PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES E. MERRIFIE LD, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
STRAW-STACIKING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,134, dated March 20, 1883. Application filed November 20, 1882. (No model.)
all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. ll/IERRI- FIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing the working parts when ready for'transportation. l attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in phich Figure l is a perspective view of the entire machine ready for operation. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section, through turn-table and its immediate connections, on line a: a: on Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a top view, showing the turn-table and the manner of transmitting the power.
The same letters refer to the same or corresponding parts throughout the several views. The derrick O is operated on truck A at the front of the straw-stacker. To-one of the spars, 0, is secured the Windlass D. From it the cord at runs up through guide E to',standing pulley E, then down through running pulley E and up to staple or fastening c,where it is secured. The staple or fastening e and ptilley E can be secured to the cross-bar, as
shown, or to the spars of the derrick; but if fastened to said spars, staple 6 must be secured to a point on one spar just as high as the standing'pulley E on the other spar.
The driving-belt H from the thrashing-ma chine, or the like, operates pulleys h and h on horizontal shafts. Pulley h on shaft 8 operates pulleys k and h on vertical shaft m by a belt. Pulley k on shaft m operates pnlleysg and you horizontal shaft s by a belt. Pulley g on shafts operates pulley g on the hori. zontal shaft .9 hya belt; and shaft s operates the straw-stacker. In place of pulley h on horizontal shaft 8, pulleys h and Woo vertical shaft m, and pulley g on. horizontal shaft 8,
with their connecting-belts, chain-pulleys and chains can be used.
The turn-table J is supported by frame or standards .B B, which are hinged or pivoted to the carriage A, in order to allow said standards to be folded down during transportation, the standards being kept in. an erect position during the operation of the machine by uprights and clamps. The turn-table J is formed of -stationary wheel I and revolving wheel I, and these are held in their relative position to each other by clamps R It, secured to wheel 14.
On the under side of wheel I are secured socket-plates a n. One end of each of the braces N N are inserted into sockets in plates n n. -The other ends are notched to fit onto cross-rail of truck. The wheel I of turn-table is hinged to standards B B .hy hinges '13 i.
By the use of standing pulley E and running-pulley E in connection with windlass D, the'power is nearly doubled. By the manner of transmitting the power from the thrashing-machine or the like I dispense with all beveled gearing or cog-wheels. .By hinging the turn-table, J to standards B B the turntable will lie upon the platform of the truck,-.
and relieves it from the weight of the derrick or stacker during transportation. By the bracing of turn-table J with braces N N the. turn-table becomes more rigid and the operating of it correspondingly easier, and the wear andtear of machinery during operation greatly diminished. By the clamps It It the wheels I and I are held in their places and the separating of them during operation or transportation prevented.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,is-
The combination, in a turn-table, of pivoted supports B B, hinges i i, wheels I and I,
clamps It It, socket-plates n -n,and braces N N,
substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
Int'estimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES E. MERRIFIELD.
