3 Claims. ((1242-55) This invention relates to improvements in winding reels and more particularly relates to a winding reel adapted to wind in mattress borders as they leave the sewing machine performing a series of stitching operations thereon.
A principal object of my invention is to provide a simple and improved form ofmattress border winding reel arranged with a view toward utmost simplicity and efiieiency in construction and operation.
A further and important object of my invention is to provide a novel and improved form of mattress border winding reel so arranged as to efiiciently wi'nd' in a mattress border from the discharge end of a stitching machine, intermittently performing a series of stitching operations thereon, and accommodating stopping of the Winding operation during cross stitching of the border.
Another object of my invention is to provide a novel and improved form of mattress border winding reel arranged to efficiently coil mattress borders at the end of the stitching operation thereof so constructed and arranged as toaccommOdate'the; coiled borderto be readily removed from the end of the winding reel.
A further and more detailed object of my invention is to provide a mattress border-winding reel utilizing an open reel provided with a single upright flange inclined with respect to the vertical, so as to accommodate a border to rest against the flange and be wound on the reel without the useof a retaining flange, and to permitready removal of the coiled border from the open end of the reel.
Another and more detailed object of my invention is to provide a winding reel particularly adapted to wind in mattress borders at the completion of the cross-stitching operation thereof having a rotatable hub upon which the mattress border is wound and a flange extending from one end of the hub, wherein the flange and hub are inclined to support the border during the coiling operation and wherein the flange rests against a power, driven friction disk afiording a driveforthe reel at the end of the stitching operations on the border, and accommodating the reel to slip during crossstitching thereof.
A still further object of my invention is to. provide a mattress border winding reel independently winding mattress borders as they come from'a stitching machine, and including two inclined disksagainst which the borders rest during the winding operation thereof and oppositely facing continuously driven friction. disks. ofiset from the centers of rotation. of. the inclined flanges and having drive surfaces at the angles of inclination of the flanges.
These and other objects of my invention will appear from time to time as the following specification proceeds and with reference to the accompanying drawings wherem: a

In the embodiment of my invention illustrated in the drawings, I have shown a frame having two oppositely facing open reels 11, 11 journaled thereon. for rotation about axes inclined. upwardly with respect to the horizontal, to accommodate the reels to readily Wind in and support a mattress border by the use of one flange only, and to enable the mattress borders to be. readily removed from the ends of the reels.
The frame 10 is shown as being of an inverted generally U-shaped form having a top piece 12 and parallel legs 13, 13 having oppositely facing outwardly extending feet 14, 14, which may be secured to. the floor or a suitable base, if desired.
A shelf 15 is shown as extending between the legs13, 13 and as being secured thereto. The. shelf. 15 forms a support for a motor 16. As shown herein, the motor 16 has av motor shaft 17 with. a worm 18 thereon meshing with and driving a worm gear 19, on a transverse shaft 20, journaled at its ends in bearing brackets 21, 21 depending from the cross frame member 12 and secured thereto. A sprocket 23 is shown as being Secured to the shaft 24 and as driving a vertically spaced sprocket 24, secured to a transverse shaft 25 spaced above the frame member 12. A chain 26 connects the sprockets 23 and 24 in driving relation with respect to each other. The transverse shaft 25 is shown as being journaled in spaced bearing supports 27, 27 projecting upwardly from a standard 28 secured to the top 12 of theframe 10. Friction disks 29, 29 are shown as being. secured to opposite ends of the transverse shaft25. and as. being rotatably driven therefrom.
As herein shown, the friction. disks 29, 29. have. relatively flat angled conical friction drive, faces 39, 30, the angle of the drive surface disposed above the axis of the shaft 25 conforming to the angle of aflange 31. of the reel 11, so as to frictionally drive the same as said flange bears. against said conical surface. The friction drive faces 30, 30 of the friction disks 29, 29, may have a suitable friction material thereon, to afford a relatively high coefiicient of friction between the flanges 31, 31 and said friction drive faces, sufiicient to frictionally drive the reels 11, 11, to Wind a mattress border thereon, and accommodate said friction drive faces to slip. during the intermittent cross stitching of the border.
The standard 28 is shown as having support bosses 33 at its lower end portion just. above the base thereof andv projecting outwardly therefrom. The bosses 33, 33 are shown as being bored or drilled at angles perpendicular to the angles of the flanges 31, 31 and as having shafts- 35, 35 secured thereto and extending outwardly therefrom upon which the reels 11, 11 are journaled.
The shafts 35, 35 are shown as having hubs 36,. 36 of. the reels 11, 11 journaled thereon for rotation with respect thereto. The flanges 31-, 31 may be secured to ghe inner sides of the hubs 36, 36 as by. machine screws The hubs 36, 36 and reels ii, 11 are retained to the shafts 35', 35 as by collars 39, 39 secured to the ends thereof by machine screws 40, 40. It should herebe notedthat clearance is provided? between. the ends of the hubs and the collars 39, 39 and that, clearance is alsov providedbetween the outer ends of the bosses 33, 33 and the flanges 31, 31, to accommodate limitedv movement of the hubs 36, 36 along the shafts 35, 35, so a greater part of the weight of the reels. 11, 11 will. rest against the conical friction drive surfaces 31 30 of the friction disks 29, 23, to rotatably drive said reels with an increasing frictional resistance as the mattress border is wound on the reel and the winding load increases.
