BUNG FOR BARRELS. No. 273,788. Patented Mar. 13,1883.

UNIT D STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY WERLE, OF STERLING, ILLINOIS.
BUNG FOR BARRELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 273,788, dated March 13, 1883.
Application filed January 29, 1883.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY WERLE, a citizen of the'United States of America, residing at Sterling, in the county of Whiteside and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bungs for Barrels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of barrelbungs which are made of metal, and are used generally for a temporary purpose.
In the drawings the figure is a longitudinal sectional View embodying my invention.
A is a hung, made ofany desired metal, consisting of the solid head a, walls I) b, and recess c, and tapered gradually through its entire length. The walls I) b may be of any desired thickness; but I find by actual experience that about one-quarter of an inch at the top of the recess a, tapering to three-sixteenths of an inch at the lower edge of the bung, operates most satisfactorily. The walls I) b are cast integral with the head a, the latter of which I make aboutone-half inch in longitudinal thickness. In the use of the bung, owing to the weight of the head a, and the hollow recess 0 and the outside taper of the walls I) b, coming in contact only with the upper edge of the bung-hole of the barrel, while performing (N0 model.)
the functions of a safe and effective temporary hung, it is easily removed by the thumb and finger or a light tap upon the upper edge of the bung.
Heretofore, in order to remove the ordinary bung, it has been necessary to use a hammer or mallet and pound the stave containing the hung-hole on each side of the bung, and, as barrels and casks are frequently used a great many times, this frequent pounding of the stave breaks it, and thus ruins an otherwise good barrel. In a great manyinstances it has been found that even pounding would not loosen the bung, and the same has had to be out out with a chisel, which, however carefully done, will break down the walls of the bung-hole, and thus ruin the barrel.
My invention is of especial value in cases where barrels are filled and are subsequently to be opened for gaging or regaging or other purposes. It is durable, and in no case can injury result to the cask in its removal, and the hung may be used an indefinite number of times.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patentof the United States, is
The metallic bung A, having the head a, walls b b, and recess 0, all substantially as and for the uses and purposes described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY WERLE. Witnesses:
