1 Claim. (Cl. 220-113) This invention relates to a partitioned carrier for such products as bottle or the like receptacles to be formed from a sheeted material such as a cardboard, paper board or the like sheeted stock material, and to a foldable blank for such carriers characterized by the fact that they may be stored in collapsed condition for economy of space, or be set up quickly for loading with the receptacles or bottles to be transported.
More particularly my invention has for its object the provision of a cardboard carrier for bottles or like receptacles which include as the features thereof the association of a pair of main panels made from the sheet of cardboard, to which I integrally connect a bottom wall which is medially scored symmetrically to dispose the panels in relation to each other, arranging the same with the free ends of the sheet defining the main panels, each being sectionalized into a pair of handle forming segments joined to the main panels by end strips and intermediate hinging strips, the segments and end strips having side tabs which are glued to each other to form central stiffening ribs and partial partitions which are eX- tended in the set-up position to the bottom, thereby forming connectors with the bottom and further characterized by holding the same locked in the set-up position.
Further features reside in providing each panel with a set of handle forming segments having an edge tab forming, with the opposite handle forming segment, an edge closure to guide the other handle forming segment telescopically into nested position.
Further features reside in having the handle forming segments for each panel alternately of differing length, thereby being alternatively overlapped to guide the handle segments into the nesting position described and to have one set of handle segments joined in face contact to form a reinforcement for the set of handle segments. The construction described lends itself economically to fast assembly on a so-called straight line feed glueing production machine.
To attain these objects and such further objects as appear herein or may hereinafter be pointed out, I make reference to the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof, in which- Figure l is a plan view of a blank for a construction in accordance with one embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the blank assembly preparatory to achieving a set-up condition;
Figure 3 is a section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a section taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 2;
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the carrier in the setup position;
Figure 6 is a fragmentary perspective view of another embodiment of my invention.
Making reference to the drawing, I show a blank 10 of cardboard or like bottle carrier sheeting material such as paper board, comprising a front panel 11 and a rear panel 12 joined to each other by a bottom member 13 having a medial score'line 14 for ready folding. The
"nited States Patent 0 ICE bottom member 13, at one edge of the score line, has a notch 15 for purposes which will appear as this description proceeds.
To each side of the bottom there is atfixed the front panel members 11 and 12 along the score lines 16 and 17, respectively. The front and rear panel members are each formed with a main panel 13 and 19, respectively, said panels being sectionalized by cutting into a pair of handle segments 20-21, 22-23, respectively. The handle segments 20-21 are separated from each other by the cutting line 24. The handle segments 22-23 are separated from each other by the cutting line 25.
It will be observed that the cutting line 24 for the front panel segment terminates in a tab 26 and offset from the center line through the blank and that the cutting line 25 is set off from the center line and the blank in an opposite direction. The main panels 18 and 19 are likewise separated from the handle forming segments by hinging strips 2'7 and 28 defined by the cut lines 29-30 and 31-32, the latter cutting lines being directed angularly toward the margin by reason of the cutting lines 33-34.
The main panels have to each side, end strips 35 and 36, separated by score lines 37-33 for ready folding. The hinging strips 27-28 joined the handle forming segments 2% and 21 to the main panel 18 along the score lines 32 to each end thereof at an intermediate point. The end strips 35, 36 and handle segments 20-21 are joined to the side tabs 40-41 along the score lines 42-43. The handle forming segment 2%) has an edge tab 44 outlined by the score line 45.
But for the handle forming segments described, the rear panel 12 is symmetrical with the front panel 11 and the parts defined need not be more fully described than to indicate that corresponding parts are correspondingly numbered, with the addition of the superscript a. The side tabs 40 and 40a are formed with tongues 46 and 46a, respectively, by the notches 47 and 4701.
With a blank as thus described, assembly is effected by superimposing the front panel over the rear panel as shown in Figure 2, first inwardly folding the side tabs 40 and 41 as in a movement in which the fold line 14 leads. The facing surfaces of side tabs 40, 40a and those of side tabs 41, 41a are glued to each other to form a central stiffening rib to each side of the end strips 35, 35a, 36, 36a, and the handle segments 26-21 and 22-23. In this position the edge tab ,44 is folded along the fold line 45 and is glued to the handle forming segment 23 of the rear panel segment, bringing the tab 43 co-terminous With the edge 25 of the handle forming segment 23. The handle forming segment 21 thereby overlaps the rear face of the handle forming segment 23. It will also be observed that the edges 49 and 49a of the handle forming segments 21-22 are brought into co-terminous contact in the congruent position of the panels and are extended into the guide 50 formed by the fold line 45. In the congruent section the handle segments 21-22 are glued to each other.
Referring to the blank in Figure l, I provide finger cutouts 51 and 52, 51a and 52a in the handle segments 20 and 23, respectively, leaving tongues 53 and 53a as a remnant connected along the score lines 54 and 54a, respectively, each of the tongues 53 being formed with locking extensions 55. The handle segments 21 and 22 are formed with symmetrical finger cutouts 56, 57 and 56a and 57a.
In the partially folded position as shown in Figure 2, the handle forming segments 21 and 22 may telescopically slide into position Within the fold 50 to bring, when in limiting position, finger cutouts 56, 57 into alignment with the finger cutouts 51 and 52, as more clearly illustrated in Figure 5. The tongues .53 may be pushed through from the plane of the paper, as shown in Figure 5, 'to'engage the rib 58 which extends between the cutouts, thereby preventing reverse sliding of the handle segments from the telescopic position.
