UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
DINSMORE AUSTIN, OF DENISON, IOWA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO l HENRY-C. LAUB, OF SAME PLACE.
ATTACHMENT TO WINDMILLS, SLC.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 272,618, dated Februaryo, 1883.
' Appiication flied January 13. i883. (Model.)
To all whom t may concern: Be it known that I, DINsMoRE AUSTIN, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Denison, in the county of Crawford and State of lowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Windmills, Sto.; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ot' the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a pai-t of this specification, and to the letters aiid figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 ot the drawings is a side elevation of my invention; and Fig. 2, a 'similar view, showing its operation. t
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in mechanical movements for attachment to'windmills, foot-powers, harveslers, &c., l'or the purpose of obtaining a continuous rotary motion unimpeded by deadcenters; and the invention consists ot` an arm provided at its lower ends with wrist-piiis engaging with a cam shaped opening in a driving-wheel, said wrist-pins being placed obliquely to each other, and following` the line of contour of .the cani-shaped opening in opposite directions, their action being controlled by a suitable springlatch upon the face ot' the driving-wheel, the upper end of the arm being connected with a lever, which in turn coitiiects with tlte pitinan-rod of the windmill or other power to operate the whole, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
ln the accompanying drawings, A represents the pitman-rod of a windmill or other power, having connected thereto tlte slotted end of alever, B. T o the other end of this lever is connected an artii, C, having at its lower end wrist-pins a b, placed obliquely to each other, and engaging with a cani-shaped opening in a driving-wheel, D. As motion is imparted to the arm C through the medium ot' the lever and pitman-rod connecting with the windmill or other power, the wrist-pins a l) follow the line of cotitour of the cani-shaped opening inthe driving-wheel D in a direction opposite to each other, each pin in its turn coming in contact with the inclined shoulder c of a spring-latch, E, by which it is prevented from slipping back, aiid compelled to move forward until released by the raising of said latch as the other piti comes in contact therewith, as shown by dotted lines, Fig. 2, there` by avoiding any stoppage on a dead center, but giving a continuous rotary motion to the driving-wheel D and the belt-pulley F, attached to its shaft for the purpose ot' connection with operative machinery.
Having now fully described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is-
1. The arm O,having its lower end provided with wristvpins a I), placed obliqnely to each other, and its upper end coiitiected to a lever, B, in turn connecting with the pittnaii-rod ot' a windmill or other power, the said wrist-pins engaging with and t'ollowingthe line ofcontour of a. cam-shaped opening in adriving-wheel, D, and their action controlled by means ot a suitable spiiiig-latch, E, substantially as shown, and t'or the purpose described.
2. The arm C, having at its lower end Wristpins ct b, engaging with a cam-shaped opening in a drivitig-\vheel, D,in combination with the lever B, pitinan-rod A, and springlatch E, substantially as and for the ptirpose set forth.
3. The driving-wheel D, provided with a cani-shaped openiitg and a spring-latch, E, in coinb nation with an arm,'O,havingwristpins ab, and the lever B, adapted to connect with the pitman-rod of a windmill or other power, substantially as and for the purpose speciiied.
4. The lever B, adapted to connect with the pittnan-rod ota windmill or other power, in'
combination with the arm O, provided at its lower eiid with wrist-pins a b, engaging with a cam-shaped opening in the driving-wheel D, and the spring-latch E, having an inclined shoulder, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
ln testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
