Claims priority, application Denmark November 24, 1949 16 Claims. (Cl. 1825-58) This invention relates to vacuum cleaners. The vacuum cleaner in accordance with the invention is of the kind in which the vacuumand pressure-case is composed of at least three separable parts. The vacuum cleaner in accordance with the invention differs from the vacuum cleaners previously known, the vacuumand pressurecase consisting of three separable parts, in that its filter or filters are secured to a special filter holder having an air passage for each filler vand which filler holder is carried by an intermediate part which forms part of the wall in the vacuumand pressure-case of the vacuum cleaner and which intermediate part can, by means of releasable clamping members be clamped either to the unit-carrying upper part or cover or upper parts or covers, constituting the upper part of the case, or to the dust container constituting the lower part of the case, or to both these parts of the`vacuumand pressure-case of the vacuum cleaner. Said intermediate part which forms part of the wall in the vacuumand pressure-case of the vacuum cleaner entails the advantage that the interme diate part together withthe unit-carrying upper ypart or cover of the vacuum cleaner can be released from the dust-container and assembled with the cover or covers can be placed aside while the dust-container is being emptied. When the intermediate part is secured on the dustcontainer together with the unit-carrying upper part or cover of the vacuum cleaner, the unit-carrying upper part or cover or upper parts or covers can be unlocked and removed from the intermediate part mounted on the dust-container with the result that access will be obtained to the clean side of the filter or filters which can be turned inside out and shaken so that the dust drops down into the dust-container.
More exactly defined, the invention relates to a vacuum cleaner, preferably a transportable vacuum cleaner comprising a vacuumand pressure-case consisting of at least three parts, to wit, at least a unit carrying upper part or a cover and a filter carrying intermediate part and a dust-container, into which the dust-filled airis sucked and where the intermediate part can by releasable clamping means be clamped in part to the upper part or cover Or upper parts r covers carrying the unit or units, in part to the dust-container, While at the same time the intermediate part is in fixed or releasable connection with a filter holder having at least one air passage which is closed with a filter. i'
The invention furthermore relates 'to different details of the vacuum cleaner here referred to.

The reference numeral 1 in Fig. l designates the upper part or cover of the vacuum cleaner, which upper part or cover carries a motorand suction-unit 2 and which, by diagrammatically indicated clamping members 3, is clamped releasably to an intermediate part 4 which forms part of the wall in the outer case of the vacuum cleaner. The intermediate part 4 is, by diagrammatically indicated clamping members 5, releasably clamped to a dust-container 6 with a suction nozzle 7. The filter 8 is entirely or for the most part bag-shaped and can be shaken or turned inside out, and partly encloses the unit 2. The lower part of the intermediate part 4 encloses a filter holder 9 which, in the embodiment shown, is shaped like a ring, and the filter S is at its widest end secured to the hole in said ring so that the filter closes said hole. The filter holder 9 has at or in the vicinity of its outer edge a guiding a flange 10 or a corresponding collar, the outer side of which has the shape of the inside of the lower part of the intermediate part 4, so that the filter holder 9 can. easily be inserted into the intermediate part. Below on the intermediate part 4 and below on the guiding fiange 10 of the filter holder 9, outwardly directed ring flanges 11 and 12 are provided which are enclosed by a ring 13 that is substantially U-shaped in cross section and made of a yieldable material, preferably rubber, which ring 13 serves to assemble the intermediate part 4 and the filter holder 9 while at the same time, when the intermediate part is clamped to the dust-container, it serves to effect a seal between the intermediate part and the dust-container. The filter holder 9, or preferably its guiding liange 10, carries either a guiding ring 14 or a number of guiding legs which serve to guide the intermediate part 4 during its mounting on the dust-container 6. On the filter holder 9 there is provided, along the edge of the hole of the latter, which hole is closed by