Jlj-iforney UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SIDELL E. FISH, OF GREENPOR'I, NEW YORK.
DENTAL lMPRESSlON-CUP.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 273,833, dated March 13, 1883.
Application filed August '2, 1882.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIDELL E. FISH, of Greenport, in the county of Suffolk and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dental ImpressiOn Cups; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and
to the letters of reference marked thereon,
making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to the rigid cups used in dentistry for holding the plaster ot'- paris while taking impressions of the upperjaw and roof of the mouth preparatory to making a plate for artificial teeth. In the use of these dental impression-cups the rear end thereof is closed by means of a wall or flange of wax to prevent the plaster from falling on the tongue or palate and gagging the patient. This flange of wax is fashioned by the operator to conform. as nearly as possible, to the outline of the roof of the mouth as best he may, being guided in the operation,at'ter an inspection of the mouth, solely by the eye, the operation becoming difficult in view of the fact that the wax must be soltened by heat in order that it may be properly moided. Loss oftime and trouble are thus experienced in fitting the flange properly to the mouth, and the patient is subjected to much IIICOUVBUHJICG.
The object ofmy invention is to obviate these objections incident to the use of a posterior flange of wax upon a dental impression-cup; and it consists in combining with the cup a flexible flange, of rubber or other elastic material, formed to approximate the shape of the root of the mouth to which it is to be fitted, and which, when secured to the cup and inserted in place, shall, because of its flexible, yielding nature, adaptitself to the roof without unpleasant effect. My invention admits of the use, with the same cup,of a set of interchange able flanges adapted to various conformations, so that the one cup may be thereby made ready upon the instant for use in many different operations.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in the perspective of an ordinary metallic dental impression-cup adapted for an attachment thereto ofa flexible posterior flange. Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of my flexible rubber flange adapted to be secured to the cup, and Fig. 3 is an end view of the cup with the flange attached.
The cup A, Fig. 1, is of the usual form, ma-
(No model.)
terial, and proportions, and is inflexible. It is provided near to its reared ge with three eyes, I) b b. The central eye is formed with a slotleadiug out therefrom toward the outer edge. The lateral eyes have slots leading therefrom toward the central eye. The flange B is made of soft elastic rubber, or equivalent elastic flexible material, having a comparatively wide base and a thin upper edge, which is mounted to conform substantially to the form of the posterior portion of the roof of the mouth, the base being made to fit accurately upon the face of the rear end of the cup. The underside of the base is fitted with studs 00, firmly secured thereto, having flanged heads adapted to enter the eyes I) in the cup, and slender shanks adapted to pass into the slots of the eyes, and the flange is secured to the cup by inserting the studs in the eyes, the elasticity ofthe flange serving to draw the studs into the slots, so that the heads shall lock therewith, and thus effectually fasten the two together. I contemplate the use of a number of these flexible flanges with each size ofcnp, each of the flanges in a set having the same form and configuration of base and studs,so as to be interchangeable on the cup, but with a modified form of upper edge, to adapt it to a special type of mouth.
I do not limit myself to the mode of fastening the flange to the cup herein described, as
various fastening devices may be employed,
and in some cases the flange may be permanently secured to the cup.
lam aware that dental impression-cups have been madethroughout ofsot't rubber; but a cup thus made wholly elastic and flexible is objectionable because of its instability, and is not only expensive in itself, but necessitates the provision of as many cups as there are modifications in the shape of the mouth-defects and objections which are obviated in my invention.
I claim as my invention- The combination, with an inflexible dental impression-cup, of aseparate elastic and flexible posterior flange secured thereto substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SIDELL E. FISH.
