Il ff ATTORNEY United States Patent() DUMP CAR DOOR CONTROL MEANS Einar O. Lunde, Wyckoff, N. J., assignor to Magor Car Corporation, New York, N. Y., a corporation of Delaware LApplication September 19, 1952, Serial No. 310,447
4 Claims. (Cl. 10S-272) rIVhis invention relates to dump car door control means.
Thefinvention is more particularly concerned with a dump car wherein the body thereof is supported on an underframe for tilting movement toward one side or the other thereof, and wherein one or more doors are provided at each side of the body and pivotally connected thereto adjacent their lower ends, and a novel linkage disposed beneath the oor of the car body and operatively associated with the doors for permitting opening thereof upon tilting movement of the body.
It is a primaryobject of the invention to provide door control means in a dump car having a tiltable body wherein a door at each side of the body is normally retained in closed position, and wherein, upon tilting of the body toward one side or the other the corresponding door will be permitted to open under the action of gravity.
A further object of the invention s to provide control means for doors at the opposite sides of the tiltable body of a dump car which normally precludes opening of the doors, and which is operative upon tilting movement of the body to permit the door at the side of the body in the direction of tilting movement to open while maintaining the door at the opposite side in closed position.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent in the course of the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. l is a transverse section of the car body, with portions of the supporting wheels in dot-and-dash lines and showing the door control means in a normal position.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view similar to Fig. 1 showing the car body partially dumped and the door at the dumping side being partially opened.
Fig. 3 is a fragmental transverse sectional View corresponding to Figures 1 and 2 and showing the car body fully dumped and the door at the dumping side fully opened.
Fig. 4 is a plan view showing the relative positions of the several components of the door control means at one end of the car.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, the body includes a oor 11 and opposite side doors 12 and 12a.
The body is provided with opposite side skirts 17 and 17a which are slotted as indicated at 18 at the left of Fig. l for receiving the lower ends 19, 19a of door arms 20, 20a and said lower arm ends are pivotally connected to the body framing as at 21, 21a.
The arm ends 19, 19a are pivotally connected at 22, 22a to lengthwise adjustable link assemblies 23, 24 and 23a and 24a and the link assemblies are pivotally connected at their opposite ends as at 25, 25a to the adjacent ends of control arms 26, 26a which are pivotally mounted on pins 27, 27a, jointly with bell cranks 28, 28a and the icecontrol arms and bell cranks are normally inrcontact as indicated at 29 in Fig. 1. The pins 27 and 27a are mounted on the brackets 13 and 13a.
The inner ends of bell cranks 28, 28a rotatably support rollers 30, 30a on pins 31, 31a and such rollers normally bear on the center sill 16b as indicated in Figures l, 2 and 3.
Control arm extension stops 34, 34a are supported in depending relation to the floor 11 and-the doors and skirts are provided with cooperating stops 35, l36, 35a .and 36a.
Since the construction and action of the described link. age is the same with each of the doors 12, 12a, the opera-l tion of the linkage will be described in connection with the door 12 which is shown in Figures 2 and 3 in the opening operation as is occasioned by tilting the body 10 to the left in a dumping operation.
Upon reference to Figure l, it will be seen that in the normal position of the body, the door 12 is securely restrained against opening for the following reasons.
Any tendency of the door to open would cause counterclockwise rotation of the arm end 19 about the pvot 21 and which through link assembly 23, 24 would tend to rotate the control arm 26 and bell crank 28 clockwise about their common pivot 27. In the normal position, however, the bell crank 28 is restrained against clockwise rotation by the roller 30 which is in contact with the center sill 1Gb.
Upon reference now to Figure 2 wherein the body 11) has been partially dumped it will be observed :that the body is being rotated in a counter-clockwise direction about the axis of the fulcrum pin 14.
The counter-clockwise rotation tendency of the arm end 19 will now be a fact since the elevation of pin 27 will permit the link assembly 23, 24 and the control arm 26 with the bell crank 28 to assume an angular position as shown.
At this point in the dumping operation, the roller 30 continues to contact the sill 16h and continues so until stop 35 engages stop 36.
Upon continued rotation of the body, as in Figure, 3, the control arm 26 and bell crank 28 will separate, thereby providing for a full floating door.
Reverting to Figure 2, it will be observed that door 12a is maintained in closed position during the above described opening of the door 12 by the following means.
The door control arm extension 32a is pivotally mounted on pin 33a which is concentric to fulcrum pin 14 and the free end of the arm extension engages stop 34, and accordingly the extension is restrained against any rotation during the body tilting, and thus will hold the bell crank 23a, door control arm 26a, the link assembly 24a, 23a, and the door 12a in immovable position.
While I have disclosed the invention in accordance with a single specific structural embodiment thereof, such is to be considered as illustrative only, and not restric.
tive, the scope of the invention being defined in the subjoined claims.
What I claim and desire to secure by U. S. Letters Patent is:
