(Cl. lie-263 The invention relates to a glue applicator for applying glue to the end flap or tuck of a carton prior to its entry into the carton. a
While the glue applicator may be used in other relations, it is here illustrated as applied to the carton folding or making machine described and claimedin the following pending applications all of which are in the name of Elbert L. Bivans, one of the present applicants: S. N. 140,073 filed January 23, 1950, for =Box Making Machine, Patent 2,682,209; S. In all of the above applications, a stack of fiat folded cartons is arranged at one end of a horizontal bed, the bottom carton being transferred to a folding station where a hinged plate swings the box to open position, side flap tuckers and end flap tuckers being provided to close the flaps at one end of the box whereupon the box is ejected.
The above applications disclose a camshaft having a series of cams to operate the side flap and end flap tuckers and according to the invention, another cam is added to this shaft to operate the glue applicator in timed relation to the end flap tuckers.
An object of the invention is to provide a glue applicator in the form of an attachment which may be applied to box making machines such as illustrated in the above applications. 1
A further object of the invention is to provide means for adjusting the timing of the glue applicator so that it will deposit the glue at aselected spot, or in a line on the tuck. i j
A further object is to provide a glue applicator which is readily removable from'the box folding machine so that it may be cleaned or repaired.
A further object is to provide means for adjusting the glue applicator relatively to the foldingmechanism, to accommodate cartons of diiferent heights and widths.
A further object is to provide a glue applicator wherein the amount of glue deposited or applied by the applicator is adjustable. More particularly, the invention provides a glue applicator wherein such adjustment can be accomplished either by moving a glue container with respect to its applicator or valve, or by moving the applicator with respect to the casing.
A further object is to provide a glue applicator with means to adjust the stroke of the applicator.
A further object is to provide a glue applicator which does not interfere with the speed of operation of the box making machines disclosed in the above applications, such speed being from 30 to 75 tucked and glued cartons per minute.

Referring to the drawings, the box making machine 1 is provided with the glue applicator 2. The cam shaft 3 corresponds to cam shaft 27 in Fig. 3 of S. N. 343,837 and to the corresponding cam shaft in the other applications noted above. Cam shaft 3 is provided with a cam 4 for operating the glue applicator 2, cam 4 being positioned at the left of cam 81 in Fig. 3 of S. N. 343,837, cam 81 operating rod 84 which operates the primary end flap tucker 74 in Fig. 12 of said application, the corresponding primary end flap tucker being shown in the present case at 5. Said application shows one form of secondary end flap tucker 72 in Fig. 6 and another one at 105 in Fig. 13, the corresponding secondary end flap tucker being shown in the present case at 6. The tuckers 5 and 6 swing about the axis 7 of a hinge block 8 and are operated by cams notshown on shaft 3 as further disclosed in the above applications. Hinge axis 7 herein corresponds to the hinge axis 102 in Figs. 13 and 14 of S. N. 343,837.
The box making machine herein disclosed is the same as the box making machine of the above applications, with the additions and modifications herewith noted. One of these modifications consists in cutting away the central portion of the primary tucker 5 as shown at 9 and in cutting away the central portion of the secondary end flap tucker 6 as shown at 10 to provide an opening through which the valve head end 11 of the applicator rod 12 extends to apply glue to the tuck 13a of flap 13 of the carton, and to prevent damage tothe rod 12 in the event that it should get stuck and not withdrawn prior to the final closing movement of the tuckers 5 and 6.
The glue applicator 2 comprises a container 14 open at its top and having a cover 15. A suitable glue is used, such as water soluble Arabol I. M. D. 15. Rod 12 at its upper end has threads 16 to adjust its position in its sleeve 17, being held by a lock nut 18. Sleeve 17 serves:
as a valve stem and slides in the bearing blocks 19 and 20 on a bracket 21 mounted on the side of container 14 by screws like 22. Spring 23 urges the assembly 16 and 17 upwardly and bears at its upper end on a stop collar 24,
fixed to sleeve 17 and at its lower end on the bearing 20. T
Casing 14 has a bottom wall 25 having an opening therethrough and providing a port as shown at 26. Port 26 is only slightly larger than the valve head 11 and when valve head 11 is extending in port 26 the glue in container 14 cannot run out of port 26. Valve head 11 is reciprocated by cam '4 as follows. Cam 4 has a cam follower 30 on a lever 31 pivoted to a bracket 32 mounted on the frame 43 of the machine by screws like .33. Cam follower 30 is held in contact with cam 4 by a spring 31a on lever 31. The outer end of lever 31 has a connecting rod 34 having a hinge connection 35 at one end of a bell crank 36. The other end of bell crank 36 having a hinge connection 37 with a connecting rod 38. Rod 38 has a hinge connection 39 with a lever 40 having a hinge connection 41,at one end on a post 42 supported by the frame 43 of the machine. The outer end of lever 40 has a bushing 44 which swivels about the axis of rod 40 and a bushing 45 which swivels about an axis at right angles thereto. Bushing 45 has a thread bore 46 for Patented Nov. 22, 1955 a the threads 47 on a rod 48 which positively moves the valve rod 12 up and down, assisting the spring 23 upwardly, in case the valve head 11 should get stuck. Rod 48 has a ball.49 which swivels and laterallyfitsi in the key slot 50 of a block 51. Block 51 is clamped to valve sleeve 17 by-screw 52. Ball 49 hasan undercut 53. whichfits in slot 50. Slot 50-is open at the top and it'is also open at its: rear side 55 so that the container '14 can be removed while leaving the actuating rod 48 inplace. It will be noted that rod 48 is carried by the post 42, independently of the container 14. As rod 4-8 moves up and down, it exerts-someside thrust on block 51 and this is offset by post 56which is bolted to block 51 as shown at 57 and having-a slide bearing fit with the bore '58 in a bushing 59 carried by bracket 21.
