UNITED STATES PATENT' OFFICE.
LOEENZO D. BENNEE, OE eALEsBUEe, ILLINOIS, AssleNOE To GEORGE O. f ALDEN AND ALONZO o. OLAY, BOTH OE sAME PLAGE.
CORN-PLANTER CH ECK-ROWER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,259, dated March 20, 1883.
Application filed July/31,1882, (Model.)
To all whom 'it may concern: I
Be it known that I, LORENZO D. BENNER,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Galesburg, in the county/of Knox and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use- Vful Improvements in (Jorn -Planter Check- Rowers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whicll it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements ill attachments to corn-planters, for transferring motion from a knotted wire or cord to the seeding devices of the planter; and it consists in constructions and combinationshereinafter described, and set forth in the claim hereto annexed. I
In the accompanying drawings, which illus- 2o trate my illvention,Figure 1 is a top plan of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan seen from below. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation in the line x 9c in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 isa perspective, partly ill section, of a detail llere- 2 5.` inafter referred to.
Referring to-the drawings by letters, the same letter indicating the same part in the diiferent lgures, letters A represent four ordinary forked levers adapted to receive motion 3o from a knotted wire or tappet-wire, a, in the ordinary manner. The levers A are mounted on a short shaft, B, which is journaled in any suitable base-plate, (l, and extends through 'said base-plate, alld has on its lower end four cams, d d' d" d, which project `in different horizontal planes from the shaft B and in about coincident radial positions with the levers A. y f
The cams d d d cl may be constructed in 4o various ways; but I prefer them formed about as show n in the drawings-that is, with enlarged outer ends, slightly rounded or curved.
E 'is an oscillating bar, pivo'ted at e, and has a slot, F, nearits mid-length portion, which slot ,receives the end ofthe shaft B and the cams d d d" cl. One of the side Walls ot' the slot F -contains grooves ff', and the other side wall contains groovesftf.
The grooves f f permit the cams d d' to pass withoutcoming in contactwith the bar E, and the groovesf f permit the cams d" cl" to pass in a similar manner. The cams d d d 61/ come in contact alternately with alternate sides ofthe slot F, and thus give an oscillating movement to the bar E, and while one cam is acting on the bar to move it in one direction the cam which projects in an opposite direction from the shaft B is passing through one of the grooves in said bar, to permit of the movement of said bar E, as hereillbefore described. y
The bar E may be connected by any suitable rod, G, with the seeding devices of the planter, so that the oscillating movements of said bar will impart movement to said planter seedslides. It will also be seen that the bar E may be pivoted at either end.
In case the tappet-wire v is passedtransversely across the planter, as in solne machines, only one set oflevers, A, and one bar, E, will be used; butin case the wire passes along the side of the planter, then a set of the devices will be required on each side thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by LettersV Patent, is-
In combination with the shaft B, having radial forked levers on one end and radial'cams on its other end, the oscillating bar E, having a slot with groovesfff"f ill its side walls, substantially as and for the purpose specified. In testimony whereofI afix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LORENZO D. BENNER. Witnesses:
M. J. DOUGHERTY, FREDERICK A. WILLOUGHBY.
