AWNING. No. 73,503. Patented Mar. 6; 1883..

UNITED STATES PAT NT OFFICE.
WILLIAM FREELAND, OFBROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
AWNING.
SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 273,503, dated March 6, 1883.
Application filed January 11, 1583. (No model.) 1 i To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM FREELAND, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in'AWnings, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide an awning having such construction that all accumulation of water upon it after a rain or thaw will be prevented; and to this end my invention consists in forming the awning with suitable holes, and providing it upon the under side, underthe holes, with suitable troughs or conductors for carrying off the water and emptying it into the gutter of the street.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing my new and improved awning. Fig.2 is a sectional elevation of the same, taken longitudinally through one of the troughs or conductors; and Fig. 3 is a similar view taken transverse to one of the troughs or conductors.
The main portion of the awning A is of canvas and of the ordinary construction, except that it is formed with a suitable number of small holes, a a.
B B are the troughs or conductors. These In this manner it will be seen that the awn- 7 ing is relieved of the weight and destroying effect of the water, and that all annoyance to passers=by caused by the dripping down of the water is avoided. Besides, the troughs or conductors are of small expense, perfectly effectual for their purpose, and do not in any manner interfere with the rolling up or unrolling of the awning, and require no attention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The awning A, formed with the holes a, in combination with the troughs B,secured to the awnings under the openings, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
WILLIAM FREELAND.
