W. PARSONSi PIB PLATE.
Patented MaJLZO, 1883.
i UNITED STATESV PATENT-V NOFFICEQ WALTER PARSONS, OF MEDFRD, MASSACHSETTS.
PIE-PLATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,219, dated March 20, 1883. Application filed February 9, 1883 (No model.)
To all whom it may concern v Beit known that I, WALTER PARSONS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Medford, in the county of Middlesex and State of' Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pie-Plates; and I do hereby declare that the same are fully described in the following speciicatiomand illustratedin the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in pie-plates; and it has for itsobject to prevent the juice or liquid part of pies from running over the edge and down the outside ofthe pieplate during the process of baking the pies in ovens, for which purpose my invention is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, Where- Figure l represents a plan view, and Fig. 2 a central longitudinal section, of my improved pie-plate. Figs. 3 and 4 represent in plan and longitudinal section amoditication of rnyinvention.
Similarletters refer to similar parts wherever they occur o n the ditferent parts 'of the draw-` ings.
c represents the bottom of the pie-plate, and a represents the curved side or rim, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. Outside of the rim a', Ilocate an annular groove or gutter, a, which may be made in one piece with the rim a', or secured to it by means of solder or other fastening medium, as represented in Figs. l and 2. Such groove may be made semicircular in section, or V-shaped, or ot" any other sectional shape, as may be desired; or said groove or gutter may be made separate from the rim of the pieplate, so as to be detachable from the latter, if so required, as shown `in Figs. 3 and 4, in which the annular groove or gutter a" is preferably provided with an annular ange, c', adapted to tit on the inside ot' the rim a ot' the pie-plate, as shown in Fig. 4. The annular groove or gutter a" is adapted to receive the l overflow of thejuice or liquid contents of the pie while being baked in the oven, thus preventing such part of the pie from running over the upper edge ot' the rim a' and down the outside of the latter. plate may be made of metal, earthenware, or porcelain to equal advantage, and the annular groove or gutter a" may be made in one piece, or firmly attached to the pie-plate rim, or detachable from it, as may be desired. In making the invention from sheet metal I prefer to make the annular groove c in one piece with the pieplate a a; but if the latter is made of porcelain or eartheuware I may prefer to make the annular groove a" ot' metal, and detachable from the pie-plate, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. Either construction and arrangement is practical, and answers the purpose for which l have intended it. By the use ot' such an overflow groove or gutter Non the outside of the upper edge of the riln d the unsightly and annoying' overflow ot' the sticky juice or liquid part of the pie'on the outside of the pie-plates is entirely obviated, and pie-plates ot my improved construction may be taken from the oven and placed directly upon tablecloths without soiling the latter..
Having thus fully described the nature and construction of my invention, I `wish to secure by Letters Patent, and-claim- The herein-described improvement in pieplates, consisting of au annular groove or gut- This my improved pierim et', and adapted to receive the juicy over flow of pies While being baked, in a mannerV as herein set forth.
In testimony whereof I have aliixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
