CURTAIN-FIXTURE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,351, dated April 10, 1883.

Be it known that I, THOMAS BREEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Knowlton, in the county of Delaware and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window Curtain Hangings, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the ac companying drawings.

My invention relates to an improvement in window-curtain hangings; and it consists in the weights A, secured to the axis of the curtain-roller by the cords or soft wires, the springs K, the cord B, and tassel G, and brackets b, and in the method of securing the curtain to its rollers, substantially as shown, and for the purpose described.

In the drawings, Figure l is a front elevation. Fig.2 is a side elevation, and Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views.

B represents a window-curtain which winds upon its roller A. This roller has rigidly secured theieto, at each end thereof, a metallic pin, 1), having a thin disk-shaped head, 1), each disk-head forming a flange to serve as a guide for the cord or wire a, to which the weightsA are suspended. The diameter of pins b and bis much less than that of the roller on which the curtain is wound, as shown in Fig. 3, and hence the weights ascend and descend but a short distance in elevating and lowering the window -curtain and winding and unwinding cords a and a. The window-curtain is, as usual, provided with a roller, A, and a pendent curtain-rod, C; but for attaching the ends of the curtain to this roller and pendent rod a longitudinal slot, S, is. provided in each, and the end of the curtain caused to encircle metallic rods S, which are then compressed into the slots, thereby. rigidly securing the curtain at either end. The metallic rods as inserted in these slots are plainly shown in Fig. 3. The pendent roller is provided with the hooks d, to which lace or other ornamental curtain trimming may be removably secured. fully shown in Fig. 4, and these brackets also have rigidly secured thereto the metallic springs K, which are curved at h to partially encircle the axis of the curtain-roller, which axis it presses against, and by the friction thus caused balances the curtain against the pondent weights A and A, and thus prevents the weights from descending and the curtain being wound up on its roller.

The balancing-cord D is secured to the curtain-rod by means of the screw-rings f f, and to this balancing-cord is attached the cord and tassel G, which is passed over the top of the curtain and brought down on the side next the window. The loose tassel G has provided in the head thereof a suitable orifice, through which projects the cord B, and this cord, in continuation, passes up vertically through the center of the tassel G. Hence it will be observed that the tassel G slides freely on this cord and always occupies the same position.

The pendent weights A and A areadjusted as to the amount of their weight with special relation to the weight of the curtain, and also with relation to the force of the springs K, whose friction prevents the curtain from descending; and they are also adjusted in such manner that but a very slight force applied to the tassel G will cause it to ascend, and an equally slight force applied to it will cause it to descend, as the tassel-cord G, when pulled down, not onlylil'ts the weight of the curtain, but by its friction at the top of the curtain over which it passes causes the curtain-roller to rotate, and thus winds up the curtain.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination of the roller A, the pendent weights A, brackets 1), pins b, springs K, and cord and tassel G, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
