To all whom it may concern e Be it known. that I, MELoHEsEDEoK Y. THOMPSON, of Arkadelphia, in the county of Clark and State of Arkansas, haveinvented certain new and usefullrnprovements in Fire- Places; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings,whieh form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in fire-places; and it consists, first, in a double cheapened.
fire-place, which is provided with doors and ventilators for two separate rooms, upon opposite sides of the chimney, in combination with a semicircular deflector, for the purpose of deflectingthe heat into either one of the rooms;-
second, in thecombination of adouble fireplace provided with doors and ventilators upon eachside, with a curved deflector, provided with suitable perforations, and which can be tilted from one side to the other, so as to act as a deflector for either room, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
The object of my invention is to provide a tire-place which can be used for either one of two rooms at a time, and thus be alternately used for both rooms, as occasion may require, and thus save the expense of a separate heater for each room, and at the same time allow the construction of the chimney to be greatly Figurel is a verticalcross-section of adouble fire-place embodying my invention. according to the height of the building. I This chimney is to be built between two rooms and will have an opening through each which is common to both rooms alike. In the bottom of the opening in the chimney will be placed a metallic plate, B, which rests upon a suitable base, and which fits snugly inside of the opening, without being built in any way in any of the brick-work. The two fronts O are ap plied to oppositesides of the chimney, and are then bolted together or secured in position in any suitable manner. Each front willbe provided with an ash-door, F, at the bottom, 5 5 which willbe provided with asuitable register, G, and with a register or ventilator, H, upon its side, and with suitable doors, I. The ashdoors will be hnn g so that when they are closed their lower edges will strike against the plate B, andthus prevent any draft to the fire except through. the registers. Pivoted in the top of the fire-place is the 7c semicircular deflector L, which deflector is adapted to be tilted or rocked from side to side by means of the rod or handle N, one of which may project into each of the two rooms, so as to throw the heat into either room that may 7 be desired. When the fire is intended for one room the doors and the registers in the opposite room are closed, and the deflector is then shifted so as to throw the heat out into the room. When the deflector is shifted it will So hang as shown in Figs. 1 and2, when all the products of combustion will pass up over its lower edge and in the direction of the room it is desired to heat. The flues above witl be built alongside of the flue for the fire -place in the lower room, but without in any manner increasing the thickness of the chimney, which will be the same all the way up.
By means of the construction above described a single fire-place is made to answer for two rooms, at a cost no greater than for a heater for one room alone. The closed front here shown prevents all liability ofaccidentssuch as constantly occur with ordinary open grates.
I am aware thatdouble heaters for two rooms are old.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim- 1. The combination ofa chimney haviugau opening through it so as to communicatewith two rooms, with the grate-fronts which are applied thereto upon opposite sides, and have the grate-bars supported between them, and a suitable deflector for throwing the heat into apartments, a deflector provided with suitable rods or handles by means of which it may be rocked or tilted, so as to deflect the heat into either of the two rooms, substantially as described.
3. The combination of a fire-place which is common to both of two rooms, aplate, B,which is placed inside and at the bottom of the fireplace, the two grate-fronts, which are applied to opposite sides of the chimney, and the swinging deflector, which can be moved so as to throw the heat into either room, both of p the grate-fronts being provided with suitable registers, substantially as set forth.
