It is known that in dump buckets, whe'therggravityoperated or of the kind wherein an impulse is applied to the bucket atthe beginning of the dumping movement, it is necessary, in order to tilt the bucketand then restore it to its loading position, to deal with several different operations which may even compel the operator to move about.
The" object 'of this invention is to'proyide a special contr'ol device whereby the operator, without changing his place or moving about, may unla'tch the bucket and, if need be, apply to it the impulse required for dumping the contents thereof by merely operating a single control lever, while the reverse operation of this lever will restore the bucket to its loading and latched position.
The affixed drawing forming part of this specification illustrates diagrammatically by way of example one embodiment of the invention. The single figure of the drawing shows a vertical longitudinal section of a scoop dump car provided with the device according to the invention.
The car assembly comprises a frame or undercarriage 2 carrying a tilting body scoop or bucket 1. The frame 2 may be the chassis or frame of a self-propelled carrier, e. g. a power truck, a trailer, a self-propelled, hauled or direct-impelled car, etc. or still a fixed frame as in the case of relay or shifting loading buckets.
The body may be dumped forward either by rolling on the frame 2, by pivoting about a fixed fulcrum on the frame or through a rolling movement on the frame combined with a tilting movement about a given fixed point thereof (which is the case illustrated in the figure).
The device according to the invention comprises:
A pair of arms 3, 4. The arm 3 has one end pivoted to the frame at 5 and the other end pivotally mounted on one end of the other arm 4 through a pin 7, the other or free end of arm 4 being fulcrumed through a pin 6 to the body 1.
A coupling rod 8 having one end fulcrumed at a suitable point 9 on the arm 3 and the other end formed with a slot 10 in which a pin 11 fast with a control lever 12 is slidably engaged providing a lost motion connection between the control lever 12 and the coupling rod 8. The control lever 12 is fulcrumed at 13 to the frame 2.
A latch member 14 pivoted through a pin 15 to the frame 2, and designed to engage a suitably shaped catch lug 16 formed on the body.
A tension spring 17 constantly urging the latch member 14 to the position in which it retains the body through the catch lug 16 thereof.
A connecting rod 18 having its front end pivotally attached to a pin 19 secured on a heel portion of the latch 14 is formed at its rear end with a slot or elongated hole 20 having slidably mounted therein a pin 21 rigid with the lever 12, at a point thereof intermediate the fulcrum 13 and the pin 11, the distance from the front end of this slot 20 to the pin 21 subtending a smaller angle than that from the front end of slot 10 to the relevant pin 11.
2,738,223 Patented Mar. 13, 1956 2 when the bucket 1 bears in its normal, load-carrying position upon the frame 2, asshowu in thick lines in the drawing, the dumping thereof is controlled by pushing forwards the control lever 12. As this lever rotates about its fulcrum 13, the pin 21 engages the front endof the relevant slot 20 well before thepin 11 contacts the front end of slot 10. Under these conditions, in 21 alone is operative and through thefconnecting rod 18 causes the latch 14 to'rota'te counterclockwise about its fulcrum pin 15 while-tensioning thereturmsp'ring 17, thereby causing the latch headto release the catch ing 16. Toraise the bucket antirestore it to its initial position 'on the frame, as shown at 1 in the drawing, it will be sufficient to pull the control lever 12. Then the pin '11 'en'gag'e's'the rear end of slot 10 and moves the rod 8' to the left, so that the pivotal connections 6 between the link 4 and bucket' 1 will "be pulled in turn" by the link 3' pivotally attached at 7, thereby raising the bucket, this motion being determined lry the control lever 12 until the catch lug 16 is relatively close to the head of latch 14. Then the bucket, linkage 3-7 and connecting-rod 8 are positioned as at the moment in which the head of latch 14 was disengaged from the catch lug 16 in the reverse operation. However, the lever 12 is not in the same position, since the pin 11 still engages the rear end of slot 10 instead of engaging the front end thereof, as in the reverse or dumping movement. Therefore, the position occupied by this lever 12 is somewhat backwards of that just described for the purpose of comparison, and besides the lower connecting-rod 18 is also positioned more at the rear as it is pulled rearwardly and has the front end of its slot 20 urged by the spring 17 against the pin 21 secured on the control lever 12, the head of latch 14 being more advanced. Therefore, this head, instead of being free at the same moment is positioned where it may engage the catch lug 16. From this moment on, as the pulling of control lever 12 is continued, the bucket resumes automatically its initial position 1 by gravity, the rear portion of its bottom resting upon the frame 2. During this last portion of the raising movement the lug 16 bears on the head of latch 14 and pushes same to therear or counterclockwise against the resistance of the return spring 17, the connecting-rod 18 following without any resistance this forward movement of the heel portion of the latch 14 to which this rod is attached at 19, the pin 21 sliding along the slot 20 so as to permit this movement. This last phase of the movement occurs very quickly and is stopped abruptly by the engagement of the bucket bottom against the frame 2, without however occasioning any reaction on the control lever. As a matter of fact, this last portion of the return movement just described takes place independently of the control lever 12, the connecting-rod 8 following freely the bucket movement as the edges of its slot 10 are in sliding engagement with the pin 11.
It will be readily understood by those conversant with the art that various modifications may be brought to this single-lever control device shown only in a diagrammatical manner in the drawing. Thus, considerable differences may be had from one embodiment to another, according to the sizes of the body and/or frame, the kind of material which it is intended to carry and the type of truck or frame used.
Moreover, the latching may be carried out in various manners. Of course, these and other similar alterations may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
What I claim is: v
1. A dump wagon comprising a frame, a dump body pivotally mounted on said frame and having a hauling and a dumping position, a latch member on said frame for engaging said dump body when said dump body is in its hauling position, control lever mounted on said frame, a coupling rod connecting said control lever and said latch member, a series of articulated members connected between said frame and dump body and angularly disposed with respect to each other, a second coupling rod connected between said control lever and said articulated members for tilting the dump body when the control lever is actuated to position said articulated members in substantially linear relationship and to cause said coupling rod to disengage the latch member, a first lost motion connection between the control lever and the first coupling rod for permitting the engagement of the dump body by the latch member when said body is operated by said control lever and approaches its hauling position, and a lost motion connection between the second coupling rod and said control lever and having greater play than said first lost motion connection for delaying the tilting of the body to its dumping position until the latch member has been disengaged by the coupling rod.
2. A dump wagon comprising a frame, a dump body pivotally mounted on said frame and having a hauling and a dumping position, a toggle lever connecting said dump body with said frame, a latch member on said frame for engaging said dump body when said dump body is in its hauling position, a control lever mounted on said frame, a coupling rod connecting said control lever and said latch member, a link member connected at one end with the toggle lever and at the other end with a control lever for tilting the dump body when the control lever is actuated in the direction to straighten said toggle and disengage the latch member, one of the connections of the coupling rod being provided with a first lost motion connection for permitting the engagement of the dump body by the latch member when said body is operated by said control lever and said coupling rod approaches its hauling position, and one of the connections of the link member being provided with a second lost motion connection having greater play than said first lost motion connection for delaying the tilting of the body to its dumping position until the latch member is disengaged by the coupling rod.