the filter, an upwardly-directed ring collar 15 to which the widest end of the filter 8 can be secured, e. g. by a clamping ling of metal. The filter 8 tapers downwardly towards the bottom and at its narrow end is closed by means of a closing plate 16 which preferably consists of metal and which preferably has an upwardly-directed collar 17 along its edge to which the lower edge of the filter 8 can be secured. On the upper side of the closing plate 16 a strap or hoop 18, or alternatively a ring, a pin, or a similar member is provided by which the closing plate can be moved up and down when the filter is to be'shaken or turned inside out or both shaken and turned inside out. In order to make room for the hoop 18, a suitable depression 19 is provided in the lower part of the unit 2. Fig. 1 shows that the unit 2 is partly surrounded by the filter 3, the free filter surface of which is comparatively large, the filter being in cross section shaped substantially like an M. The filter holder 9 carries, adjacent the hole that is closed by the filter, a number of upwardlydirected stays 20 which are mounted preferably on the upwardly-directed ring collar 15 and the upper ends of which are secured to a filter supporting ring 21 so that in its operating position the filter 8 is held in distendetl condition, in part by resting on said filter supporting ring 21 and in part by the lower part of the motorand suctionunit resting against the bottom of the filter, and preferably resting on the upper side of the 'closing plate 16 which closes the narrow end of the filter. A suction hose can be coupled to the suction opening or suction nozzle 7 in the dust-container. Correspondingly, there is provided in the upper part or cover 1 a blowing-out opening or blowing-out nozzle (not shown) to which a blowing hose can be coupled. By means of the clamping members in Fig. 1 the intermediate part 4 kis releasably clamped to the dust-container 6 so that the upper part or the cover 1, together with the intermediate part 4, can be released from the dust-container 6 by release of the clamping members 5 and can be placed e. g. on a oor and be supported on the closing plate 16 of the filter or on supporting legs which replace the guiding ring 14, while the dust-coutainer 6 is being emptied. The fact that the unit-carrying upper part 1 together with the intermediate part can be placed as a unit on a floor and be supported on the closing plate 1:6 of the lter is in part due to the fact that the unit 2 rests against the closing plate, and in part to the upwardly-directed stays 20 which keep the filter distended.
in Fig. 2 corresponding parts are designated by the same reference characters used in Fig. 1, and Fig. 2 differs from Fig. 1 only in that the filter holder 9'- and the intermediate part 4 have the outwardly-directed ring anges 11 and 12 positioned in overlying relationship and locked together by the ring 13 which is U-shaped in cross section and is made of a yieldablel material, preferably rubber. The ring 13 in Fig. 2 Serves to form a seal between the intermediate part 4 and the upper part or the cover 1. The guiding ange on the filter holder 9 as shown in Fig. 2 is upwardly-directed and has a shape corresponding to that of the inside of the upper part of the intermediate part 4. The ring collar i5 around the hole in the filter 9 in Fig. 2 is downwardly-directed and the widest end of the filter 8 is secured around the ring collar 15, while the narrow end of the tapering lter shown in Fig. 2 is secured around the upwardly-directed ring collar 17 on the closing plate 16 of the filter. The intermediate part 4 shown in Fig. 2 has at its. bottom end an outwardly-directed ring ange 22 which secures a ring 23 which is substantially U-shaped in cross section and is made of a yieldable material, preferably rubber, which ring forms a seal between the intermediate part 4 and the dust container 6 when these parts are clamped together by the releasable clamping members 5 which are, as was the case with the clamping members 3', only shown diagrammatically in the figure. At the lower part of the intermediate part 4 a guiding ring 14 or a number of guiding legs are secured and serve to guide the intermediate part 4 during its mounting on the dust-container 6. If the clamping members 5' shown in Fig. 2 are released, the unit-carrying upper part and the intermediate part lcan as an assembled whole be placed on a floor in such position that they rest on the closing plate 16 of the filter or on guidingV legs, or alternatively on a broader guiding ring 14, While the dust-container 6' is being empv tied.
