9 Claims. (Cl. 20-42) My invention relates to a pivotally mounted window sash, and more particularly to a window sash which is so pivoted that it may be swung through an angle of three hundred and sixty degrees.
()ne of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a window sash that may be swung inside out, so that both sides may be readily cleaned from inside the building and still maintain anti-leakwise reveals.
Another object of the invention is to provide a window sash in which the pivotal axis of the window sash may be shifted with respect to the sides of the grid of the facade in which the window sash is mounted.
A still further object is to provide a window sash which may be repaired or cleaned on both sides without the use of scaffolding.
Another object is to provide a window sash with a slidable sealing means at both the top and the bottom of the window to seal the joints between the window sash and the grid, and thereby make the window water tight Without the use of other Weatherstripping or caulking.
Still another object is to eliminate the necessity of a window frame and to close and/or seal the window against the grid of the facade of the building.
Other objects will appear hereinafter throughout the specification. 1

Figure 1 is a horizontal section through my improved window construction taken on a plane just above the top edge of the window sash.
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1, but showing the window sash shifted slightly to the left to allow its right edge to clear the grid of the facade at the right to enable the window sash to be swung to the dotted line position.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figures 1 and 2, but showing the right edge of the window sash rotated coun terclockwise from the positions of Figure 2, to the left side of the opening in the grid of the facade.

Referring to the drawings, A represents an opening in the grid B of a building in which a window sash 1 is pivotally and slidably mounted. This window sash is pivotally and slidably connected to the upper and lower edges 2 and 3, respectively, of the opening by two pivot means 67. One form of this pivot means is shown in Figure 7 and includes pivots 7 carried by the upper and lower edges of the window sash 1, and slots 6 in the upper and lower sides of the opening A. It will be understood that this form of pivot means is illustrative only, and that many variations of the pivot means could be employed. However, it is essential that one element of each of the pivot means be provided with a slot having its longer dimension extending in a direction parallel to the face. of the member on which it is mounted. This arrangement of the slot is necessary in order to allow the window sash to be moved laterally edgewise at is is moved to its open and closed positions. It is also essential that the distance between the vertical side edges of the window sash be greater than the distance between the vertical sides 4 of the opening in order to provide for the overlap required when the window sash is in its closed position. A sealing ring 5 or similar gasket means may be mounted on the inside of that portion of the grid against which the window sash engages to seal the joint between the grid and the window sash.
As shown in Figure 7, each of the upper and lower sides of the window opening is provided with a slot 8 which may extend from one side of the opening to the other. A vertically slidable bar 9 is mounted in each of these slots and carries a gasket ill to seal against the adjacent edge of the window sash and thus, together with the ring 5, make the window water tight.
The term facade used in this application is intended to cover any frame, panel, building face unit, or other structure that may be used to mount a window sash and/or panel in the side of a building facade or curtain wall.
It will be noted that when the window sash is in its closed position the pins 7 are centrally disposed in the slots 6 and are substantially equidistant from the vertical sides of the window sash.
While the improved window disclosed herein is shown and described as being mounted on vertical pivots, it is apparent that it could also be mounted on horizontally disposed pivots.
While the sealing bars are shown as being mounted on the grid, it is to be understood that they may be mounted on the window sash, if desired.
The operation The operation of the window as illustrated in Figures 1 to 7, inclusive, will now be described.
Figure 1 shows the window sash in its fully closed position, and as engaging the seal 5 on the facade. To open the window sash it is first moved to the left an amount sufiicient to allow the right edge of the window sash to swing past the right side of the opening. At this time, the pivots 7 will be at or near the left ends of the slots 6. From this position the window sash may be swung counterclockwise on its pivots first to the dotted line position of Figure 2, and then to the position of Figure 3. The window sash will now be moved from the position of Figure 3 to the right sufiiciently to allow the left edge to clear the left side of the opening, as viewed in Figure 4. The next step is to bring the window to the position of Figure 5, after which it may be moved to the left to bring it to the position of Figure 6, which is the same position as shown in Figure 1, but with the sides reversed. What was the inside of the window sash in Figure 1 has now become the outside.
Figure 7 shows the operation of lowering the retractible sill and raising the retractible head so as to permit the larger sash to pass through the top and the bottom of the grid.
The next operation, after the window sash has been installed in place, is to replace in position the manual or mechanically operated retractible head or sill so as to seal and to establish the anti-waterwise reveal and make the window water tight.
, The steps of the operation described above may be started from either side of the window; that is, the window sash may be moved from either the open or the closed position by either a counterclockwise or a clockwise movement.
The above description and drawings disclose a single embodiment of the invention, and specific language has been employed in describing the several figures. it will, nevertheless, be understood that no limitations of the invention are thereby contemplated, and that various alterations and modifications may be made such as would occur to one skilled in the art to which the invention relates.
I claim:
1. A closure construction comprising a facade element, an opening in said facade element, said opening having a plurality of sides, portions of said facade element adjacent two oppositely disposed sides of said opening constituting jamb portions for a closure element, a closure element pivotally and slidably mounted in said opening, said closure element having a plurality of side edges, portions of each side of said closure element adjacent two opposite side edges thereof extending outwardly beyond the sides of said opening and overlapping said jamb portions when said closure element is in its closed position, means for pivotally and slidably mounting said closure element in said opening comprising a pivot carried by one of said elements and slidably connected to said other element, said pivot being slidable in a direction perpendicular to the side edges of said closure element when said closure element is in its closed position and being disposed substantially midway between said two opposite side edges of said closure element.
2. A closure construction comprising a grid, a rectangular opening in said grid, portions of said grid adjacent two oppositely disposed sides of said opening constituting jamb portions for a closure, a rectangular closure pivotally and slidably mounted in said opening, portions of each side of said closure adjacent two opposite side edges thereof extending outwardly beyond the sides of said opening and overlapping said jamb portions when said closure is in its closed position, means for pivotally and slidably mounting said closure in said opening comprising a pivot carried by said closure and slidably mounted in a slot in said grid, said pivot being slidable in a direction perpendicular to the side edges of said closure when said closure is in its closed position and being disposed substantially midway between two opposite side edges of said closure.
3. A window construction comprising a facade element, an opening in said facade element, said opening having a plurality of sides, portions of said facade element adjacent two oppositely disposed sides of said opening constituting jamb portions for a window element, a window element pivotally and slidably mounted in said opening, said window element having a plurality of side edges, portions of each side of said window element adjacent two opposite side edges thereof extending outwardly beyond the edges of said opening and overlapping said jamb portions when said window element is in its closed position, means for pivotally and slidably mounting said window element in said opening comprising a pivot carried by one of said elements and slidably connected to said other element, said pivot being slidable in a direction perpendicular to the side edges of said window element when said window element is in its closed position and being disposed substantially midway between said two opposite side edges of said window element.
4. A window construction comprising a grid, a rectangular opening in said grid, portions of said grid ad jacent two oppositely disposed sides of said opening constituting jamb portions for a window sash, a rectangular window sash pivotally and slidably mounted in said opening, portions of each side of said window sash adjacent two opposite side edges thereof extending outwardly beyond the edges of said opening and overlapping said jamb portions when said window sash is in its closed position, means for pivotally and slidably mounting said window sash in said opening comprising a pivot carried by said window sash and slidably mounted in a slot in said grid, said pivot being slidable in a direction perpendicular to the side edges of said window sash when said window sash is in its closed position and being disposed substantially midway between two opposite side edges of said window sash.
5. A window construction comprising a grid, :1 rectangular opening in said grid, the sides of said opening being vertically disposed, portions of said grid adjacent said sides of said opening constituting jamb portions for a window sash, a rectangular window sash pivotally and slidably mounted in said opening, the side edges of said window sash being vertically disposed, portions of each side of said window sash adjacent its side edges extending outwardly beyond the sides of said opening and overlapping said jamb portions when said window sash is in its closed position, pivot means at both the top and the bottom of said window sash, each such means comprising a pivot on said window sash and a slot in the adjacent side of said opening, said pivots and said slots being disposed substantially midway between the side edges of said window sash.
6. A closure construction comprising a facade element, an opening in said facade element, said opening having a plurality of sides, portions of said facade element adjacent two oppositely disposed sides of said opening constituting jamb portions for a closure element, a closure element pivotally and slidably mounted in said opening, said closure element having a plurality of side edges, portions of each side of said closure element adjacent two opposite side edges thereof extending outwardly beyond the sides of said opening and overlapping said jamb portions when said closure element is in its closed position, means for pivotally and slidably mounting said closure element in said opening comprising a pivot carried by one of said elements and slidably connected to said other element, said pivot being slidable in a direction perpendicular to the side edges of said closure element when said closure element is in its closed position and being disposed substantially midway between said two opposite side edges of said closure element, and means to seal the joint between said closure element and said facade element.

