ICE-CREAM FREEZER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,298, dated March 20, 1883.
Application filed May 24, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom tt may concern;
Be it known that I, FERDINAND ESPEL, of the city and county ot'San Francisco, and State of California, haveinvented a new and Improved Ice-Cream Freezer, of which the followin g is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention consists of improvements in the construction and arrangement of a horizontally-revolving cream-can, ice-barrel, and cream-beater, the barrel being mounted so as to be readily detached from the driving-gear and turned upright for opening to charge and discharge the barrel and can, and the beater being geared so as to be revolved reversely to the way the can turns, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings,formin g part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved ice-cream freezer. Fig. 2 is an end elevation.

The said barrel is slung in a strong band, B, securely fastened to it by clips 0 and a bolt, D, and having trunnions E fitted in bearings F of the yoke G, by which the barrel is revolved and on which the barrel may be set upright when it is to be opened. i
The yoke G has a' journal, H, at one end, resting on the anti-friction rollers I, mounted on pivots J of the supporting-frame K. At
the other end the said yoke is connected to the side of the driving-wheel L by the lugs M N and arms 0, so as to be revolved thereby, the wheelv being mounted on the hollow journal P of the yoke, which rests on the anti-friction rollers Q, and has a shaft, R, working in said journal to turn the heaters S of thecream-can U by the shaft T, to which shaft R is coupled by a chuck, W, which slides on and off of the I square end of the beater-shaft by shifting shaft R forward and backward in said hollow journal P, said shaft R havinga stop, X, dropping down in box Y, against the front end of it, Figs. 1 and 2, to keep it in connection with the beater-shaft, and rising up by the stud Z to allow said shaft to slide forward through the hole a, when the beater-shaft is to be disconnected. The shaft R is geared by pinions b and d with the-crankshaft e, for turning the heaters S in the direction of arrow ll, and the barrel and can are geared with said crankf, to be turned in the direction of arrow 2.

The cream-can is supported in the horizontal position in the barrel by means of the hub l and by the feet a at the bottom, which have suitable foot-rests between the bars b on the inner side of the bottom b of the barrel.
The shaft T of the heaters has a step-bearing in the bottom of the can at c, and said heaters have end scrapers, 01, working against the bottom and cover, to keep them clear, the said scrapers being supported in the arms of the beater by pins 0, allowing a little play of the scrapers, and having springs j", to keep them in contact with the heads. There is also a side scraper, g, kept in contact therewith by "springs h.
The barrel has longitudinal ribs t" upon the inside, to keep the ice from rolling in the barshaft by internally-toothed wheel L and pinion it against the hub l of the cover at of the around said huh I, to prevent leakage. The trunnions E are made with large heads l, and inserted in band B from the inside, so that the heads bear against the barrel, which is recessed a little to receive them, and are firmly bound by the band when it is tighteend up, and are thus very substantially secured to the band.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the supportingframe K, of the revolving yoke G, journaled thereon, ice-barrel A, having band B, provided with trunnions E, journaled in the bearings F of the yoke, cream-can U, arranged concentrically in the ice-barrel and revolving with it, heaters S, arranged concentrically in the can,
and means,substantially as described, for operating the heaters and the barrel and can in opposite directions, substantially as described.
2. The combination of barrel A, cream-can U, beaters S, and the yoke G, the barrel being pivoted on the yoke, the said yoke having a hollow journal, P, to which its driving-wheel L is applied, and the beater-shaft, having its drivingfshaft arranged in the hollowjournal P, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the hollow journal 1? of the yoke G, driving-shaft R of the beat-- ers, arranged in the hollow journal and adapted to slide therein, stop X, and chuck W, of the beater-shaft T, driving-wheel L, crank-shaft e, and pinions b d f, substantially as described.
4. The driving-wheel L, mounted on hollow journal P of yoke G, and connected to said yoke by the arms 0 and lugs M N, substantially as described.
5. The packing-glandj,combined with packing-ring k, cover g, hub l, and cream-can cover m, substantially as described.
I 6. The combination, with the yoke Gr, provided with the bearings F, and the ice-barrel A, of the band B, clips 0, and bolt-D, and trunnionsE, passing through orifices in the bolt and provided with beads l, substantially as described.
