INVBNTOR WL/a/ w :Nba/Yeo W BY ATTORNEYS Y (No Model.)

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.,
WILLIAM NIELSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DECORATING ROOMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 275,692, dated April 10, 1883.
Application filed January 16,1883-. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
- Be it known that I, WILLIAM NrELsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, haveinvented new and useful Improvements in Decorating Rooms, of' which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved process of' decorating the walls, ceilings, and other parts of' rooms with raised ornaments; and it consists in first casting from a suitable pattern a mold of' elastic material, then filling such mold with a plastic composition, and applyingl the filling of' the mold to a wall, ceiling,l or other surface previously coated with an adhesive substance, so that, while the mold adapts itself to any sinuosities on the surface to which the filling is applied, the labor involved in the production ofthe desired ornaments is reduced to a minimum. y
In the accompanying drawings, which show a wall or the like decorated according to my invention, Figure l is a face view, and Fig. 2 a cross-section.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
1n carrying out my invention I model in clay or other suitable material a pattern corresponding to the ornaments which it is desired to produce. I then4 cast from such pattern a mold of' elastic material, preferably glue. This mold is then filled with a plastic composition7 and the filling is applied to the surface to be decorated, such surface having previously been coated with an adhesive 'substance. In this manner the ornaments representedby the pattern are reproduced on the selected surface, and inasmuch as by the uature ofthe material comprising the mold it readily adapts itself to any sinuosities ou such surface, the filling can be uniformly depressed, so that it adheres throughout the whole area of the ornament. When the mold has been filled each ornament thereby produced can be applied by the mold without further manipulation; and hence the desired decoration can be produced with a comparatively small amount of' labor.
In the composition used to produce the desired ornaments I employ the following ingredients: Whiting, about one pound; plasterof'paris, aboutoue pound japan, aboutone-half pound; glue size, about one-half pound; benzine or turpentine, about one-fourth pound.
other substances may be used for this4 purpose. l
Heretofore walls and ceilings have been ornamented by first filling a metallic moldsuch as a zinc mold-with soft plaster, so that it will project slightly froin the mold, then moving the filled mold against the surface, so that the plaster will adhere thereto, and finally removing the mold from the molded ornament. Myinvention differs from such method, in that I cast f'rom a pattern a mold of such material as can be cast and yet be elastic to readily conform or adapt itself to any sinuosities or uuevenness of the surface to be ornamented, thereby accurately fitting and adapting the plastic compound in the mold to any uneven surface. Further, I apply au adhesive substance to the surface prior to the application of the plastic ornaments, whereby the latter will be permanently fixed in position when the composition sets or hardens.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is-
rIhe Within-described process of'decorating, which consists in first casting from a suitable pattern a mold of a material capable otbeing cast, and which will be elastic when it sets, then filling such mold with a plastic compo sition, and applying the filling ofthe'inold t'o a surface previously coated with an adhesive substance, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof' I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of' two subscrbing witnesses.
WILLIAM 'NIELSON.