In Figs. 3 and 4 corresponding parts are likewise designated by the same reference characters as in Fig. l, and the large-size vacuum cleaner or vacuum cleaner for industrial purposes shown in Figs. 3 and 4 in fact differs from the vacuum cleaner shown in Fig. l only in being constructed with two unit-carrying uppery parts or covers and with two ilters which, as regardsy form and mounting, correspond completely to the iilter 8 shown in Fig. 1. The dust-containery 6 shown in Figs. 3 and 4 must be imagined as having an oval cross section or, alternatively, a substantiallyv rectangular cross section with rounded corners, and the intermediate part 4 and the filter holder 9 are shaped so as' to correspond to they preferably oval cross-section of the dust-container 6. The filter holder 9 is formed substantially in the shape of a plate in which two' large circular holes are provided which have along their edges an upwardly-directed ring-ange 15 to which the widest end of each of the two filters S is secured. The guiding flange 10 on the filter holder 9 is shaped to conform to the shape of the inside of the lower part 4 of the intermediate part 4 and carries either a guiding ring 14 01' a number of guiding legs which serve to guide the intermediate part 4 during its mounting on the dust-container and which may be sufiiciently long or high that they can serve as supports for the intermediate part when the latter is removed from the dust-container. In its preferably plane upper side the intermediate part is provided with two holes in which the unit-carrying upper parts or covers 1 can be placed so that there will be an air-tight seal against the intermediate part, being secured by the releasable clamping members 3 which, in the embodiment shown in the ligure, consist of turnbuckles which are rotatably secured to the upper side of the intermediate part 4. The lters 8 are in the operating position held in distended state in a similar way to that shown in Fig. l, to wit, in part by the lower part of the unit 2 resting against the upper side of the closing plate 16 of the filter, and in part by the filter 8 resting on a. iilter supporting ring 21, which is carried trom the filter holder 9 by a number of upwardly-directed oblique stays 20 secured to the lter holder. When the unitcarrying upper parts or covers 1 are removed from the intermediate part 4, access is obtained to the clean side of the filters 8 so that the filters can he shaken and turned inside out. When the intermediate part 4, with the unit-carrying upper parts 1 mounted on it, is removed from the dust-container, the intermediate part 4 can be placed on a door with the lower edge of the supporting ring 4 resting on the door, while the dust-container is being emptied- Also in Figs. 5 and 6 corresponding parts are designated by the same reference characters as those used in Fig. 1, only the most important details of the construction being, however, provided with reference characters because of the fact, that the vacuum ycleaner shown in Figs. 5 and 6 with two unit-carrying upper parts or covers 1 is constructed practically speaking in a manner similar to that of the large size vacuum cleaner or vacuum cleaner for industrial purposes shown in Figs. 3 and 4. In Figs. 5 and 6 only the upper part ofthe dust-container 6 is shown, the latter being otherwise constructed in accordance with the dust-container structure shown in Figs. 3 and 4. Each of the iilters 8 isv in its operating position held in distended state in part by the lower part of the unit 2 resting against the upper side. of the closing plate 16 of the iilter, and in part by means of a filter supporting ring 21, which in the construction shown in the figure is connected to a number, e. g. four, upwardly-directed rods 24, the lower ends of which are secured to a horizontal frame 25 which is seen from above in Figs. 7 and 8 together with the lter supporting rings 21 carried from it. Figs. 7 and 8 show the upwardly-directed rods 24 in dotted lines and in their actual positions between the supporting rings 2.1 and the frame 25, while for the sake of clearness the rods 24 in Figs. 5 and 6 are shown somewhat displaced from their actual positions, while at the same time the frame 25 in Figs. 5 and 6 is shown somewhat extended at the ends. In connection with the frame 25 there is at least one upwardly-projecting rod 26 which projects upwardly through a corresponding hole in the filter holder 9 and a hole in the intermdiate part 4. The rod 26- can be moved in downward and upward direction so that the frame 25 