3 Claims. (Cl. 51-55) lThe present invention relates 'to grinding machines, and in particular to a grinding machine for refacing rocker arms in valve assemblies of internal combustion engines.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide an improved rocker arm refacing machine which is simple in construction, easy to operate, and is adjustable to accommodate all sizes of rocker arm assemblies, together with the pedestal post.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a rocker arm refacing machine which will give a slightly rounded surface to the face of a rocker arm so that the rocker arm face and its associated valve stem have a point to point contact permitting more accurate adjustment.
These and other objects and advantages of the present invention will be fully apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the present invention,
Figure 2 is a side view in elevation of the present invention,
Figure 3 is an end view of the present invention showing in dotted lines the tilting or swinging movement of the motor with its attached grinding wheel, and
Figure 4 is a view in perspective of the present invention with a rocker assembly in a work position thereon.
Referring in greater detail to the drawing, the rocker arm refacing machine of the present invention comprises a rst horizontal guide rail and a second horizontal guide rail 11 positioned parallel to each other and having their one ends rigidly secured to an upstanding support member 12 and the other end rigidly secured to an upstanding support member 13.
A square bar provides a platform 14 upon which are adjustably slidable a pair of pillow blocks 15 and 16, having screw studs 17 and 1S, respectively, in alignment with each other and engageable with the ends of the shaft 19 of a rocker arm assembly, as shown in Figure 4.
The platform 14 is parallel to the guide rails 10 and 11 and is superimposed over the guide rail 11. A carriage rides on the guide rails 10 and 11 between the support members 12 and 13 and comprises a plate 2t) having an extension 21 on one side to which is pivotally connected the base of a motor hanger 22. The upper end of the motor hanger 22 has a pintle 23 on each side from which is suspended a cradle 24 supporting a motor 25 for swinging movement about the horizontal axis of the pintle. 'The motor 25 has its shaft in a vertical position when at 'rest and the upper end of its shaft is provided with a grinding wheel Z6.
A removable guard cover 27 is supported upon the 2,753,665 Patented July` 10, 1956 'I'he guard cover 27 is removable and a bar 31 is pivotally supported by the cradle 24 for swinging movement over the stone and carries on its free end the dressing tool 32 by means of which the side face of the grindstone is kept in proper working condition.
In use, the carriage is shifted laterally along the guide rails from one rocker arm to the next, the motor is energized and each of the rocker arms is, in turn, pressed into engagement with the side surface of the grinding wheel, the grinding wheel tilting or rocking While in engagement with the face of the rocker arm and providing the proper curvature to the face of the rocker arm.
An adjusting screw 33 bears against a portion of the motor hanger 22 to swing the motor and its associated grinding wheel about a vertical axis. With the motor swung rst to one side and then the other a rounded surface may be obtained on the face of each of the rocker arms providing a point to point contact of the rocker arm with its associated valve lifter when reassembled within the internal combustion engine.
The refacing of each of the rocker arms with a rounded surface permits more accurate adjustment of each of the rocker arms with its associated valve lifter, and feeler gauges when inserted between the rocker arm face and the valve lifter will ynot be caught or dented.
What is claimed is:
1. A machine for refacing rocker arms of an internal combustion engine comprising a pair of parallel horizontally disposed guide rails, an upstanding support member disposed at each end of said rails and rigidly connecting the adjacent ends of said rails together, a platform positioned between and carried by said support members in parallel relation to said rails, means carried on said platform for supporting the shaft of a rocker arm assembly in parallelism with said rails, a carriage slidably mounted on said rails for longitudinal movement therealong between said support members, a motor hanger secured to said carriage, an electric motor carried by said hanger for swinging movement about a horizontal axis toward and away from said paltform, said motor being mounted with the shaft extending vertically, and a grinding wheel secured to said motor shaft on the upper end thereof, said grinding wheel being engaged by and rocked about said horizontal motor axis upon rotation of a rocker arm on its shaft whereby the face of the rocker arm is ground to the desired curvature.
2. A machine for refacing rocker arms of an internal combustion engine comprising a pair of parallel horizontally disposed guide rails, an upstanding support member disposed at each end of said rails and rigidly connecting the adjacent ends of said rails together, a platform positioned between and carried by said support members in parallel relation to said rails, means carried on said platform for supporting the shaft of a rocker arm assembly in parallelism with said rails, a carriage slidably mounted on said rails on one side of said platform for longitudinal movement therealong between said support members, a motor hanger secured to said carriage, an electric motor carried by said hanger for swinging movement about a horizontal axis toward and away from said platform, said motor being mounted with its shaft extending vertically, a grinding wheel secured to said motor shaft on the upper end thereof, and a guard cover secured to said motor and covering the side of said grinding wheel remote from said platform, said guard cover having an exhaust port for dust and chips and being provided with a slot in its side adjacent said platform thereby allowing a rocker arm of the assembly to be rotated through said slot into engagement with said grinding wheel, said grinding wheel being engaged by and rocked about a horizontal axis by said rocker arm whereby the face of said rocker arm is ground to the desired curvature.