It will be observed that the movement of telescopically sliding the-handle segments 2122 into the guide formed by the handle segments 20, 23 moves the main panels from each other about the hinging strips 2728, 27a28a, and about the end strips 3536, 35a36a, to provide, in the illustration shown, SiX compartments, separated from each other by the intermediate hinging strips to eachside of 'the end strips and having the handle segments and side tabs forming separating ribs.
In the set-up position the tongues 46a may be interlocked with the slot '15 of the bottom, as shown in Figure 5, to restrain collapsing.
It will be observed that while normally I may store the carrier in the flat condition shown in Figure 2, I may permanently, telescopically slide one handle segment within the other and permanently store the carrier in the set-up position, securing a flattened position by hinging the mainpanels about the fold line 3737a and 4343a. Thus, I may provide a temporary set-up condition of the segments in relation to each other or the final nested position of the handle segments.
While I have shown the side tabs 40 and 41 and the edge tab 44 formed in folded position in relation to each other to form a central rib, it will be understood that by omitting one pair of tabs from the rear panel, connection of the front panel and rear panel may be effected by an overlapping joint. This is shown more clearly inthe embodiment illustrated in Figure 6 wherein a lap fold between the rear panel and the front panel is effected by the side tabs 40b and 41b being folded from the front panel over the rear panel, there being a separation along the edge 49c and 410 to permit an independent hinging of the panel segments from the handle forming segments. Likewise, I may optionally form finger engaging tabs 530 which are outlined adjacent their hinge lines 54c by the notches 55c which, upon reaching the congruent position and being pushed out of the plane of the paper, engage the side edges of the opposite cutout to limit reverse sliding, to lock the handle members to each other. Also I may include a tongue 46c, arranged to engage a slot 46d in the fold 456 to latch the handle form ing segments into engagement with each other once they have telescopically been guided into congruent position.
Likewise, while I have shown and described a tongue 46 on the ridge forming end tabs, I may provide tongues 47c which may be pushed into slots 150 in the. end strips, to hold the bottom 13 in the set-up position, as previously described for the same purpose.
It will likewise be observed that while I may make-the front panel and the rear panel symmetrical, that the edge 33 in relation to the edge 34a and the edge 34 in relation to the edge 330 may be otfset by extending the same at difierent angles to each other in order to distribute the forces occasioned by the weight of the receptacles as well as to overlap the same, thereby to minimize interlocking catching of these edges when the blank is in the partially set-up position, thereby limiting the movement of the panels in opposed direction.
It will be observed that by the construction which I have described, the blank for making the carrier lends itself readily to machines for glueing paper boxes or like receptacles, permitting what is generally referred to as straight line wor obtained by .feeding the work between folders and rollers, to avoid the need for any jigs about which the .glueing operation is performed, and thereby having a continuous flow of the work progressively from one station to the other without interruption.
By the overlapping arrangement of the handle forming segments, it will "be observed that telescopic nesting of thesesections is quickly efiected in that overlapping segments serve -to facilitate insertion of the handle forming sections 21 and 22 into the fold or guide formed by the handle sections 20 and 23.
In other respects it will be observed that I provide an integration of the bottom and side walls at all points with rigidity occasioned by the stitfening rib formed by the side tabs 40 and 41. Thus,:rigidity as well as compactness are secured from the minimum size of cardboard blank.
Thus it will be observed that I have provided a bottle carrier which is sturdy in construction and easy to set up for use and occupies the minimum amount of space for effecting great economy.
While I have shown and described the edges 33, 34 and 33a and 34a as of rectilinear outline and have shown the strips 27, 28, 27a and 28a of symmetrical contour, I may alter the contour of these elements in order to secure a different outline and greater supportingsurface. -For this purpose, the edges 33, 34, 33a and 34a may be of arcuate outline, and the connecting strips 27, 28, 27a and 28a maybe of different widths and therefore secure a distribution of the weight of the bottles being carried to provide greater lateral support and minimize tearing of the sheet or blank from which the carrier is made.
Having thus described my invention and illustrated its use, what .I claim as new and desire to secure by LettersPatent is:
A collapsible carrierfor bottles formed from a blank of co-operatively extended collapsible segments of cardboard material comprising a rectangular bottom member having a medial score line through its long dimension, two main foldable side panels extending from said'bottom member at the-opposite longitudinal edges thereof parallel to said medial score line; a foldable end strip extending from each of the sides of said side panels; foldable side tabs having their lower portions extending respectively from the lateral edges of said end strips, each of said side tabs having its upper portion foldably joined to a foldable central handle segment so as to form two adjacent handle segment portions for each of said side panels; one foldable hinging partition strip integral with and .extending from each of said handle segments, each of said hinging strips being integrally joined to and foldable with relation to the central upper portion of an adjacent side panel; each of the two of said handle .segments disposed at opposite ends of said blank having a plurality offinger cutouts and a foldable tongue formed with a locking extension in each of said cutouts, each of the other two of said handle segments respectively adjacent to said two opposite handle segments having finger cutouts registering with each other and with the finger cutouts of said first two mentioned handle segments, with the foldable tongues interlocking with said last named cutouts; said foldable side tabs'being infolded, the mating surfaces of said side tabs being glued to oneanother; and an edge tab extending from the upper edge of one of said handlesegments, said edge tab being folded-over and glued to the mating surface of the opposing handle segment; whereby the carrier has a continuous bottom and a seven ,ply handle interlocked by the tongues folded into, and interlocked with, their registering finger cutouts of the adjacent handle segments.
