UNITED STATES PATENT- OFFICE,
LEVI M. HAWES, OF HAMPTON FALLSpNEW HAMPSHIRE.
CATTLE-TIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 273,986, dated March 13, 1883.
Applicationfiled December 23.1882. (No model.)
, ton Falls, in the county of Bockinghaln and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Cattle-Tie, of whichthe' following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to cattleties, and has for its object to-providea simple, inexpensive, and efificient device for tying cattle or other live stock in their stalls and at other places, that will be easy of adjustment to suit varying sizes of animals, and that will admit of free play of the'animals head in feeding and similar movements. a
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of my improved cattle-tie. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof, showing the device applied to the animal. Fig. 3 is a sectional detail view of the catch on the end of the yoke.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a yoke-piece, which goes over and partly around the animals neck, and has substantially an inverted-hook -shape. From the top of this yoke extends a chain or rope, B, which passes up and over a pulley, 0, suspendedpreterably by a rod, D, from a beam, E, overhead. The chain B passes down from the pulley U to another pulley, F, journaled at the, side of the yoke-piece, from whence it continues down and around a pulley, G, arranged on the floor H, and up to the lower end, I, of the yoke, to which it is secured. By reason of thisarrangement of the chain that suspends the yoke the latter is capable of vertical play by movement of the animals head, as shown in dotted lines,
Fig.2 of the drawings. The yokeis secured on the head of the animal by meansof a chain or rope, J,extendingfrom itslower end up and over its upper hooked-shaped end, K. This chain J is retained on the end K by means of a gravity-plate, L, that is pivoted to the outer end of an extension or arm, M, on the end-'K and works in a slot, N, in said arm. To disengage the chain J from the end K when it is desired to remove the yoke from the neck of the animal, it is only necessary to lift the gravityplate L up with the fin ger, when the said chain can be readily slipped over the hook-shaped end.
O designates a chain or rope that extends from the lower end, I, of the yoke down to the floor H, where any of the links or loops of the said chain are adapted to he engaged by a clevis, P, secured to the'floor. By adjusting this chain the slack of the chain by which the yoke is suspended is taken up, so that the device can be adjusted to suit different heights of animals.
The operation and advantages of my invention are obvious. It can be quickly and conveniently adjusted on the animal, and will not torture or'inconvenience the latter, as all the weight is borne by the suspending-chain.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of a yoke to be secured on the neck of the animal, a suspending-chain extending from the top of the yoke up and overapulley suspended above, and from thence down and under a pulley secured to the-floor, and up to the lower end of the yoke, and an adjusting chain or rope extending from the lower end of the yoke to an engaging device on the floor, as set forth.
2. The combination, with the inverted-hook shaped yoke having a curved upper end, above which is pivoted a gravity latch-plate, of a chain or rope extending from its lower end up, and adapted to engage the upper end of the yoke and be retained thereon by the gravityplate, asset forth.
3. The combination of the inverted-hookshaped yoke, the suspending-chain secured at its ends to the top and bottom of the yoke and extending above and below the same, around suitably-arranged pulleys, a chain or rope ex- .tending from the lower end of the yoke up to its upper end, and an adjusting chain or rope LEVI MELOBER HAWES.
