UNITED STATE-s PATENT OFFICE.
EUGENE MASSIOOT, OF New ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
ATTAOHM ENT FOR VSIEWING-MACHIN E-S.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 273,571, dated March 6, 1883.
k Application filed August 2, 1882. (No model.)
lowing to be afull, clear, and correct description of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings,-making a part of this specification. v
My invention relates to an attachment for sewing-machines,whereby the same may be operated either by hand or foot power, or by hand and foot power combined, as the operator may elect.
It consists of a table-clamp having a lever pivoted in the outer end thereof, and the lower end of the said lever connected by a rod with the crank-pin ot' the fly-wheel or driving-shaft, the said rod having an extension be 0nd the aforesaid pin and an ofi'set in the said extension, the oifset provided with a projecting pin, to which the pedal-connecting rod can be attached when desired. 4
On the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical cross-section of asewinganachine table and stand with my improvement thereto attached, and Fig. 2 a top view of the fly-Wheel with my hand-lever-connccting rod secured to the crank-pin thereof.
The letter A designates the table-top of an ordinary sewing-machine, and B one of the stands thereof.
C is the fly-wheel, and d the pin or shaft on which it operates.
The letter E designates the crank-pin, to which thepedal-connecting rod fis usually attached. I
My invention consists of a clamp,'G, having a set screw, h, for securing it to the iront of the table, as shown. The said clamp is provided with an outwardly-projecting arm, to
I which is pinned a hand-lever, K, the lower end of the latter connected by a rod, L, with the'crank-pin E. That portion of the rod L which projects beyond the aforesaid crankpin' has an offset made therein, as at m, and the extremity of this part is provided with a projecting pin, it, to which the upper end of the pedal-connecting rod can be connected, so as to operate the same transverse line as the crank-pin E and its rod f.
Where it. is possible to change the position of the lower or pedal bearing, n, the offset in the lever L can be dispensed with. Its only object is to provide forthe connecting of the pedal-rod thereto without changing the position of the pedal.
Having described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- Y 1. A sewing-machine attachment consisting of a clamp, G, pivoted lever, K, and rod L, the latter adapted to connect with thedriving-crank of the machine, and having an extension beyond the said crank-bearing, to
which the pedalconnecting rod can be attached whenever desired, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a hand-operating attachment for sewing-machines. a connecting-rod, L, having an extension beyond its crank-bearing, said extension having an offset therein, the extremily of whichis provided with a projecting pin,
n. to which the treadle-connecting rod can be connected without changing the position of the treadle, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth. a
In testimony whereof I hereunto sign my name.
EUGENE MASSIOOT. In presence of- J. N. MILLER, J. (J. HUBBELL.
