- "UNITED- STATES PATENT OEEICE.
JUDSOVN L. THOMSON, OF SYRAGUSE, NEYV YORK.
COMBINED WHIP-SOCKET AND REIN-HOLDER-- y SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,675, datedr March 27, 1883.
Application filed J une 13, 1882.
To alb-whom tt 'may concern.-
Be it known that I, J UDsoN L. THoMsoN, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State Vof New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Vhip-Socket Attachments and Rein-Holders Combined, of which thefollowing, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention consists in novel devices rfor securing the Whip-socket tothe dash-board,
and also .consists in apeouliar construction of the dash-board; and Figs. 3 and 4. are horizontal transverse sections, respectively on lines a: x and y y.
Similardetters ot reference indicate corresponding parts.
D designates the `dash-board,`consisting of a metal frame and a leather panel secured to f said frame and covering the same in the usual stylel manner.
S denotesthe whip-socket, of any ordinary This socket `is'arranged immediately back of the end rail,r, of the dash-board frame, and between them is placed a block, E,tted neatly in its position, with a good bearing on both the whip-socket and rail r. The three parts r, E, and Sare united bymeans of a metallic strap, a, extended around the rear of the. whip-socket and around the outer face of theV rail i, underneath the leather b, and terminating with overlapping ends at the side of the block E. Transversely through the block E passes a bolt, c, having at one end an eye, e, through which the strap passes. The opposite end of said bolt is provided with a screwt-hreaded axial cavity orsocket, e, in which works a screw, u, which passes through eyes in the overlapping ends of the strap, and has a head bearing against the exterior of the same. The sides of the block E are made concave, so as to allow the strap to be drawn together be- (No model.)
tween the whip-socket and dash-board, which is effected by tighteningthe screw u. This draft on the strap a firmly clamps the whipsocket in its position.
I am aware that whip-sockets have been attached tothe dash-board by means of a strap passing around and fastened together between the socket and support by a rivet; but such devices do not affordthe facility nor the ad- 6o justability of the attachment of thewhip-socket Obtained by my invention. The fastening of the strap by means of a rivet cannot be easily accomplished, owing to the want of a proper rigid support for resisting the requisite force for upsetting the rivet, and a-rivet clinched or upset at opposite ends does not admit of taking up any slack that may occur in the strap. Said defects are effectually obviated by the employment of the bolt c, in conjunction with 7o the screw u, `hereinbefore described, which greatly facilitates the attachment of the socket and admits of taking up the slack of the attaching-strap and tightening the same when required. 7 5
It will be observed that by passing the strap c underneath the leather covering of the rail r in the manner described and shown I maintain the leather on the outside of the dashboard intact, and thus preserve the `iinish of 8o the dash-board. From the top of the block E is extended an arm, f, rigidly secured or cast on said block and lying close to .the rear of the dash-board. From the end of the arm f projects horizontally nearly or quite at right 85, angles vanother arm, ff, from the free end of which projects vertically a post, l. The arm f/has as its junction with the arm f a vertical pintle, y, on which is hinged a gate, h, having between its hinged connection au opening 9o of sufficient size to allow a spiral spring, k, to be wound around the intermediate portion of the pintle. The upper end of this spring is made to bear on the back of the gate h, and the lower end of the spring is inserted in a hole in l the arm j', or otherwise rmly secured. The gate h is provided with two vertical lips, between which is clamped arubber block, t", the free edge of which is in proximity to the post l. One 'of the aforesaid lips o is extended roo nearly to the edge of the rubber block, so as to effectually support the same without depriv- Si :s
ing it of its rubber face. The spring k normally forces the gate iny the direction from which the rein to be held is applied to the reinholder. A stop or guard,m, projecting upward from the arm f and encountering the gate h, prevents the same from swinging past tbe post land thus loosing its hold on the rein. The rein is applied to the described rein-holder by passing the rein between the post Z arnd adjacent edge of the gate h from the guarded side thereof. The gate, being allowed to swing away from the guard and post, admits applying the rein as aforesaid.
Having described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure b y Letters Patent, 1s-
l. The combination, with the whip-socket S and dash-board D, of the interposed block E, the strap a, extended around the socket S and around the rail i, and terminating with overlapping ends at the side of the block E, and the bolt c, passing through said block, and provided at one end with the eye e and at the opposite end with the screw-threaded socket a, and the screw u, passing through the two ends of the strap and into the socket e, substantially in the manner shown and set forth.
2. The rein-holder arm j', cast on or integral with the block E, in combination with the st rap a and clamp-holte, substantially as shown 3o and set forth.
3. In combination with the strap a, the block E, having integral with it the arm f, the vertical pintle g, and horizontal arm f ,projecting from the end ofthe armf, the post Zon the free 35 end of arm f', the gate l1., provided with the block z', the spring c,wound around the pintle and pressing on the back of the gate, and the guard m, projecting from the arm f in front of thev gate, all constructed and combined sub- 4o stantially in the manner described and shown.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed myname and affixed my seal, in the presence of two attesting witnesses, atV Syracuse, in the county ofOnondaga-,in the State of New York, 45 this 31st day of May, 1882.
JUDSON L. THOMSON.
