T. H. RHODES.
PUSH BUTTON AND CIRCUIT FOR LIGHTING GAS BY ELECTRICITY.
No. 276,285 Patented Apr. 24, 1883.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS H. RHODES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PUSH-BUTTON AND CIRCUIT FOR LIGHTING GAS BY ELECTRICITY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,285, dated April 24, 1883.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS H. RHoDEs, of the city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Push-Buttons and Circuits for Lighting and Extinguishing Gas by Electricity, of which the following is a specification.
In lighting gas by electricity a magnet and spark-points have been employed, and a reference is hereby made to Letters Patent No. 257,070,granted to me for such meansfor lighting and extinguishing. In that apparatus the electric circuit is closed to one magnet for turning on the gas and igniting the same, and to another magnet for shutting off the gas in extinguishing the light.
My present invention relates to the combination, with the gas lighting and extinguishing apparatus, of a battery, circuitconnections, and a compound push button having two knobs-one white, to be pressed lighting the gas, the other dark, to be pressed extinguishing the gastwo circuit-closing springs, and one contact-plate. By this means the circuitconnections are very much simplified and the risk of error in operating the push-buttons is avoided.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a diagram representing the circuit-connections, battery, and electro-magnets. Fig. 2 is an exterior view of the pushbutton, and Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the same.
The battery B is to be of any desired character. The induction-coil I is in the circuitconnection from one pole of the battery to the gas-pipe or ground. The push-button is in the circuit-connection between the battery and the lighting and extinguishing device. The wire a leads to the contact-plate b. The two curved springs c and d are connected to the wires cf, that lead to the electro-magnets g h in thelighting and extinguishing apparatus at the burner, the wires from these magnets being connected with the burner to form a ground. The cappiece l of the push-button covers the springs and contactplate. l t is provided with two push-buttons--onc, 0, which is white or light in color, the other, 8, which is black or dark. \Vhen the button 0 is pressed the spring 0 is forced against the contact-plate I) and the circuit closed to the electro-magnet g, which turns on the gas and operates the spark-points. When the dark button 8 is pressed the other electromagnet, h, is energized, and the gas turned off and the light extinguished.
I claim as my invention- The combination, with a battery, the circuitconneetions, and the electric gas lighting and extinguishing apparatus, of the compound push-button having a contact-plate connected to the battery, two circuit-closing springs connected to the wires leading to the magnets of the gas lighting and extinguishing apparatus, and two push-buttons-one of lightcolor, to be operated when lighting the gas, and the other of dark color, to be operated in extinguishing the gas-substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 15th day of November, A. D. 1882.
THUS. H. RHODES.
Witnesses GEo. T. PINOKNEY, WILLIAM G. Mom.