The mattress border is shown as being retained to vthe hub 36, to be wound thereon, by a retainer rod 43. A
retainer rod 43 is provided for each reel 11 and is shown as being secured to the flange 31 as by nuts 44, 44 and as being spaced from the hub 36, a distance sufficient to enable the mattress border .to be inserted between said hub and bar preferably along a transversely stitched portion of the borderat the leading end thereof, and to press the border to the hub 36.
As a plurality of mattress borders are usually stitched on the stitching machine (not shown), the free ends of the borders depending from the machine, may be inserted between the hubs 36, 36 and the retainer rods 43, 43 along transverse stitched portions of the border. The motor 16 being in operation, the reels 11, 11 are 7 both driven simultaneously so as to wind in two borders,
it being understood that mattress border stitching machines usually stitch a plurality of borders simultaneously and that the border winding reel is located between two sewing heads of the stitching machine, so two borders may be wound on the reel independently of each other.
When it is desired to stop a reel to attach a border thereto, it is simply necessary to grasp the rim of a flange 31 by the hand, and hold it from rotation during insertion of a border between the retainer bar 43 and hub 36, and then let go of the flange, at which timethe respective friction drive face 30 will pick up and rotatably drive its associated reel.
It should here be understood that whenever a border is transversely stitched or stitched with a design extending thereacross that feeding movement of the border 'the flange 31, but offering sulficient frictional resistance against said flange to immediately pick up the reel and continue winding the border as soon as the transverse stitching operation is completed and the border is fed from the stitching machine.
' It should further be understood that as the border is coiled on a reel 11, that the weight against the friction drive face 30 is increased with a resultant increase in the frictional resistance between the flange 31 and friction drive face 30, assuring a tightly coiled border.
It may thus be seen that a simplified form of mattress border winding reel has been provided for association with a border stitching machine, having only one flange for each border winding reel and accommodating the stitched border to readily be inserted on the reel in a simple operation, and to be slipped from the end of the reel.
It may still further be seen that the drive is such that the reels may be disposed at angles upwardly in- 4 and accommodating the intermittent winding of a mattress border on said reel while said drive member continues to rotate, and a retainer extending from said flange in parallel to relation with respect to said hub and spaced therefrom a distance suflicient to pressingly engage the leading end of the border with said hub and effect coiling border, a frame having a shaft extending outwardly therefrom and inclined upwardly from said frame at a relatively flat angle with respect to the horizontal, a friction disk journaled on said frame above said shaft, a motor for driving said disk, a reel freely mounted on said shaft for slidable movement downwardly therealong toward said disk, said reel having a hub freely, rotatable on said shaft and having a flange extending from the inner end of said hub perpendicular to the axis of said shaft, and said friction disk having a flat angled conical friction drive surface at the angle of said flange and engaged by said flange by gravity and the weight of the border wound on said reel, and the drive between said fric tion disk and flange maintaining tension on the border and slipping during a stitching operation of the border and affording increased frictional drive engagement with said flange by the increase in weight of the border as it is coiled thereon.

In a mattress border winding reel, a frame, a plurality of aligned shafts secured to said frame and projecting outwardly therefrom in opposite directions at upwardly inclined relativelyflat angles with respect to the horizontal, a reel freely rotatable on each of said shafts and slidable downwardly therealong by gravity, said reels each having a hub rotatably and slidably journaled on 7 an associated shaft and having a flange extending radially from the inner end of said hub perpendicular to the axis thereof and also having a retainer rod projecting from said flange in parallel relation with respect to said hub, and spaced from said hub a distance suflicient to press against a border inserted between said hub and retainer rod to effect winding of a border on said reel upon rotation thereof, and means for driving said reels clined with respect to the vertical, and that the weight It will be understood that modifications and variations may be effected without departing from the scope of the novel concepts of the present invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a mattress border Winding reel, a frame, a reel at one side of said frame mounted on said frame for rotation about an axis inclined upwardly with respect to the horizontal at a relatively flat angle and including a hub having .a single flange extending from the inner end of said hub, a motor on said frame, a friction drive member continuously driven by said motor and having a drive face extending parallel to the plane of said reel and engaged by said reel by gravity for driving the same,
and accommodating either reel to be stopped and maintain tension on the border during a stitching operation comprising a common transverse shaft having a friction disk on each end thereof, amotor for simultaneously driving said disks, each of said disks having a conical drive surface inclined to extend parallel to the plane of a flange of an associated reel and engaged by said flange and supporting a greater part of the weight of the associated reel and offering suflicient frictional resistance against the associated disk to afford a slipping drive between the associated disk and flange, slipping during a stitching operation or during the insertion or removal of a border from an associated reel and Winding the border on the reel upon a release of tension thereon.
