, so that two persons could press upon them; b, screws passing through top follower D to fasten the presser-block G; b", screws passing through top follower D ot' press (l to fasten plunger-block G. Any size of presserblocks or plunger-blocks can be fixed to the followers D and D of press B and press G,and adjusted to suit the thickness ot' the plug needed bythe adjustable follower D. C is the plunger-press, producing a. downward pressure by means of the lever L; D, top follower of press B, working between and guided by the posts f,- D', top follower of plunger-press C,
guided by posts f; d, iron rods that fasten the top follower D to the ledge H. These rods work loose in bottom T. E is the bottom follower of press B, upon which the molds F stand'and the tobacco pressed; e, bottom post or legs of the press; F, molds made of any size; f, top frame-work or posts of the two presses B and C; Gr, presser-block made to fit the molds. convexed on the bottom. This convexity is for the purpose of pressing more tobacco to the edges, so that when it is put in the finishing-press the plug produced will have sharper and fuller edges as a finished plug. G' is the plunger-block, made lo lit the molds, having straight bottom, and used in press C to press the tobacco out of the molds into the box S; g, joint where the two levers J J meet, and are fixed to piston K in press B, the holes in bot-h levers being oblong; E, a stiff ledge, to which the follower D4 is attached by means of the boltsl or rods d, and by means ot the adjustable connection M it is attached to the lever L in press C; h, fulcrum of levers J Jin press B; K, piston connecting the levers J J and the bottom follower E L, lever of press C; M, connecting-rod, between lever L and ledge H; 'm m, two prongs of the clamp X, used to hold the funnel u when smoking-tobacco is put up in the press C. These prongs are adjustable by the screw p, and the joint g is tightened by the screw w. N are two circular pieces of ilat iron turned edgewise, made so as to give 4the levers J J a fulcrum in holes punched in them at h; P, iron cramp, fastened to posts f of the press B, through which the screws a are made to work, so as to adjust the follower D; p, screws to adjust the prongs m m ot' the clamp X; q, joint of the prongs m m, like the joints of a pair of shears; R, lever connected to levers J J by means of the rope r for the purpose of relieving any tendency of the follower E to stick, caused by tobaccojuice. i is a rope connecting levers J J and R; S, box, into which the pressed tobacco falls when the molds are discharged by the plunger-block Gr' 5 T, bottom ot' the box S,
`into which the posts f aremortised; u, funnel through which smoking-tobacco is filled and pressed in th'e sack Y in press C; V, piu that passes through the clamp X and posts f, to
Vfasten and be afulcrum for said clamp; W,
weight used to lift and bring back the plungerpress C after having pressed the tobacco out of the molds into box S; w, pin that fastens the prongs mm ofthe clampXat their joints; X, clamp used for holding the funnel u in putting up smoking-tobacco in press C. This clamp is tiXed t0 posts f by pin V, and is taken away when smoking-tobacco is not put up. Y isthesackforsinoking-tobacco,xed around the funnel u to be filled and pressed; Z, smokingtobacco plunger, fixed in follower D of press G, which is ofcourse detachable, and fastened by a pin or in any other way.
This machine is built of hard wood and iron, as shown.
The operation ot' this press is as follows: The table A holds on it lthe tobacco and a pair of scales with which the tobacco to be pressed is weighed, and then carefully spread in the mold F, as even as possible. The mold is then pushed on the follower E of the press'B, with the presser-block G in position. The levers J J are then pressed, producing an upward pressure or carrying the molds up and against the pressure-block G, and the tobaccois'pressed to the desired thickness.. When pressed the mold is pushed onto the press C, with its plunger-block Gin position, and the tobacco' is pressed out ot' the molds by the downward pressure of the plunger-block G', caused by pressing the lever L,and thetobacco falls into the box S, aud is then ready' for the wrapper and nishing-press without adding to or chipping away any tobacco. It should be here stated that the presser-block G and the plungerblock G fit loose in the molds. Hence there is no difficulty about the withdrawing of the molds from each press.
The clamp X is only used for smoking-tobacco (in the press C when the plunger-block G and mold F is not attached) with the plunger Z in the adjustable follower D. Vith the ing an adjustable follower, D, adjusted byI screws a a, passing through cramp P, acting as a fulcruin, and having an adjustable and detachable presser-block, G, adjusted by screws 7) b', passingv through said follower D, acting as a fulcrum, 'against which presser-block- G in the machine an upward pressure by lever-power presses the tobacco to the required thickness, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of a tobacco-press and an adjustable follower, D', adjusted below by screw M, the said follower D' having screws b b', passing' through it to adjust the detachable plunger-block G', said plunger-block having a perpenc'licular thrust to force the tobacco out of the molds, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a tobacco press, the presser-blocks made convex on their faces to press the tobacco more in the center, thereby pressing more tobacco to the edges, so that the finishing-press will give a sharper and better edge to the plug, substantially as shown and described.
