5 Claims. (CI. 78-60) The present invention relates to a forging apparatus, and an object thereof is to generally improve the construction of such mechanism.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein a satisfactory embodiment of the invention is shown. However, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the details disclosed but includes all such variations and modifications as fall within the spirit of the invention as herein expressed.
The drawing shows a vertical axial sectional view of an illustrative embodiment of the invention.
The invention may be best understood in a preliminary way by a consideration of applicants co-pending application, Serial No. 590,896, filed April 28, 1945, now Patent No. 2,545,229, dated March 13, 1951. The billets which are to be forged are heated in a furnace, partially pointed and have one end cleaned of scale by fluid treatment as will appear.
A set of dies is provided and which has a bracket por tion 57 supporting a die 58 which is provided with a cavity 59, as seen in the drawing. Pressure of a ram, not shown against one end of billet H will force the other end of billet H into die 58. Bracket 57 is supported against movement and the pressure accordingly presses billet H into the cavity 59 of die 58. This action bevels the end of the billet and the pressure also upsets the billet or causes it to swell somewhat with a corresponding reduction of its length. This upsetting or swelling causes most or all of the accumulation of scale, which is brittle, to break and fall oil the billet. The ram is then retracted whereupon the billet is unseated from die 58 by means of a fluid pressed cylinder 65a.
Above mentioned cylinder 65a comprises a cap-like member reciprocably fitted in a fluid-tight manner on a stationary piston 87 fixed in relation to bracket 57. Piston 87 is hollow and connected by means of a passageway 88 with a source of fluid under pressure, represented by a flexible connection 89. A valve 90 disposed within piston 87 is seated about an outlet port 91 and has a stem 92 fixed with cylinder 65a. Cylinder 65a extends slightly beyond a position flush with the face of die 58. As will be seen, pressure in passageway 88 will tend to continuously maintain cylinder 65a as far as possible to the left as seen in the drawing, valve 90 closing port 91 and relieving the fluid tight joint between cylinder 65a and piston 87 of pressure except when actually working. It is to be understood that the pressure of billet H into die 59 is substantially in excess of the pressure of cylinder 65a so that cylinder 65a is forced to the right causing opening of port 91 whenever a billet is pressed into die 58. A,
plurality of perforations 93 extend through cylinder 65a so as to expose the end of billet H to fluid under pressure from the interior of cylinder 65a. This fluid, commonly cold water, immediately disintegrates and washes away scale on the end of billet H. However, the water is so small in amount and the duration of the flow is so short that no material cooling of the billet is effected. The clearing of this end of the billet of scale is important since it is this end which will be exposed to a piercing punch during a subsequent operation.
The. above being a complete description of an illustrative embodiment of the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States is: v
1. In a billet pointing device includinga die for receiving an end of a billet and'means for pressing said billet into saiddie, the combination of a pressure fluid actuated ejecting device in said die, means for supplying part of said fluid against said end of said billet for re-' moving scale in preparation for a piercing operation.
2. In a billet pointing device including a die having a cavity adapted to receive the end of a billet to be pointed and advanceable and retractible means for pressing a billet into said cavity, an ejecting device comprising the combination of a reciprocable element projecting into said cavity in position to be encountered by the billet when the latter is pressed therein, expansible chamber means adapted when supplied with fluid under pressure to urge said reciprocable element into billet encountering position, a supply of fluid under pressure, and valve means communicating with said supply of fluid, directly connected with said reciprocable element and actuable by movement of said element in a direction out of said cavity by said billet, to admit fluid to said expansible chamber means to oppose entrance of said billet into said cavity and to eject said billet when the pressing means is retracted.

In a billet pointing device including a die having a cavity adapted to receive the end of a billet to be pointed and advanceable and retractible means for pressing a billet into said cavity, an ejecting device comprising the combination of a reciprocable element projecting into said cavity in position to be encountered by the billet when the latter is pressed therein, expansible chamber means adapted when supplied with fluid under pressure to urge said reciprocable element into billet encountering position, a supply of fluid under pressure, valve means communicating with said supply of fluid and actuable by movement of said element in a direction out of said cavity by said billet, to admit fluid to said expansible chamber means to oppose entrance of said billet into said cavity and to eject said billet when the pressing means is retracted, and means directing a portion of said fluid under pressure against said billet when said fluid is admitted to said expansible chamber means.
4. An ejecting device for a billet pointing die having a cavity into which a billet is pressed by forging pressure, said ejecting device comprising the combination of a stationary hollow piston fixed in relation to said die, a movable cylinder slidably supported on the piston and having a cap-like head portion in one position projecting into the cavity in said die to be contacted by a billet pressed into said cavity, a source of fluid under pressure communicating with said hollow piston, valve means in said piston, a connection from said movable cylinder actuable to open said valve means to provide communication between said hollow piston and said cylinder when said cylinder is pressed by a billet under forging pressure in a direction out of said cavity, and to block such communication when said cylinder is forced by said fluid under pressure a predetermined distance into said cavity for ejecting a billet from said die upon cessation of forging pressure.
5. An ejecting device for a billet pointing die having a cavity into which a billet is pressed by forging pressure,
said ejecting device comprising the combination of a stationary hollow pistori'fixed in relation to said die, a movable cylinder slidably supported on the piston and having a cap-like head portion in one position projecting into the cavity in said dieto be contacted by a billet pressed into said cavity, asource'of fluid'under pressure communicating with said hollow piston, valve'means in said piston, a connection from said movable cylinder actuable to open said valve means to provide communication between said hollow piston and said cylinder when said cylinder is pressed by a billet under forging pressure in a direction out of said cavity, and to block such communication when said cylinder is forced by said fluid under pressure a predetermined distance into said cavity for ejecting a billet from said die upon cessation of forging pressure, said cylinder providing an opening directed against abillet introduced into said cavity and communicating with the interior of said cylinder for discharging pressure fluid against said billet when said valve is open.
