Claims. (Cl. 292-202) This invention relates to fasteners and more particularly to a fastener for securing the respective sashes of the conventional double-hung sash combination.
A principal object of the invention is to provide a sash fastener characterized by simplicity, economy and ease of manufacture.
A further object of the invention is to provide a fastener of the stated type, the elements of which can readily be attached to the respective sashes and which can easily be engaged one with the other, or disengaged, as desired.
Another object of the invention is to provide a sash fastener of the stated character which exhibits convenience in form and improved functional characteristics.
The invention resides further in certain structural details hereinafter described and illustrated in the attached drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is a vertical elevational view of the fastener of the present invention shown in operative relation to a sash combination;
Fig. 2 is a view taken substantially on line 22 of Fig. l; and
Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of the sash fastener of the present invention shown with the constituent elements thereof in engaged position and showing their relation to the respective window sashes.
With reference to the drawing and more particularly to Fig. 3, it will be seen that a sash fastener is provided comprising a normally stationary element secured to the side rail 11 of the upper sash 12 by means of the fastening device 13. This element consists of two flat panels 14 and 15, the former being arranged to overlie the inner face of the side rail and the latter being disposed at a slight angular relation to the former, preferably in the neighborhood of 10. The element 16 comprises a fiat body panel 17 arranged to overlie the top surface of the lower sash 18, and tab portions 19 and 22, which, upon rotation of the element 16 about the pivot point formed by the fastener 23, are selectively received between the face of the upper sash and the panel of the element 10 as to engage the under surface of the panel 15 and preclude relative movement between the sashes. These tabs are preferably disposed at an angle of 45 from the plane of the body portion and are integral therewith. The element 16 is rotated to the posi tion shown in full lines in Fig. 3 by grasping the tab 19 and rotating the tab 22 through an are from the position shown in dot and dash lines. It will be noted that the fastener herein disclosed may be used in conjunction with the opposite rail of the upper sash. In that event the element 16 would be positioned so that the tab 22 could be grasped torotate the element counterclockwise so that the tab 19 moves through an arc to engage the under surface of the portion 15 at the opposite corner thereof.
It will be apparent from the foregoing description that the fastener of the present inventionis versatile in that the tab 19 may be utilized to engage the panel 15 in the 2,759,748 Patented Aug. 21, 1956 event that the element 16accidentally becomes arranged so that the use of the tab 22 is not convenient. It will be noted that the element 16 is apertured on the axis of symmetry but remote from the transverse axis so that when the fastener 23 is secured to the lower sash to the right of the left edge of the element 10, as viewed in Fig. 1 the above stated results will be effected. The economies afforded by the present construction are manifest. Both elements can readily be formed from ordinary sheet metal with a simple stamping assembly, and because of the simplicity of manufacture the fastener lends itself particularly to mass production.
I claim:
1. A fastener for window sashes of the double-hung type comprising a keeper member adapted to be secured flat-wise against a vertical frame surface of the upper sash, said keeper member comprising a flat portion adapted to lie against said surface of said sash and a second flat portion angularly disposed in downwardly depending relation from said first named portion, a latch member adapted to be mounted upon the upper surface of the lower sash and comprising a flat portion and opposed, angularly upwardly extending tabs projecting from spaced portions of the edges thereof, and means for mounting said latch member fiat portion pivotally for horizontal rotation upon said upper surface, said latch member being arranged so that either of said tabs may selectively engage the under surface of the angularly disposed portion of said keeper member.

A fastener for window sashes of the double-hung type according to claim 1 wherein the angularly disposed portion of the keeper member projects at an angle of approximately 10 from the plane of the upper sash, and said tabs project from the flat portion of the latch member at an angle of approximately 45 from the plane of the top surface of said lower sash.
3. A fastener for window sashes of the double-hung type comprising a keeper member including a mounting for securement thereof flat-wise to a vertical surface of the upper sash, said member being provided with a downwardly and outwardly projecting portion, and a latch member having a pivotal mounting for securement to the upper horizontal surface of the lower sash, said latch member having tabs extending angularly upward and operable upon rotation of said latch member selectively to engage the under surface of the projecting portion of said keeper member so as to preclude relative movement between said sashes.

A fastener for window sashes of the double-hung type according to claim 3, wherein said tabs are so arranged that upon rotation of said latch member either tab may engage said projecting portion of said keeper member and wherein further the angle formed by the outwardly projecting portion of said keeper member and the plane of the mounting portion of said keeper member is approximately 10, and the angle formed by the tabs of the latch member and the plane of the body portion of said latch member is approximately 45 5. A fastener for window sashes comprising a first member having a body securing portion and a downwardly extending keeper portion bent outwardly at a slight angle to the plane of said body securing portion, a second member having a body securing portion and tabs extending at substantial angles to the plane of its body securing portion, said tabs being formed on portions of the periphery of said second member, means for securing the body securing portion of said first member against the surface of one of said sash members with its keeper portion standing outwardly at an angle from said surface, and means for securing the body securing portion of said second member pivotally against a surface of the complemental sash member lying at right angles to the surface of the first sash member to which the first member is secured with the tabs of said second member extending outwardly away from the surface of said second sash member to which said second member is secured and in position to interengage said downwardly extending portion of said first member upon rotation of said second member.