with the supporting rings 21, and thereby the filters 8, can, bei shaken. The frame 25 shown in Figs. 5 and 6, which is carried in suspended manner, is in its normal position, i. e. in the operation position of the iilters, and is supported by a pressure spring 27 which serves to keep the frame 25 and thereby the filter vsupporting rings 21 in their raised position, so that the filters 8 are kept distended. The pressure spring 27 shown in Fig. 5 is mounted around the rod 26 projecting, upwardly from, the frame 25 in such a way that the lower endl of the spring, 27 rests on the filter holder 9, while its upper end engages an extension v28 or a member provided. on the-rod. 26. Fig. 5
shows that in addition to the spring 27, or as a substitute for said spring, another pressure spring 29, maybe provided between the upper side of the intermediate part 4 and an extension 30 which is preferably spherical, or a corresponding member on the top of the rod 26, which extension or ball 30 or similar member is pressed downwardly when the iilters 8 are to be shaken. The upwardly-projecting rod 26, that is connected to the frame 25 advantageously projects up through the filter holder 9 and the intermediate part 4 halfway between the unitcarrying upper parts or covers 1 mounted in the upper part of the intermediate part, while at the same time the frame 25, as Viewed from above, has the shape of an H, the central bar 31 of which is at its middle connected to the upwardly-projecting rod 26 of the frame, and the two side bars 32 carry the upwardly-directed rods 24, the upper ends of which are secured to and carry the supporting rings 21 of the two filters.
The invention is not limited to the different embodiments of the vacuum cleaner shown on the drawing and described above. By way of example a vacuum cleaner in accordance with the invention can be built which is similar to the vacuum cleaner shown in Figs. 5 and 6, but with one unit-carrying upper part of cover 1 and only one filter 8 which partly encloses the unit 2, it being possible to imagine such a vacuum cleaner of a structure similar e. g. to that of Fig. 6 and the right end of Fig. 5, whereby the two dotted lines 33 in Fig. 5 represent the left outer wall of the intermediate part 4 and thereby partly the left outer wall of the dust-container 6, corresponding completely to what is shown to the extreme left in Fig. 5, where the intermediate part 4 at its bottom carries the filter holder 9 and is by the releasable clamping member 5 clamped to the dust-container 6. At the same time the left half of the frame 2S in Figs. 5-8 must be imagined cut away. Furthermore the frame 25 in such a vacuum cleaner having only one unit-carrying upper part and only one filter may be imagined as uniformly constructed at both ends, i. e. carrying at both ends an upwardly-projecting rod 26, as shown in Fig. 5, so that the frame of said vacuum cleaner will have a carryingand shaking-device, acted upon by at least one pressure spring, at two opposite sides of the sole filter 8 of the vacuum cleaner.
In Figs. l and 2 the upper edge of the dust-container 6, and thereby the lower part of the intermediate part 4 with the assembling ring 13 or 23 and the guiding ring 14, may be mounted in such a manner that the rather narrow guiding ring 14 shown in Figs. l and 2 will project below the bottom plate 16 of the filter so that, after the release of the clamping members S, the unit-carrying upperpart 1 and the intermediate part 4 can, as an assembled whole, be placed on a oor. In the vacuum cleaner shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and especially in Figs. 5 and 6, more than two unit-carrying upper parts or covers 1 may be used, and these are then vadvantageously mounted in a ring or circle, the center of which as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, is advantageously placed so as to lie in the axis of the rod 26. If more than two unit-carrying upper parts 1 are used, the cross sections of the intermediate part 4 and the dust-container must be shaped accordingly, e. g. so as to v be of substantially circular cross section. The constructions shown in Fig. 2 with an intermediate part 4 which carries the filter holder 9 at its top may be applied also in vacuum cleaners in accordance with the invention made with two or more unit-carrying upper parts or covers, provided that the intermediate part 4 is shaped substantially as shown e. g. in Figs. 3 and 4, but at its bottom is provided only with a sealing ring 23 and a guiding ring 14 similar to that shown in Fig. 2.
