SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 273,879, dated March 13, 1883.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DANlEL H. MURPHY, of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Explosives, of which the following is a description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, where-- Figure l is a side view of a toy bomb. 2 is a view in central vertical section parallel to the hammer. Fig. 3 is a view in central vertical section in a plane at right angles to that of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a side view of a toy pistol embodying my invention.
My invention relates to the class of toys designed to explode caps or wafers of fulminate arranged upon a tape; and it consists mainly in the form and arrangement of the feed and stop mechanism.
In the accompanying drawings my device is shown as applied to a toy bomb and a pistol, these beingtwo of the many forms in which it may be used.
Theletter a denotes a sphere or ball of metal,
2 preferably cast; I), a guide or loop, usually of wire; 0, a bridge or stop spanning the feedway, and fixed at such a distance from the face of the ball as to permit the passage between them of a thin tape or strip, d, of flexible ma- 0 terial having considerable tensile strength, as linen, cotton, paper, or the like. At intervals upon this strip are fixed disks or caps e, of fulminate, raised above the surface, making the strip materially thicker at these points, so that 5 when the strip is slipped under the stop it for the stop in the face of the hammer allows it to be readily pressed upon the anvil on either side of the feedway.
5 To use the bomb the tape is slipped under the stop, through the feedway, half around the ball, and up through the loop until a cap reaches the stop. By grasping the upper end of the tape the whole device is suspended, and by dropping it onto the ground the cap is exploded between the hammer and the anvil. When the cap explodes the tape is thinned at that point, and when the bomb is again raised by the tape it slips or feeds under the stop till the next cap is arrested by the stop in the proper position to be exploded, as before, and so on with successive caps.
In Fig. 4 a device is shown in which the tape is fed by means of the band 11, of indiarubber, passed over the sight 6 and hooked to the end of the tape. The feedway, stop, and the method of operation in feeding are substantially the same as in the bomb; but the caps are exploded by the ordinary hammer, spring, and trigger ofthe pistol.
I claim as my invention- 1. In combination, an anvil, a, bearing a swinging l1ammer,f, a guide, I), a stop, 0, spanning the feedway, and a strip. (1, of flexible material, bearing the explosive pellets, and fed under the stop bythe Weight of the device, all substantially as described.
2. In combination, the weight or anvil a, bearing loop or guide, 1), stop 0, and hammer f, pivoted or loosely secured tothe anvil, all substantially as described.
3. In combination, a strip of flexible material provided at intervals with projecting ex plosive pellets, an anvil having afeedway spanned bya stop device which holds the pellet, by contact with the stop, in position to be exploded, mechanism whereby the tape is advanced along the feedway only after the explosion of the pellet next hack of the stop, and exploding mechanism, all substantially as described.
