H. MULLEN & ^J.NOBLE, J1.
LOUP PASTENING POR WHIPS.
No. 274,641. Patented Mar. 27,1883.
fvmllll UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRYl MULLEN AND JAMES NOBLE, J R., OF WESTFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
LOOP-FASTENING FOR WHIPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,641, dated March 27, 1883.
' Application filed December 6, 1882. (No model.)
To all 'whom t may concern Beit known that we, HENRY MULLEN and JAMES NOBLE, Jr., citizens of the United States, residing at Westfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Loop-Fastenings for Whips, of which the fol#v lowing is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in 1oopfastening devices for whip-stocks, the object being to provide a whip having animproved loop-fastening, consisting of a braidcovered ferrule, having said braid folded into each end of saidrferrule, and of a suitable loop and loop-fastening plug, as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings forming part of this speciieation, Figure I is a view, partly in longitudinal section, of a lash-loop combined with fastening devices embodying our invention. Fig. II is a side elevation, including a section of the end of a Whip-stock, showing the relation of the parts. Fig. III is a transverse section on the line y y, Fig. 1I. The section shown in Fig. I is about on the line .fr w, Fig. II.
In the drawings, a is the loop. d is a tube. e is a tube-covering. c is a plug, and b is the Whip-stock. In the construction of the said improved loop-fastening we make a cylindrical tube, d, of any suitable material-such as Wood, paper, or metal, or of leatherand plait or braid over it a covering, e, of the usual material employed in covering whips. In forming said covering on the tube We plait it upon a suitable former ateach end, so that it shall be longer than the tube, to provide ends extending beyond each end of said tube, which ends are turned inward, as shown, thus covering and protecting each end of the tube, and
forming a proper finish therefor, and at the same time greatly strengthening those parts thereof upon which the greatest strain is exerted when the loop is fastened to the tube,4
d, loop a, and plug c more perfect and firm, a
suitable cementl is applied to said parts previous to uniting them as aforesaid. Said plug c is of such length that quite a space is left between its inner end and the opposite end of tube d for the admission into the latter of the end of the Whip-stock b, and when the latter is inserted into said tube cement is applied thereto, thereby securing the loop-fastening strongly thereto. The said braided covering on tube d is susceptible of beingvmade very ornamental by the employment therefor of suitable multi-colored threads; and the loop-fastenings may be braided to correspond with the general finish of the Whips which they are intended to be used upon.
We are aware that it is not new to construct a loop-fastening for a Whip by securinga lashloop into a ferrule by a plug, and We do not claim, broadly, such construction 5 but What we claim as our invention is;-
A whip having a lash-loop fastening consisting of the tip-ferrule d,having the braided covering e, the ends -of which are folded inward at the ends of said ferrule, and ofthe loop a, having its ends secured in one end of said ferrule by the plug c, substantially as described.
