MACHINE FOR DRILLING WELLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,120, dated March 20, 188:.
' Application filed March 31,1882. Renewed January 2, 1883. (No model.)
ing-rig between the well and engine-pulley,
and in the accompanying drawings, which is made a part of this specification, the engine or apparatus transmitting power to the bandwheel is not illustrated, as it constitutes no part of this invention. i
The object of this invention is to afford a simple, cheap, and portable machine for drilling wells. I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the machine built upon a platform and that resting upon trucks. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same.
Similar letters relate to similar parts th roughout the views. l
a is a band-wheel, which receives the power from the engine by means of a belt or band and transmits it to the other parts of the machine in the manner hereinafter described.
his the bull-wheel, attached to the axle n, upon which the drilling-cable is attachedand wound.
It is the drilling-'cable,one end woundaround the bull-wheel shaft at, running thence through the temper-screw and cross-head e, thence under the pulleyf and over the pulley g, and
its extremity attached to the tools I.
o isa friction-wheel attached to the axle 0, upon which the sand or bailer line It is wound at one end, the other end extending to the derrick. This line is to run over a pulley in the derrick, which pulley is not shown in the drawings.
attached to the upright'ports,so as to be moved backward and forward by means of pitmen attached to the hand-levers h h' at one end, the others attached to the long arms of the suspended levers. Into these suspended levers one of the gudgeons of the axles of the V bull-wheel b and friction-wheel c are fixed, re-
spectively.
.m is the guide upon which the cross-head 6 plays.
The machine is operated as follows: We apply the hand at the lever h and move it backward until the bull-wheel b no longer rests crank and pitman connecting the band-wheel axle with the cross-head e, which is in turn made fast to the cable It, the cross-head e is caused to move forward and back, which in turn, by the action of'the cable moving under and over the pulleysf and 9, gives an upward and downward motion to the tools I. As the depth of the well increases the cable must be let out, which is done by turning the temperscrew to which the cable is made fast in the crosshead c.
When it becomes necessary to clean out the mud and sand accumulated in the well by the drilling, we draw out the tools in the following manner: Remove the end of the pitnnan from the band-wheel crank, loosen the cable from the temper-screw at cross-head 6, apply the hand at the lever h, and throw the bull-wheel 1) against the friction-wheel a, which, when the band-wheel is again put in motion, will cause the cable to be wound upon the shaft n and the tools drawn from the well. We then attach the bailer to the line It and let it lall to the bottom of the well by gravitation. Then, to raise the bailer, we apply the hand at the lever h, throwthe friction-wheel 0 against the band-wheel a, which causes the axle o to turn and wind the line It until the bailer is out of the well, when we reverse the lever, empty the bailer, and repeat the operation until the mud, &c., is removed, when we again connectthe pitman with the crank of the band-wheel axle, lower the tools, make fast the cable to the temper screw, and again apply the power, and the drilling is thus effected.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A portable machine for drilling wells,
having a, cross-head, 6, running upon horizcnwheels a and. c, bull-wheel b, and cicss-head tal guides m m, combined with a temper-screw e, substantially as herein described and speciby which the cable is adjusted while in the fled.
operation of drilling, substantiallyas described LEWIS A. HARDISON. 5 and set forth. Witnesses:
2. In a portable machine for drilling wells, W. B. GRAVES, the combination of the band-wl1eel a, friction- A. H. LOW.
