, UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES L. PERRY, OF BERLIN, WISCONSIN.
ABRADING CUTTER-HEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 273,304, dated March 6, 1883.
Application filed December 12. 1882. (N0 model.)
Be it known that 1, JAMES L. PERRY, of Berlin, in the county of Green Lake, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rotary Gutters 0r Abraders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to abrading-heads for wood-polishing machines, and will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a butt-edge view of one of the plates that compose my abradinghead. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the abradin g-head complete.
A are the journals. B is a square metal backing, which forms the stock and O are the abrading-plates, each of which is finely serrated on one side, as at a, and on the other side is beveled, as at a, the bevel terminating in the serrations to form the abrading-edge. The plates are also slot-ted, as at b, to take screw-bolts b, by which they are adjustably secured to the stock. I make the serrations very fine, and the slots 1) wider than the diameter of the bolts, so that the plates may be capable of slightlongitudinal adjustment; and then I am able to so adjust the plates with relation to each other that the serrations on one will break joints with those on the plate that follows it--that is, the cutting-points on one plate will take into the wood between the cuts made by the points on the plate which it follows, and the action of the plates will be like that of sand-paper; but this action will be more positive in its character than that of sand-paper.
My plates may be sharpened by grinding their beveled surface, and they can be reground until they have been reduced to one-half their original width.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a revolving cutterhead stock, of knives, as 0, having fine serrations so arranged as to alternate or break joints with each other, substantially as set forth.
2. In combination with a revolving cutterhead, a knife havinga serrated cutting-edge and face-bearin g on the cutter-head stock, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing 1 have hereunto set my hand, on this 14th day of November, 1882, in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES L. PERRY.
