SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,578, dated May 1, 1883. Application filed September 30, 1882. (No model.)
To all 'whom it may concern:

represented in thcaccompanying drawings, of which Figures 1 and 2 are vertical sections, taken on planes at right angles to each other, of an apparatus embodying my invention, the `nature `of which is duly set forth in the claims hereinafter presented.
In the said drawings, A denotes a retort or tubular vaporizing or heating coil, which at its upper end opens into an inverted three-way tubular coupling, B. Y From one arm of this coupling` a jet-pipe, O, provided with an air hood or pipe, D, having lateralpertorationsa in it, descends directly over a disk or deector, E, placed ou a horizontal pipe, F, which, arranged as shown, communicates with the other arm ot' the coupling B by means of a vertical pipe, G. The pipe F opens at its inner end into a residuum-reoeiver, H, which is a vessel open at one side, or at its bottom, and having to the opening a closing screw-plug, b.
Within the pipe F is a clearer, I, which is a cylindrical rod Whose diameter corresponds to that of the bore of the pipe. This rod carries at its inner end ablade or scraper, @,whose width equals the diameter ot' the bore ot the pipe.
At lthe outer end ot' the pipe F there is a stuffing-box, m, for the clearer I to `slide and turn in, such box being to prevent the escape of gas or vapor from the tube.
ln advance of the delector E there is a jethole, d, made in the upper part of the pipe F, while below the pipe, and under such jet-hole, is a cup, K, `between which and the pipe is a.
l jet-pipe, L, which stands at right angles with zontal pipe,v0, which opens into the retort or coil A, at its lower end, as shown in Fig. l. The pipe O is over and parallel to thejetpipe L, both pipes at their outer ends being pro'- vided with long` conical valve-seats, as shown atfaud g in Fig. 1', to receive similar-shaped valves, li and i, whose` stems 7c and Z extend through stuing-boxes on andai, and are provided with screws o, and hand-wheels p, arranged as represented,`suoh screws screwing into the heads q otl the stuffing-boxes, whose packings are to be of asbestus, or .some other proper material capable of withstanding an intense heat. The pipes O and L, by three three-way couplings, r, and two short pipes, s, are made to communicate with a horizontal pipe, P, provided with a stop-cock, IQ, and leading from a reservoir of petroleum.
The apparatus above described is supposed to be mainly within a stove or chamber, one side or part of which is shown at S, .all the portioiis to the right of the said part S being without the said stove or chamber.
In order to put the apparatus in operation, an attendant irst opens the lower valve, i, or moves it off its seat, the upper valve being closed. This will allow petroleum from the reservoir to How into and through and out of the pipe L and drop into the cup K. The liquid petroleum in the cup is next to be entlamed, the flame passing upward against and above the pipes L and F, and through the chimney M, up against the detlector N, the pipe O, and into the coil or retort A, against which it will be deected by the disk N. In doing this the ame will heat the coil. After such coil andthe pipe O may have been sufticiently hea-ted the valve h is to be opened to allow the petroleum to ow into the coil, by which it will be immediately vaporized and converted into gas, which will pass by the pipe Gr into the pipe F,and thence out ofthe jet-hole el, andwill be entlamed, the tlauie rushing upward through, the chimney, and, mingling with air drawn into and through it, will impinge against the deflector N and be detlected upon the coil A. This having taken place, the valvet' is to be closed. By sliding and revolving the clearer 1 and its blade c within the pipe F any tar or residuum forming roo or settling within the said pipe may be forced therefrom into the residunm-chamber H, as occasion may require. 'By means of the jetpipe C and its perforated hood D and the detlector E further heatingof the pipe F and the gases, when therein, may be eti'ected.
By such an apparatus avery great heat may be produced Within the stove or casing S and utilized as occasion may require.
I am aware that a clearer has been used in a boiler-tube for clearing it of deposits and forcing them ont of such tube, and therefore I make no claim to such, as I use a clearer with a tube provided with a lateral opening, and such clearer is to keep such opening from being clogged by deposits made in the bore ot the tube and in and around the opening.
What I claim as my invention is as follows, viz:
l. The combination of the pipes 0, L, and l), arranged, connected, and provided with valves, substantially as described, with the retort or coil A, and the cup K, chimney M, and deector N, all being arranged and to operate substantially as set forth.
2., The combination of the jet-pipe F, its clearer I, residuum-chamber H, and the conduit G, with the chimney M, detlector N, conduit C, coil A, and the pipes O, L, and P, ar-
ranged, connected, and provided with valves, substantially as set forth. Y
3. The combination of the jet-pipe C, its hood D, and the detlector E, with the pipe F, clearer I, residuumchamber H, and conduit G, and with the chimney M, deiiector N, coil A, and the pipes O, L, and P, arranged, connected, and provided with valves, substantially as set forth.
4. The clearer I, and its blade c, in combination with the jet-tnbe Fand residuum-chamber H, arranged and combined with the retort DANIEL M. GRAHAM.
