Description

Filed March 25, 1954 127 04 fi.1fd9emsam INVENTOR ATTORNEYS United tates Patent Freon COVERING spoon Arvid R. Holgerson, Sacramento, Calif.
Application March 23, 1954, Serial No. 418,147
1 Claim. (Cl. 154-49) This invention relates to a floor covering block and more particularly to a floor covering block having a rug nap on one side thereof to be used on a floor in place of a rug.
It is an object of this invention to provide a floor covering block of the kind to be more particularly described hereinafter to be used in place of a wall to wall rug or to cover a smaller area of a floor.
It is another object of this invention to provide a floor covering of this kind which is formed of a plurality of blocks for use on a room floor as a rug, in halls as a hall carpet, a stair runner or other places of narrow or limited space.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a floor covering block of this kind having a rug pad bonded to a suitable backing so arranged to compensate for uneven floors and retard any skidding.
It is yet a further object of this invention to provide a floor covering of readily removable blocks having a rug surface on one side thereof to replace the conventional tile blocks having a hardened surface exposed for use to be tread upon by a user of the blocks.
A primary object of this invention is to provide a floor covering block of this kind which is readily replaceable on a fioor when one block becomes unduly worn or ruined by something being spilled on it.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter described and the novel features thereof defined in the appended claim.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a floor covering block constructed according to an embodiment of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the floor covering block.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of my floor covering block.
Referring now more specifically to the drawings there has been frequently occasioned the necessity for tile blocks to be used in place of a rug and it is a primary object of this invention to provide a floor covering to be used in place of the tile blocks with the floor covering having a rug surfac thereon in place of the hard surface afforded by a hard surfaced tile.
The numeral designates generally a floor covering block constructed according to an embodiment of my invention. A plurality of such blocks may be secured together on a floor so that the floor covering blocks 10 may be used in place of conventional floor covering tiles.
'ice
The floor covering blocks may be assembled together to form an entire rug or a part of a rug as a rug covering in a hall or on a stairstep.
The floor covering block 10 is formed with a backing sheet 11 which may be made of wood or some other relatively rigid sheet material. The backing sheet 11 has secured thereon a flexible pad 12 which may be formed of a sheet of rubber or any other resilient material which may be bonded or secured to one side of the backing sheet 11.
A fabric sheet 14 is secured on the pad 12 on the surface thereof opposite to the surface of the pad which is bonded to the backing sheet 11.
The fabric sheet 14 has upwardly extending threads 15 thereon which may be made in the form of a tuft or other rug forming material.
By the use of a floor covering block 10, described above, the floor covering block may be used in place of a rug or any part thereof in a home or other location desiring the use of a covered floor.
The floor covering block 10 may be secured to a floor by tacks or other devices for holding the floor covering on the floor so that the floor covering 10 may be easily removed from a covered floor or replaced when the occasion arises for replacing either the entire floor covering or any part thereof as would be represented by one block of floor covering 10. There may be some necessity for replacing only one floor covering block 10 in the case that something is spilled onto one of the blocks or it may be required to change a plurality of blocks when more than one block 10 has undergone excessiv wear.
While the specific details of one embodiment of this invention have been herein shown and described, the invention is not confined thereto as changes and alterations may be made without departing from the spirit and scope thereof as defined in the appended claim.
I claim: I
A floor covering block comprising a backing sheet formed of relatively rigid material, an intermediate cushion member bonded to the upper surface of said backing sheet, and a tufted member secured to the upper side of said cushion member, the marginal edges of said cushion member and said tufted member projecting beyond the marginal edges of said backing sheet whereby said cushion member and tufted member will be compressed about the marginal edges thereof by adjacent cushion and tufted members at the time adjacent backing sheets are disposed in edge abutting relation.
