MIW W HMLL ROTARY FLUID OFERATED HAND TOOL Filed Jan. 2l, 1953 INVENTOR N QC QN NN mm mw United States Patent O ROTARY FLUID OPERATED HAND TooL Gordon W. Hill, Bettendorf, Iowa, assignor, by mesne assignments, to Bettendorf Bakery Equipment Company, Bettendorf, Iowa, a corporation of Iowa Application January 21, 1953, Serial No. 332,140
2 Claims. (Cl. 253-3) This invention relates to a rotary iluid operated hand tool in which the handgrip serves as a housing for the tool spindle and driving motor.
The tool of the present invention comprises an elongated hollow handgrip in which the tool spindle is journaled and which also houses a motor for driving the spindle that is operated by air under pressure. The cornbined handgrip and housing is air cooled, being provided with an elongated annular cooling chamber that surrounds the spindle and that receives air from the rotor chamber. The air passes through the fluid motor and through the annular cooling chamber and through axially directed passages at the end of the housing through which the spindle projects for directing a stream of air over a grinding wheel or other tool attached to the spindle.
The lluid motor is reversible and controlled by a manually operated valve attached to the end of the housing in which the motor is mounted, the valve casing being provided with a suitable fitting for attachment to an air pressure line.
Objects of the invention are to provide a fluid operated tool of simple and inexpensive construction, to utilize the air delivered from the motor, to cool the handgrip, to blow particles loosened by a rotary tool such as a grinder away from the operator, and to provide means which may be quickly and easily operated to reverse the direction of rotation of the motor.
Reference should be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this speciiication in which:
Figure l shows a hand tool embodying the present invention partly in side elevation and partly in longitudinal section;
Fig. 2 shows a fragmentary longitudinal section taken on the line indicated at 2-2- in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the control valve partially broken away to show a portion thereof in longitudinal section;
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary longitudinal section taken on the line indicated at 4-4 in Fig. 2;
Fig, 5 is a transverse section taken on the line indicated at 5-5' in Fig. l; and
Fig. 6 is a transverse section taken on the line indicated at 6 6 in Fig. l.
The tool of the present invention has a combined handgrip and housing provided with a tubular body portion 1 that has a counterbore 2 at one end that provides a rotor chamber and a second counterbore 3 at the bottom of the counterbore 2. A bore 4 extends axially from the counterbore 3 to an elongated cavity 5 of greater internal diameter than the bore 4. At `its opposite end the body member 1 has an axial bore 6 that opens at its inner end to the cavity 5 and that is alined with the bore 4 and a counterbore '7 is provided at the outer end of the bore 6. A tool spindle 8 extends axially through the housing and has a turbine rotor 9 attached to one end thereof that has a running llit within the counterbore 2. The spindle 8 is journaled in ball bearings 10 and 11 that are mounted in the counterbores 3 and 7. A sleeve 12 of an internal ICC diameter somewhat greater than the `diameter of the spindle 8 extends through the chamber 5 and tits at its ends in the bores 4 and 6, the sleeve 12 serving to seal the spindle and its bearings from the cavity 5 and forming the inner wall of an annular cooling chamber surrounding the sleeve 12.
The bearing 11 is held in place by a cover member 13 attached to the end of the tubular body 1 by means of bolts 14, the cover member 13 having an axial tubular extension 15 that provides a housing extension of reduced diameter for engagement with a tool rest. The spindle 8 projects beyond the extension 1S and carries a collet 16 that clamps an arbor 1'7 that carries a suitable tool such as a grinding wheel 18.
The outer face of the rotor 9 is provided with radially elongated recesses 19 that extend inwardly from its periphery and that are regularly spaced throughout the circumference of the rotor. The rotor chamber has an outer wall in the form of a detachable closure member 20 that is provided with two inclined tangential inlet passages 21 and 22 each adapted to direct a stream of air against the recessed portion of the rotor face, the two passages being of opposite hand, one delivering the air stream` in a direction to turn the rotor clockwise and the other to turn the rotor counter-clockwise. A peripheral recess 23 is provided in the peripheral wall of the rotor chamber and this recess connects with a plurality of axial passages 24 that deliver air from the rotor chamber to the cooling chamber 5. A series of closely spaced axial passages 25 at one side of the spindle 8 direct air from the cooling chamber 5 toward the grinding wheel 18 to blow any particles loosened by the grinding wheel away from the operator.
A valve casing 26 is secured to the outer face of the closure member 2li, the casing 26 being provided with a peripheral ilange 27 which receives bolts 28 connecting the valve casing and closure member to the housing body 1. To insure proper registry of the valve casing 26 with respect to the closure member 20, the closure member 20 is provided with a centering lug 29 on its outer face that tits in a socket 30 in the inner face of the valve casing 26. The valve casing 26 is provided with a transverse bore 31 that receives an externally cylindrical internally conical sleeve 32 that is held in iixed position by means of a set screw 33. The valve casing carries a fitting 34 at its outer end for attachment to an air pressure line and the tting 34 is connected through an axially extending passage 35 to the interior of the sleeve 32. Passages 36 and 37 extend radially through the sleeve 32 into the casing 26 on oppo-site sides of the sleeve, the passages 36 and 37 being disposed at right angles to the passage 35. The valve casing 26 has axially extending passages 38 and 39 that extend from the passages 36 and 37 to the tangential inlet passages 21 and 22.
A conical valve 40 is rotatably mounted in the sleeve 32 and is held against endwise movement with respect to the sleeve 32 by a handle member 41 engaging one end of the sleeve 32 and by a nut 42 that holds a washer 43 against the opposite end of the sleeve. The valve 40 has an axially elongated chamber 44 that may be connected to the pressure inlet passage 35 by either of two radially and oppositely extending passages 45 extending from the chamber 44 to the periphery of the valve 40. A third radial passage 46 extends from the chamber 44 and is adapted to register with either of the radial passages 36 or 37. The valve handle 41 has oppositely disposed extensions 47 that engage with the flange 2'7 to limit the turning movements of the valve.
As shown in Fig. 3, one of the extensions 47 engages the shoulder formed by the flange 27 to limit the turning movement of the valve in a counterclockwise direction and, when the valve is turned through the other 3 extension 47 engages the ange to stop it at its opposite limit of movement. In one position the pressure inlet 35 is connected through the passages 36 and 38 to the tangential inlet 21 and in the other limit of movement of the Vvalve the pressure inlet 35 is connected through passages 37 and 39 with the tangential inlet 22 to drive the rotor in the opposite direction.
It is to be understood that in accordance with the provisions or' the patent statutes, variations and modifications of the specic devices herein shown and described may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
