WOVEN MATTING Filed July 26, 1952 United States Patent C wovEN Mamme George Lionel Rodoiphe Longtin, St. Hohns, Quebec, Canada, assigner to Kraft Paper Products Limited, St. Johns, Quebec, Canada Application Jniy 26, 1952, Serial No. 301,027
Claims. (Cl. 139-420) This invention relates to improvements in woven brous matting and to the method of producing same.
One object of this invention is to produce a matting composed of warp and weft members which are so constructed and interwoven as to afford a relatively tightly woven matting which is characterized by substantial thickness and cushioning effect and is more impervious to the passage of water and dirt therethrough as compared with similar mattings of the same type.
Another object of the invention is to provide a matting of the type described which is composed entirely of twisted paper strands and may be produced and sold at a relatively low cost.
Another object is to provide a matting of the character described which is made by rst interlacing the twisted paper strands in a braided fashion to provide tubular warp and weft members which are then attened and interlaced with each other to provide a closely Woven matting which is of four-ply construction at each intersection of the warp and weft, with each ply alording a relatively wide band of the interlaced twisted paper strands.
The above and other objects and characteristic features of my invention will be understood more readily from the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan View of a corner section of a matting embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional View taken along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a braided tubular member in detail.
Fig. 4 is a View of a tube in flattened condition.
Fig. 5 is a View showing the manner in which the paper may be formed into twisted strands.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 5 generally designates a rug or mat which consists of interwoven warp and weft members 6 and 7 of hollow tubular construction. Each tubular member is composed of twisted strands of iibrous material, such as kraft paper strands 8, which are interwoven or braided together as indicated in Fig. 3. The formed tube is then flattened by any suitable pressing means, for example, by passing the tube through a pair of press rolls.
"rise The strands 8 may be either uniformly or contrastingly coloured. When the strands are contrastingly coloured they may be interlaced to provide tubular warp and weft members 6 and 7 of Various colour combinations and characteristics. The strands are preferably coloured by the use of fast-colour dyes.
When the matting has been completed as to size, lines or" stitching 9 are passed through the terminal portions of the Warp members and the outer interwoven weft member on two opposing sides and the terminal portions of the weft members and the outer interwoven warp member on the two remaining opposing sides to provide a marginal binding about the border of the matting. With a woven matting of the character above described, a padded flexible cushioning effect is obtained. Moreover, due to the thickness of each` warp and weft member and to the close interweaving of same, penetration of dirt and other particles is greatly reduced, thereby substantially reducing the dirt deposits on a flooring normally encountered beneath a loosely woven brous matting.
Having now described what I believe to be the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that changes and modications may be resorted to without departing from the scope and spirit of this invention as dened in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A matting consisting solely of interwoven substantially attened hollow tubular warp and weft members, each composed of interlaced strands of brous material.
2. A matting consisting solely of interwoven substantially flattened hollow tubular warp and weft members, each composed of interlaced twisted strands of brous material. l
3. A matting consisting solely of interwoven substantially attened hollow tubular warp and weft members, each composed of interlaced strands of paper.
4. A matting consisting solely of interwoven substantially attened hollow tubular warp and weft members, each composed of interlaced twisted strands of paper.
5. A matting consisting solely of interwoven warp and weft members, each consisting of a attened tube of interlaced strands of brous material.
