Application September 9, 1952, Serial N 0. 308,657 Claims. or. 132-45 The present invention relates generally to a hair cutting guide and more particularly to a hair cutting contour guide which may be adjusted to suit the style of haircut required.

The primary object of this invention is to provide a hair cutting contour guide which may be applied directly to the hair to provide a guide for cutting the hair to the correct length.

Another object of this invention is to provide a hair cutting guide which may be adjusted for cutting the hair to the length desired for a variety of hair styles, the hair being dry or wet.

Another object of this invention is to provide a hair cutting guide of the type described which may .be used with conventional hairdressing equipment, or even ordinary scissors or a razor, requiring no special apparatus for its operation.

Another object of this invention is to provide a hair cutting guide which may be used by relatively unskilled operators to achieve correct results, and great saving of time is achieved.

Another object of this invention and this disclosure, ancillary to the immediately preceding object, is to teach the best known mode of carrying the invention into actual practice.

Another object of this invention is to provide a hair cutting guide which is adapted for fabrication from many different materials, so that the choice of material can be according to the dictates of availability and price considerations, the exact sizes and proportions being matters easily determined to suit particular conditions and needs.

Finally, it is an object to provide a hair cutting contour guide of the aforementioned character which is simple, safe and convenient to operate, and which will give generally efiicient and durable service.

With these and other objects definitely in view, this invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of elements and portions, as will be hereinafter fully described in the specification, particularly pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the drawings which form a material part of this disclosure and wherein similar characters of reference indicate similar or identical elements and portions throughout the specification and throughout the views of the drawings, and in which:

Fig. 1 is a longitudinal elevation view of the hair cutting contour guide;

Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;

Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1;

Fig. 4 is a longitudinal elevation of the cutting template for use with the hair cutting guide.

Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the hair cutting guide with the cutting template in position.

Fig. 6 is a fragmentary perspective view of the method of attaching the hair cutting guide to the hair in position for cutting.

Fig. 7 is a diagrammatic plan view of a head showing positions in which the hair cutting guide should be placed when using the cutting template.

Fig. 8 is a diagrammatic plan view of a head showing positions in which the hair cutting guide should be placed for a short hair cut using the guide frame only.

Referring now to the drawing in detail, in Fig. 1 there is illustrated a frame 16 having a folded flange 12 at one end and an enlarged portion which is illustrated in the form of a box flange 1 at the other end, said box flange being substantially square in cross section. A clamp 30 is attached to the frame it said clamp having return folds at each end for reinforcing purposes, one of these folds being divided and one section of the divided fold indicated by the numeral 32 comprising a hinge tab used to secure said clamp to said frame by means of a rivet 34. Said rivet is applied loosely so that the clamp 30 may be lifted clear of the frame lit at end 36. The clamp 30 is retained in position against the frame 10 by means of a clip 38 around said clamp and frame and having a catch 49 sufficiently resilient to secure the clamp 36 at its end 36.

A cutting template 42 is illustrated in Fig. 4, this tem plate having one edge 44 at right angles to two parallel edges 46 and 43, the remaining guide edge 50 being at suitable angle to form a guide for cutting the hair. The cutting template 42 may be of varying length as indicated by the edge 52 shown dotted in Fig. 4, the actual length being determined by the style of haircut desired. It will be clear that a very small number of cutting templates of fixed lengths would suffice for a large number of different hair styles. 24 and 28 of the channelled base 16 and the enlarged portion or box flange 14 is slightly resilient thus holding said cutting template rigidly in its correct position as shown in Fig. 5 during use, while allowing easy removal thereof.

In Fig. 6 there is illustrated the method of applying the haircutting guide to the hair. The hair is first parted at the required position and the hair cutting guide is placed vertically on the scalp and shifted progressively along the center of the parting with the lower edge 48 being toward the top or center of the head. The clamp 30 is then disengaged from the catch 40 by pivoting on the rivet 34 and the end 36 is then lifted. The hair is placed between said clamp and the frame 10, and the clamp is then returned to its closed position and secured by the catch 40. The hair extending beyond the cutting edge of the cutting template 42 is then cut or? leaving the ends of the hair at the correct length and contour, said length being dependent on the length of the cutting template in use. A short haircut may be obtained by using the hair cutting guide without a cutting template, in which case the hair cutting guide is applied to the hair as previously described and the outer edge 56 of the clamp 30 is used as a guide for cutting the hair.

Fig. 7 illustrates the positions for parting the hair for a long or medium length haircut. The hair is first parted at the crown from ear to ear and the front hair is secured with bobby pins or the like. The lower neck line sections are now cut, using a short cutting template, the hair cutting guide being placed at each parting line 58 as previously described. The crown hair is out next using a longer cutting template, the hair being parted as required in the direction of lines 60 and the hair cutting guide being applied as described. Finally the top and side hair is cut, once more using the shorter cutting template and parting the hair in the direction of lines 62.

If a short haircut is desired, the hair may be parted as indicated by lines 64 in Fig. 8, the hair cutting guide being used without a cutting template as previously described.

The operation of this invention will be clearly comprehended from a consideration of the foregoing description of the mechanical details thereof, taken in connection with the drawing and the above recited objects. It will be obvious that all said objects are amply achieved by this invention.

Further description would appear to be unnecessary.

It is understood that minor variation from the form of the invention disclosed herein may be made without departure from the spirit and scope of the invention, and that the specification and drawings are to be considered as merely illustrative rather than limiting.

I claim:

1. In a hair cutting guide, a generally rectangular frame having a slightly resilient enlarged end portion, a channelled base member frictionally held in fixed position on said end portion, said base member having a fiat scalpcontacting surface substantially normal to the plane of said frame, a clamp shiftably mounted on said frame, whereby a lock of hair can be fastened between the clamp and the frame with portions of the hair extending beyond the clamp and frame in position for shearing along the edge of said clamp remote from said base member.

2. In a hair cutting guide, a generally rectangular frame having a slightly resilient enlarged end portion, a channelled base member frictionally held in fixed position on said end portion, said base member having a flat scalpcontacting surface substantially normal to the plane of said frame, a template removably attached to and extending from said frame, said template having a cutting guide edge on the end thereof remote from said base member, a clamp shiftably mounted on said frame whereby a lock of hair can be fastened between the clamp and the frame with portions of the hair extending beyond the clamp and frame in position for shearing along said cutting guide edge.

3. In a hair cutting guide, a generally rectangular frame having a slightly resilient enlarged end portion, a chan nelled base member frictionally held in fixed position on said end portion, said base member having a flat scalpcontacting surface substantially normal to the plane of said frame, a template removably attached to and extending from said frame, said template having a cutting guide edge on the end thereof remote from said base member, said cutting guide edge being inclined relative to said scalpcontacting surface, a clamp shiftably mounted on said frame whereby a lock of hair can be fastened between the clamp and the frame with portions of the hair extending beyond the clamp and frame in position for shearing along said cutting guide edge.

4. A hair cutting guide according to claim 2 wherein said clamp is a fiat bar extending across said frame and pivoted. at one end to the frame, and a clip engageable with said clamp and said frame to hold the clamp fixed relative to the frame when a lock of hair is clamped there between.

5. A hair cutting guide according to claim 2 wherein the end of the template remote from said cutting guide edge is frictionally held between said enlarged end portion and a portion of said base member.