As indicated above, in all the embodiments of the vacuum cleaner of the invention either the filter holder 9 or the intermediate part 4 carries a guiding ring 14 or a number of guiding legs which serve to guide the intermediate piece 4 during its mounting on the dust-container 6. Said guiding ring 14 or said guiding legs may, if it beprefverred, project less far below the intermediate part than the bottom ofthe filter or ilters. In this case the intermediate part 4 can, after having been removed from the dust-container 6, be put aside, e. g. on a oor, so as to rest on the bottom of the filter or the filters 8. Said guiding ring 14 or said guiding legs may, if it be preferred, project suiciently far below the intermediate part that the latter, after having been removed from the dustcontainer, can be put aside, e. g. on a oor, without having the filter or filters 3 touch the surface upon which the intermediate part 4 is placed.
What I claim is:
1. A vacuum cleaner, comprising a vacuumand pressure-case formed from an assembly consisting of at least one unit-carrying upper part, a lter-carrying intermediate part, and a dust container lower part into which the dust-lled air is sucked, said parts of the case being completely separable from one another but cooperating to form the case as an integral, portable assembly, said intermediate part having the form of an annular jacket representing a substantial portion of the height of vsaid case, a filter holder connected to said intermediate part by at least one joint and being supported by said intermediate part by means of said joint, said iilter holder having at least one air passage closed with a filter bag member, with the cavity of the member facing away from the dust container lower part of the case, and said filter member being adapted to be shaken and turned inside out and partly enclosing the unit carried by the upper part, and said intermediate part of the vacuumand pressure-case partly enclosing the filter, first releasable clamping means connecting said intermediate part to said lower part and second releasable clamping means connecting said intermediate part to said upper part.
2. A vacuum cleaner as defined in claim 1, wherein said filter bag member is provided on the side facing said unit with means for turning said member inside out and shaking it.
3. A vacuum cleaner as defined in claim l, wherein the intermediate part and the lter holder are both provided at their bottoms with outwardly directed ring anges which are enclosed by a ring consisting of a yieldable material, said ring clamping said intermediate part and said filter holder together, and said ring serving, when said intermediate part has been clamped to the dust-container, as a sealing ring between the latter two parts of the case of the vacuum cleaner.
4. A vacuum cleaner as delined in claim l, wherein the intermediate part and the filter holder are both provided at their tops with outwardly directed ring anges which are enclosed by a ring consisting of a yieldable material, said ring clamping said intermediate part and said filter holder together, and -said ring, when said intermediate part is clamped together with said unit-carrying upper part of the vacuum cleaner, serves as sealing ring between said intermediate and upper parts of the case of the vacuum cleaner.
5. A vacuum cleaner as defined in claim l, wherein the filter member tapers downwardly towards the bottom and at its tapered end is closed by means of a closing plate.
6. A Vacuum cleaner as defined in claim l, wherein said filter bag member is provided on the side facing said unit with means for turning said filter member inside out and shaking it and said filter holder being connected to at least one guiding member which serves to guide the intermediate part while it is being mounted on the dust container.
7. A vacuum cleaner as defined in claim l, wherein said filter holder is provided with a guiding ange, the outside of said ange having a shape corresponding to that of the inside of the portion of said intermediate part enclosing the filter holder when the latter is connected with the intermediate part, said guiding ange on the ilter holder serving to guide the filter holder when the latter is being mounted on the intermediate part.
8. A vacuum cleaner as defined in claim 7, wherein the guiding member projects sufficiently far below the intermediate part that, when removed from the dust-container, the intermediate part can be pnt aside on a oor without the filter member touching said iioor.