Container 14 at one side. thereof has a lug 60 clamped to a horizontal bar 61 by a clamp screw 62. T o stabilize the support, a key 61a on bar 61 fits in a key slot 60a on lug 60. When screw 62v is removed, container 14 can be removed, the slot '50 sliding oflf of ball 49 as above described. Bar 61 slides in the cross slot 63 of a clamp block 64 and the upright bar 65 slides in the upright slot 66. in block, block 64 having end plates 67 and 68, the parts being clamped together by bolts like 69 and 70. Bar 65 at its lower end is bolted to the frame of the machine as shown at 71.
By loosening the bolts like 69 and 70, the container 14 can be moved laterally or vertically as required, for cartons of'diiferent sizes.
Also, as valve head 11 takes a position in space which is-determined by the position of rod 40, independently of container 14, the vertical adjustment of container 14 varies the amount of opening between the valve head 11 and port 26, and hence varies the amount of glue which will run into port 26 when valve head 11 is open. Also the stroke of valve head 11 can be adjusted by turningrod 48 to raise or lowerthe position of ball 49. Also the position. of valve head 11 with respect to port 26 can be adjusted by screwing the applicator rod 12.
Cam 4 rotates clockwise and it has a dwell 72 on it. The roller 30rides to position the valve head 11 in port 26 to close this port as shown in Fig. 6 and prevent glue from flowing through this port. The bell crank 36 reverses the direction of motion, that is a rise on cam 44 corresponds'to downward movement of valve head 11. The portion73 of cam 4 is of smaller radius than the dwell 72 and this portion 73 raises valve head 11 above the top of'port 26 as shown in Fig. 7 so as to allow glue to momentarily flows towards the entrance to this port. The cam-portion 74 is of increasing radius and hence causes the valve rod 11 to descend, the top 75 of this rise corresponding'to the lowest position of valve 11 whenit is protruding beyond the wall 25, as shown in Fig. 8, in position to apply the glue on it to the tuck or flap of the carton. The adjoining cam portion 76is of decreasing radius to meet the dwell 72 and this causes the valve head 11 to ascend into and stop within the port 26. Cam 4 is clamped to a hub 77 by three bolts like 78 which extend through corresponding slots in the hub 77. Cam 4 has a series of spaced holes indicated at 79 for the bolts 78 so that the angular position of cam 4 can be shifted or adjusted with respect to cam shaft 3, to adjust the time in the rotation of shaft 3 when cam 4 performs its cycle of operations above described.
When valve head 11 is opened, glue does not flow out of port 26 but instead the valve head 11 has a coating of glue on it and thus applies the glue to the flap or other object. After valve head 11 applies the glue to the tuck 13a, valve head 11 movesupwardly, tucker 6 moves to upright position to complete the tuck and the inherent resilience of the tuck 13a presses it'against the under side of the adjacent carton panel. Such pressure is sufiicient to glue the parts together. Thereafter, the tuckers 5 and 6 swing down below the bed, and the carton is ejected over the topof the :tuckers 5 and 6 and another carton is fed to the folding and glue applying station as disclosed in the above patents and patent applications, during the dwell 72 of cam 4.
Various modifications may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit of the following claims.
We claim:
1; A glue applicator comprising a container for the glue, said container having a bottom wall having a port therethrough, a valve in said container, said valve having a valve head portion slidably fitting in and through said port and meansfo'r' operating said valve head to a position fitting in and closing said port, to a' position elevated above said port to permit flow over said port, and
to a position extendingthrough said port to expose said valve head with a coating of the glue, said operating means having a driving connection with said valve head for reciprocating, said valve head, a support independent of said container for said operating means, and means for adjusting the elevated position of said container to adjust the maximum open position of said valve head.
2. A glue applicatorcomprising a container for the glue, said container having a bottom wall having a port therethrough, a valve having a head slidably fitting in and through said port, a sleeve on said valve and having a thread connection therewith, a block secured to said sleeve, saidvblock having a lateral opening having an overhang and an operating rod having a ball slidably fitting in'said opening.
