UNITED STATES PATENT QFETCE.
W'ILLIAM SHAW, OF PARIS, KENTUCKY.
GRAIN-CLEANING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 272,782, dated February 20, 1883.
Application filed November 6, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM SHAW, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Paris, in the county of Bourbon and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Grain-Cleaning Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in means for cleaning grain and separating the impurities therefrom by permitting the grain to descend through a pipe or flue upon the periphery of a wheel provided with wings or buckets, which wheel is provided with a shaft and pulley, and is connected by suitable mechanical means with a suction-fan located in a spout which adjoins the grain-flue for the purpose of creating a draft which will carry oh" the refuse or impurities from the grain and force them outside of the building.
My invention consists in a ware or store house or granary having a vertical opening or flue, which is connected with the separate stories, and in locating within said line a wheel upon the periphery of which the grain falls, said vertical line being provided with an opening or line which is connected with a suction-fan.
My invention also consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my grain-cleaning apparatus, showing the parts disconnected or removed from the building. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a warehouse or granary, showing my invention applied thereto.
In the annexed drawings, A represents a vertical line or opening, which may extend from the upper story of a building to the ground-floor. The floors of this building adjacent to the flue are provided with raised portions a, which will afford an-easy means for feeding the grain to the aforesaid flue; or the floors may be built so as toincline toward this flue. The grain, when it descends, falls upon the periphery of the wheel B, so as to cause it, by the force of gravity which is utilized, to clean the grain, which cleaning is accomplished by a suction-fan, G, which is connected to the wheel .B by suitable mechanical means, a simple way being by a belt, as showna The flue A, below the fan, is connected with the flue D, which is at right angles with the same. Adjacent to and parallel with thisflue D is another flue, E, which is separated from the aforesaid flue by a partition, the inner wall of which is perforated or otherwise connected with the horizontal flue D. Within this flue E is located the suction-fan. By these means the grain, as it descends, causes the driving wheel or pulley on the wheel B to rotate, which pulley is connected by means of a belt, as.
shown in Fig. 2, to the fan 0 for the purpose of creating a draft, which will draw the impurities from the grain and discharge them at the end of the line E.
In the annexed drawings I have shown one way of carrying out my invention, though it is evident that as to the mechanical details 'they may be varied according to the locality and the arrangement of the lines in the building in which it is desired to use the invention, the main object of my invention being to utilize the power which can be gained by the descent of the grain to operate suitable mechanism to produce a suction which will draw and discharge the lighter impurities from the grain in its descent.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a building or warehouse, the combination, with a vertical and a horizontal line, of a wheel located within the vertical fine and a draft-fan located in the horizontal flue, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a grain-cleaning apparatus, the combination, with a vertical line or chute, A,having openings for the supply of grain, as shown, of the wheel B, having its periphery in said chute, flues D and E, and suction-fan O, the parts being organized substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM SHAW.