A closure construction comprising a facade element, an opening in said facade element, said opening having a plurality of sides, portions of said facade element adjacent two oppositely disposed sides of said opening constituting jamb portions for a closure element, a closure element pivotally and slidably mounted in said opening, said closure element having a plurality of side edges, portions of each side of said closure element adjacent two opposite side edges thereof extending outwardly beyond the sides of said opening and overlapping said jamb portions when said closure element is in its closed position, means for pivotally and slidably mounting said closure element in said opening comprising a pivot carried by one of said elements and slidably connected to said other element, said pivot being slidable in a direction perpendicular to the side edges of said closure element when said closure element is in its closed position and being disposed substantially midway between said two opposite side edges of said closure element, and means to seal the joint between said closure element and said facade element, said last mentioned means comprising a slidable bar carried by one of said elements at the top and at the bottom of said opening.

A window construction comprising a grid, a rectangular opening in said grid, portions of said grid adjacent two oppositely disposed sides of said opening constituting jamb portions for a window sash, arectangular window sash pivotally and slidably mounted in said opening, portions of each side of said window sash adjacent two opposite sides edges thereof extending outwardly beyond the edges of said opening and overlapping said jamb portions when said window sash is in its closed position, means for pivotally and slidably mounting said window sash in said opening comprising a pivot carried by said window sash and slidably mounted in a slot in said grid, said pivot being slidable in a direction perpendicular to the side edges of said window sash when said window sash is in its closed position and being disposed substantially midway between two opposite side edges of said window sash, and means to seal the joint between said window sash and said grid.

A window construction comprising a grid, a rectangular opening in said grid, portions of said grid adja- 6 cent two oppositely disposed sides of said opening constituting jamb portions for a window sash, a rectangular window sash pivotally and slidably mounted in said opening, portions of each side of said window sash adjacent two opposite side edges thereof extending outwardly beyond the edges of said opening and overlapping said jamb portions when said window sash is in its closed position, means for pivotally and slidably mounting said window sash in said opening comprising a pivot carried by said window sash and slidably mounted in a slot in said grid, said pivot being slidable in a direction perpendicular to the side edges of said window sash when said window sash is in its closed position and being disposed substantially midway between two opposite side edges of said window sash, and means to seal the joint between said window sash and said grid, said last mentioned means comprising a bar slidably carried by said grid at both the top and the bottom of said opening.
