4 Claims. (Cl. 128346) This invention relates to a circumcision clamp of novel construction.
Various types of clamps have been heretofore used in order to carry out the process of circumcision. All of the previous clamps have been unsatisfactory in one or another particular. Some of the former clamps have been difiicult to operate, others have been high in cost, and still others have been dangerous in the hands of careless operators.
In circumcision it is extremely important not to damage the glans penis after the foreskin has been removed since such damage, particularly where circumcision is being performed upon an infant, may result in the infants death. With the clamp of this invention, as will be subsequently explained, it is impossible for even the most unskilled operator, to damage the glans.
In addition the clamp of this invention, when used in the manner recomended, accords to all of the teachings of the ritualistic Hebraic rite of circumcision which requires that blood flow at the time that the foreskin it cut.
The invention may be briefly described as comprising a pair of pivotally connected mating jaws which are adapted to embrace a foreskin. Each of the jaws is provided with a cut-out portion upon its bottom surface in abutting relationship to its mating surface. Suitable means are provided for moving the jaws toward one another and securing them in the moved position so as to exert pressure upon the foreskin therebetween.
In the preferred modification of this invention the cut-out portions provided upon the jaws are arcuate in form and extend upwardly and outwardly from the mating surfaces of the jaws. The means employed to pivotally move the jaws toward one another and maintain them in the moved position comprise a stem member having a threaded end and an operating member upon said stem member.
The invention will be further described by reference to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification.
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the circumcision clamp of this invention.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the bottom jaw of the clamp shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the circumcision clamp of this invention showing the cut-out portions thereon with the stem member removed for clarity.
Fig. 4 is a detail view of the stem member of the invention taken from the front thereof.
Fig. 5 is a side view of the stem shown in Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view of a portion of the clamp of this invention illustrating how the jaws thereof are adapted to embrace a foreskin.
Referring now to the form of the invention shown in the drawings for a detailed description thereof clamp 10 has jaws 11 and 12 which are pivotally secured to one another by pin 13. Jaw 12 is provided with cut-out portion 14 and jaw 11 has overlapping portion 15. Overlap- 2 ping portion 15 fits into cut-out portion 14 so that jaws 11 and 12 are limited in their opening position, and so that the space between the jaws are limited.
Jaw 11 is provided with cut-out portion 16 on its bottom surface 17 thereof and jaw 12 is provided with cutout portion 18 on its bottom surface 19. Cut-out portions 18 and 16 are arcuate in form and are in abutting relationship with mating surfaces 20 and 21 of jaws 11 0 and 12. Cut-out portions 18 and 16 extend upwardly and outwardly from mating surfaces 20 and 21 of jaws ll and 12.
Jaw 12 is also provided with a transverse slot 22 at the front thereof which is open on three sides. Jaw 11 is also provided with a similar slot which is not shown in the drawing. I
J aw 11 is also provided with a diagonal recess 23 which is substantially at right angles to slot 22 and is connected thereto. In the preferred construction-jaw 12 has a similar recess 24 which is also connected to the transverse slot therein.
In order to improve the operation of the clamp 19 of this invention it is also preferred to make the leading mating edges 25 and 26 of jaws 11 and 12 rounded.
Stern 27, which is used to operate the device, is preferably flat as shown and has projecting pin 28 thereupon. The forward end of stem 27 is threaded as shown at 29 and nut 36 which bears mating threads is secured to the threaded end 29 of stem 27.
Stem 27 is adapted to fit into the transverse slots within jaws 11 and 12.
The operation of this device will now be explained.
Assuming that right handed operation is desired stem 27 is removed from clamp 10 so that the device appears as shown in Fig. 3. Jaws 11 and 12 are spread apart far enough so that they may embrace the foreskin to be removed (the adhesion of the mucosa binding the foreskin to the glans penis having previously been broken up by the use of a blunt probe and haemostats.) Pin 28 is then inserted into recess 24 and stem 27 pivotally slid into the transverse slots in jaws 11 and 12. Nut 30 is loosened far enough so that it will slide over jaw 11 when stem 27 is slid into the slots in jaws 11 and 12. The opening of jaws 11 and 12 is limited by stop 14.
Nut 30, which now bears against the upper surface of jaw 11 as shown, is then tightened thereby applying compression to foreskin 40 as shown in Fig. 6. Since cutout portions 16 and 18 are provided in jaws 11 and 12, and since these portions are adapted to fit over the glans penis 41, the glans cannot be damaged in this operation.
After the clamp is tightened so as to stop all but a small part of the blood flow to the foreskin, the portion of the foreskin projecting from the clamp is cut off and the clamp is firmly tightened to produce complete stoppage of circulation to the severed portion of the foreskin. After a few minutes the clamp is removed and the operation is completed.
If left handed operation of the clamp of this invention is desired pin 28 of stem 27 is inserted into recess 23 of jaw 11 and nut 36 caused to bear against the lower surface of jaw 12. The operation is otherwise performed in the same manner.
The foregoing specific embodiments of this invention as set forth in the specification and drawings herein are for illustrative purposes and for purposes of example only. Various changes and modifications may obviously be made within the spirit and scope of the invention and will occur to those skilled in this art.
It is also pointed out that it is impossible for the clamp of this invention to bear against the glans penis since stop 14 prevents jaws 11 and 12 from opening more than 5 mm. Thus only the prepuce may pass through the 3; opening between jaws 11 and 12 but the opening is too small to permit passage of the glans therethrough.
I claim:
1. A circumcision clamp comprising a pair of substantially flat pivotally connectedlcooperating'mating jaws adapted to embrace a foreskin, wherein each of said jaws is provided with an arcute cut-out portion upon its bottom surface thereof in abutting relationship to its mating surface and extending upwardly and outwardly therefrom, and means for pivotally moving said jaws toward one another and securing them in the moved position so as to exert pressure upon the foreskin therebetween.
2. A circumcision clamp comprising a pair of substantially fiat mating jaws pivotally connected to one another at the rear portion thereof, and'adapted toembrace a foreskin; each of said jaws being provided with a cutout portion upon its bottom surface in abutting relationship to its mating surface and extending upwardly and outwardly therefrom, a stem member pivotally secured to one of said jaws at the front portion thereof having a threaded end, and an operating member upon said threaded end adapted to bear against the other of said jaws so as to pivotally move said jaws toward one another and secure them in the moved position so as to exert pressure upon the foreskin therrbetvveen.
3. A circumcision clamp comprising a pair of substantially fiat mating jaws pivotally connected to one another at the rear portion thereof and adapted to embrace a foreskin; each of said jaws being provided with a transverse slot at the front thereof open on three sides, and a cut-out portion upon the bottom surface of each of said jaws in abutting relationship to its mating surface and extending upwardly and outwardly therefrom, a stem member movable within the transverse slots of said jaws pivotally secured to one of said jaws at the front portion thereof and having a threaded end, and an operating member upon said threaded end adapted to bear against the other of said jaws so as to pivotally move said jaws toward one another and secure them in the moved position so as to exert pressure upon the foreskin therebetween.
4. A circumcision clamp comprising a pair of substantially fiat mating jaws pivotally connected to one another at the rear portion thereof and adapted to embrace a foreskin; each of said jaws being provided" with a transverse slot at the front thereof open on three sides, a diagonal recess at substantially rightangles to said slot and connecting therewith, and a cut-out portion upon the bottom surface of each of'said jaws in abutting relationship to its mating surface and extending upwardly and outwardly therefrom, a substantially flat stem member having a projection at one end adapted to fit into one of said diagonal recesses within 'said jaws so asto be pivotally movable With respect thereto, said stem member being also movable within said transverse slots, said stern member also having a threaded end; and an operating member upon said threaded end adapted to bear against the other of said jaws so as to pivotally move said jaws toward one another and secure them in the moved position so as to exert pressure upon the foreskin therebetween. 5
