A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character herewithin described which simplifies considerably the construction of the implement chassis inasmuch as the conventional relatively heavy transverse wheel axle is dispensed with, as each wheel in my device is mounted upon its own axle and operates independently one from the other.
Still another object of my invention is to provide a device of the character herewithin described in which the location of the ram unit controls the depth of penetration of the implement, inasmuch as same acts as a stop when the implement is let into the ground.
With the foregoing objects in view and such other objects and advantages as will become apparent to those skilled in the art to which this invention relates as this specification proceeds, my invention consists essentially in the arrangement and construction of parts all as hereinafter more particularly described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure l is a top plan view of my device.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary side elevation showing the wheel mounting.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of the twin pump unit.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary side elevation showing the schematic design of one of the pump units.
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary view showing the release means of my pump unit.
In the drawings like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures.
The conventional implement chassis is normally provided with hydraulic means for raising and lowering same with relation to the ground engaging wheels, said hydraulic means either acting independently on each wheel or acting on both wheels simultaneously.
Both systems have the disadvantage that positive control of each wheel is unobtainable, as it is usually impossible to raise and lower each wheel completely independently of the other.
My device overcomes these disadvantages inasmuch as each wheel is provided with its own pump and ram unit but the operation of the twin pumps is facilitated by the close coupling thereof, so that the operator can use one 2 hand "to either raise or lower the wheels, either independently orftogether. i
Proceeding "now to describe my invention in detail, `it willb'eseen upon reference tothe accompanying drawings that Figure 1 illustrates an implement chassis generally designated 1, which is of substantially rectangular configuration when viewed in plan and includes transverse members 2 and side members 3. vIt will be appreciated that no implement has been shown in association with this chassis, but that any draft implement er conventional 'design maybe attached to 'the chassis in 'the conventional manner. v
A draft arm '4 extends through the longitudinal axis of the :chassis and is attached to l`the transverse members 2 `vby means 'of `Ubolt`s 5. At a point just above the *wheel 'stub Vafxle 131', an hydraulic cylinder an'd piston assembly :collectively designated -153 1is :pivot-ally :secured to the wheel arm by v'pivot pin 12k-said `a'tssenilflly fin'clinin'g upwardly an rearwardly to provide an adjustable diagonal brace for the wheel arm. Reference to Figures l and 2 will show upstanding support brackets 15 mounted upon the inner of the side members 3, said brackets being braced by diagonals 15, which extend downwardly and outwardly from the upper end of the brackets to the outer side members 3 of the chassis, as clearly shown in Figure 1.
The piston rod 13 of the hydraulic cylinder and piston assembly 13 is pivotally secured to this upstanding bracket 14 in any one of several apertures 16 provided thereon, it being understood that the selection of the aperture is dependent upon the depth penetration required of the implement carried by the chassis. For example the range of depth penetration with the rod 13 in the lowermost aperture as illustrated, is relatively shallow and, in certain circumstances, allows the associated implement to be raised clear of the ground whereas if the rod is engaged within the uppermost aperture, the range is relatively deep. Also it should be appreciated that the selection of apertures depends on the type of implement carried by the chassis.
Conduits 17 extend from the base of the hydraulic cylinder 13 to a twin pump unit collectively designated 1S and mounted upon the forward end 6 of the draft arm 4.
This twin pumpunit includes a casing 19 secured to the draft arm by U-bolts 20, said casing containing two independent pump units submerged in oil 21 which fills the casing to approximately three fourths full and which thus acts as a common reservoir. Each of these pump units consists of a pump- 22 together with actuating plunger 23 and conventional check valve 24. Each pump plunger 23 is actuated by pump lever 24 connected thereto by means of link 25 and mounted upon a common pivot pin 26 held between plates 27.
From the foregoing, it will be appreciated that by pumping the plunger 23, oil is forced through conduit 17 thus extending the ram or piston 13' of the hydraulic unit 13. When it is desired to retract the ram, the pressure within conduit 17 is released by means of a release lever 28, it being understood that there is a separate release lever for each pump. Both of these levers are also pivoted upon common pivot bolts 26, as are the pump levers 24.
Lever 28 actuates a release rod 29, which in turn acts upon a ball valve 30 carried within cage and seatings 31 and being in communication with conduits 17 by means of unions 32.
The ball valve 30 communicates via conduits 33 to the aforementioned common reservoir so that it will be appreciated that actuation of lever 28 will raise the ball 30 off its seating, thus permitting release of pressure in conduit 17 by virtue of the fact that the luid is then permitted to 110W back to the common reservoir.
Reference to Figure 3 will show that the pump lever 24 of both pumps are in close coupled relationship, as are the release levers 20, so that an operator can raise or lower either wheel independently or together by the necessary manipulation of the levers and that this operation can be carried out quite easily by one hand.
Insofar as the pump levers 24 are concerned, these include parallel horizontal portions by which they are pivotally secured to pivot bolt 26 by the ends thereof. These horizontal portions then curve upwardly and terminate in outwardly turned handle portions 24" so that the horizontal portions and upwardly curved portions lie side by side.
Since various modifications can be made in my invention as hereinabove described, and many apparently widely different embodiments of same made within the spirit and scope of the claim without departing from such spirit and scope, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification shall be interpreted as illustrative only and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim as my invention is:
In an implement chassis including a substantially rectangular framework, a draft arm extending forwardly from said chassis, a pair of ground engaging wheels supporting said chassis, wheel arms pivotally secured to the side members of said framework, an axle secured adjacent the lower ends of each of said arms, said wheels being mounted for rotation upon said axle; an hydraulic cylinder and piston assembly extending between adjacent the lower end of each of said arms and said framework and a twin pump unit on said draft arm connected to said hydraulic cylinder and piston assemblies, said pump unit including a pair of independently operated pump handles extending upwardly therefrom, a pair of independently operated pressure release levers extending upwardly and rearwardly therefrom, said pump handles and said release levers having a common pivotal mounting, said pump handles and said release levers being in close coupled relationship, said pump handles each including horizontal portions and upwardly curved portions lying side by side and each terminating in outwardly turned handle portions whereby either or both may be operated by one hand.
