MACHINE FOR FLANGlNG CIRCULAR PLATES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,115, dated March 20, 1883.

To all ivhom it may concern: I
Be it known that 1, JOHN T. DUFF, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Flanging Circular Plates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in machines for flanging circular plates; and it consists in two adjustable horizontal rolls placed side by side, between the ends of which the edge of the circular plate to be flanged is inserted. The plate is attached to a verticallyrevolving disk or head, over which its edge projects, which projecting edge is inserted between the ends of the rolls, and by them held whilethe disk with its support moves to the extent of a quarter of a circle to the right or left, until its face is on a straight line with the ends of the rolls, when the flange is completed.
The accompanying drawings represent my invention.
Figure 1 represents a plan view of the machine; Fig.2, a side View of the same. Fig. 3 represents the under side of the quadrant on which the guide and its support stand; Fig. 4, cross-section of the disk and its support.
On the frame a are two adjustable journalbeds, b b, on which the shafts e e, that carry the gear-Wheels d 01, rolls ff, driving-pulley v,and fly-wheelw,are jonrnaled. Thejournalbeds b b are adjustable by the screws 0 a, so that the rolls can be made to approach each other more or less, as may be required to impinge on the plate to be flanged, be it of any thickness whatever. The rollsff' at the forward ends of the shafts c e, at the outside of the frame, are operated by the pulley c at the end of one of the shafts and the gear-wheels d d. Should the two wheelsd d be moved so far apart that their teeth no longer engage, the friction of the rollf against the'side of the plate being flanged will be sufficient to cause the roll f to revolve with the one f.
Under the forward ends of the rolls, at the center '5 of the semicircle formed by the baseplate g, is pivoted the arm which holds the frame h in place as it is moved back and forth on the base-plate. 0n the circular part of the base-plate are suitable slide-bearings to secure a steady motion to the quadrant hwhen turning on it. The quadrant carrying the support q'of the guide a is, by an arm, 70, pivoted at i, held and guided on the slide-bearings outhe base-plate g. The pivott' is placed at the center of the circle formed by the circular base g, and may be entirely separate from the machine.
On the guide nis an adjustablejourual-box, s, in which the verticallyrotating disk m is journaled, the box being movable toward or away from the faces of the rolls, by means of a screw, or in any other suitable manner.
At the under side of the quadrant h is a rack, that gears with the wheel a: under the base-plate, which wheel is placed near the outer end of the arm of the base-plate, upon a shaft, and turned by a wheel or pulley, 2, at the end of 'that shaft. Thus the guide it, with its support q, is made to partially revolve on the stationary base-plate until it arrives at the end. of the semicircle, on a straight line with the faces of the rolls, having passed over a 1 a suitable holder, and both revolve together. 8 5
If, after a proper adjustment of the rolls, so
as to impinge upon the protruding edge of the metallic plate inserted between them, the pulleys 'v and z are set in motion, the quadrant IL with its superincumbent mechanism begins to move around on the base-plate g. The disks face, with the metallic plate attached to it, re mains during its motion around the centert' on a radial line of the circle in which it moves, and causes thereby the edge of the metallic plate, 5 thatisretaiued in its first position between the rolls, gradually to be bent, and when the disks face arrives on a direct line with the front of the rolls, or at a right angle to its first positiou,the rectangular flange is completed. Dur- 10.) ing the circular rotation of the quadrant the edge of the metallic plate is by the revolvingrolls carried onward, so that the plate and disk are made to revolve in proportion to the rapidity of motion of the rolls.
From the foregoingit will be observed that in this machine many of the complicated de vices in flanging-machines heretofore in use are done away with. The-use of pivoted tables, springs, cams,and otherdevicesthatfrequently encumber the machinery is avoided, and screws only applied to eft'eotan adjustment suited to all thicknesses of the metallic plates. Free access ways proved a'diificult task, which few, if any,
have accomplished; but with the machine described the difficulty ceases, and no hammering is required to make the flanges what they ought to be-rectangular.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- Ina Hanging-machine, the combination of adjustable head m, and the screw and its opv crating mechanism, substantially as shown.