9. A vacuum cleaner as defined in claim 1, further comprising a frame carried below said filter holder in depending position and carrying a plurality of upwardly-directed rods which carry at least one filter supporting ring, so that said filter member is kept in' distended form in its operating position by resting on said filter supporting ring and by engagement with the bottom end of the unit-carrying upper part, a plate closing the bottom of the filter member and supporting said bottom, and an upwardly-projecting shaking rod projecting upwardly through a hole in said filter holder and hole in said intermediate part, said shaking rod being movable vertically so that the frame with the supporting ring can be shaken by motion of said shaking rod.
l0. A vacuum cleaner as defined in claim 9, wherein there are provided at least threeunit-carrying upper parts mounted in a circle, the center of which lies in the axis ofthe shaking rod of the frame.
11. A vacuum cleaner as defined in claim 9, wherein there are provided two unit-carrying upper parts between which the shaking rod of the frame is mounted, said frame having when viewed from above the form of an H, the central bar of which is connected at its center to said shaking rod, and the two side bars of said H carry said upwardly-directed rods which carry twov supporting vrings for two filters.
12. A vacuum cleaner as defined in claim 9, wherein the depending frame is in its normal position supported by at least one pressure spring which serves to keep the frame and the filter supporting ring carried by the latter in their raised positions.
13. A vacuum cleaner as defined in claim 12, wherein said shaking rod has a side projection and the pressure spring is mounted around the shaking rod of the frame with its upper end in engagement with said side projection, the lower end of the spring being in engagement with one of the parts provided with a hole through which the shaking rod projects.
14. A vacuum cleaner, comprising a vacuumand pressure-case formed from at least one unit-carrying upper part, a filter-carrying intermediate part, and a dust-con tainer into which the dust-filled air is sucked, said intermediate part being connected to a filter holder having at least one air passage which is closed with a filter, and said intermediate part being by releasable clamping means clampable in part with said unit-carrying upper part, in part with said dust container, said filter holder being connected with at least one guiding member which serves to guide the intermediate part while it is being mounted on the dust-container, said guiding member projecting to a lesser extent below the intermediate part than the bottom of the filter which through the medium of the filter holder is connected to the intermediate part,
whereby after having been removed from the dust-container, the intermediate part can be put aside on the fioor, resting on the bottom of .said filter.
l5. A vacuum cleaner, comprising a vacuumand pressure-case formed from at least one unit-carrying upper part, a filter-carrying intermediate part, and a dustcontainer into wh-ich the dust-filled air is sucked, said intermediate part `being connected to a filter holder having at least one air passage which is closed with a filter, and said intermediate part being by releasable clamping mea-ns clampable in part with said unit-carrying upper part, in vpart with said dust container, said intermediate part being connected to at least one guiding member, the outside of which has the shape of the inside of the upper part of the du-st container, and said guiding member serving for guiding the intermediate part while it is being mounted on the dust container, said guiding member projecting to a lesser extent below the intermediate part than the bottom of the filter which through the medium of the filter holder is `connected to the intermediate part, whereby after having been removed from the dust-container, the intermediate part can be put aside on the door, resting on the bottom of said filter.
16. A vacuum cleaner, comprising a vacuumand pressure-case formed from at least one unit-carrying upper part, a filter-carrying intermediate part, Aand a dustcontainer into which the dust-filled air is sucked, said intermediate part being connected to a filter holder having at least one air passage which is closed with a filter, said filter being a partly bag-shaped and shakeable filter, and said intermediate part being by releasable clamping means clampable 'in part with said unit-carrying upper part, in part with said dust container, said filter holder at said at least one air passage, which is closed by a filter, having a supported device carrying a lter supporting ring whereby said filter is maintained distended in its operating position in part by resting on said filter supporting ring and in part by the bottom `end of the unitcarrying upper part, the'motor and suction unit of which is partly enclosed by said filter, supported on the bottom of the filter.
