9 Claims. (Cl. 220113) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in carton bodies formed of heavy paper, cardboard or the like, and more particularly to those types of carrier cartons adapted to accommodate a predetermined number of bottles.
For the retail sale of bottled beverages in less than case lots the practice has arisen of supplying the retailer with cardboard or heavy paper bottle carrying cases having metal or cardboard handles, thereby eliminating the 0bjection to packaging of such bottles in ordinary grocers bags or other containers not adapted to their reception. Most such bottle carrying cases heretofore used have been limited to accommodate six bottles. Because the usual heavy paper or cardboard materials employed in bottle carton manufacture are not characterized by great strength, no successful bottle carrying carton has been advanced which will satisfactorily accommodate a number of filled bottles in excess of six.
This invention has as its primary object the provision of a compact cardboard or heavy paper bottle carrying handled carton which will safely accommodate twelve bottles. By satisfying this increased bottle carrying objective, the carton is characterized by improved structural details which provide increased strength and rigidity thereby assuring safety in handling these easily breakable commodities.
Accordingly, it is an object of my invention to provide a structurally improved carrier carton formed from a rectangular box blank having two centrally disposed carrying portions fixed together in abutting face to face relation. From each such central handle-forming or carrying portion a receptacle is suspended by folding integral wall members about their respective carrying portion to define, together with such carrying portion, vertical side walls for the receptacle. Bottom sections are provided integral with oppositely facing wall members. Partitioning of each receptacle into bottle carrying cells is accomplished by separator members on the bottom sections folded into the receptacle and by projections integral with the remaining oppositely facing Wall members which are passed through slots in the bottom sections into the receptacle.
Other and further objects, features, and advantages will be apparent from the description which follows, when read in connection With the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 isa plan view of the blank for my improved bottle carrying carton;

In order to facilitate an understanding of the invention, reference is made to the embodiments thereof shown in the accompanying drawings and detailed descriptive language is employed. It will nevertheless be understood that no limitation of the invention is thereby intended and that various changes and alterations are contemplated such as would ordinarily occur to one skilled in the art to which the invention relates.
Referring to the drawings, in Figure 1 there is shown a blank for my improved carton. In the blank are two central carrying portions 1 and 1' which are adapted to be folded together in abutting face-to-face relation along line 2 to form a central dividing wall from which two receptacles, having six bottle cells each, are supported. Carrying portion 1 has an elongated aperture 3 therein to define, with the adjacent areas of portion 1, a handle or grip means. A corresponding tab 4 is stamped from portion 1'. Connected to a vertical edge of portions 1 and 1 are integrally aligned outside walls 5, 6, and 7 and 5, 6, and 7', respectively. Affixed to each such outside wall are doubling panels 8, 9, and 10 and 8', 9, and 10, respectively. These panels are adapted to be folded inwardly of the carton to double or reinforce the outer walls and serve as inner carton wall members or liners. Projecting from portions 1 and 1 are bottom sections 11 and 11', each such section having elongated slits 12, 13, and 12', 13, respectively. Identical bottom sections 14 and 14 having elongated slits 15 and 16 and 15 and 16', respectively, are projected from outside walls 6 and 6'. Extended on bottom sections 11 and 11' are separator walls 17 and 17 having elongated cut- outs 18 and 19 and 18' and 19, respectively, these side walls and bottom sections together defining sub-receptacles suspended from either side of assembled central carrying portions 1 and 1', respectively. Identical separator walls 20 and 20 having cut-outs 21, 22 and 21', 22' are extended from bottom sections 14 and 14. Separator walls or projections 17 and 20 and 17 and 20 are adapted to be folded together in abutting face-to-face relation to form a longitudinal partition for the receptacles on either side of assembled main partition and carrying portions 1 and 1, thereby defining with the side walls and center carrying portions two longitudinal sub-receptacles or enclosures in each receptacle. To divide these sub-receptacles into bottle carrying cells, division walls 23, 24 and 23', 24' having intermediate portions 25', 26 and 25', 26 are provided. These intermediate portions are integral with and extend from side Walls 5, 7 and 5, 7' respectively. Tabs 27 and 27 extend from portions 1 and 1 and are adapted to be fixed to the outer edges of side walls 7 and 7', respectively, of the assembled carton.
Initially in setting up the carton, the blank is folded along line 2 so that center carrying portions 1 and 1 are in contenninous face-to-face relation. The carrying portions are fixed together preferably by staples as at 28, 29, and 30, in Figures 5 and 6 to form a central dividing wall or double partition.
Next the various parts of the blank are folded and assembled together to form two bottle carrying receptacles, one supported on each side of the central dividing wall formed by portions 1 and 1. The procedures for assembling each such receptacle are identical, the following description referring only to that receptacle formed from the lower half of the blank shown in Figure 1, it being understood that the following assembly procedure applies equally well to the receptacle formed from the upper half of the blank.
After the central carrying portions are fixed in faceto-face relation, doubling panels 8, 9, and 10 are folded forwardly and downwardly to lie along the broken lines a, b, and c in Figure 1, thereby forming double walls forth SiQ S 5, 6 and 7, respectively. At this point the receptacle is in the position shown in Figurcs'Z and 3. As may be seen in these figures, the main receptacle is outlined by central carrying portion 1 and sides 5, 6 and 7 which define vertical walls presenting a rectangular section along the horizontal and bottom sections 11 and 14. This receptacle is divided into two elongated enclosures by separator projections 17 and 20.
To complete the bottle carrying receptacle, staples 31.(Figure 6) are employed to secure side 7 .to tab 27, and reach elongated sub-enclosure formed by separator walls 17 and '20 is partitioned to form three bottle carrying cells. Partitioning is accomplished by bending division walls 23 and 24 inwardly of the receptacle so that theylie parallel to bottom sections 11 and 14. Wall 24 is then passed through slits 12 and 16 on bottom sections 11 and 14, respectively, by bending intermediate portion 26 inwardly of the receptacle so that it is in face-to-face relation with bottom sections 11 and 14. Referring to Figure 5, the division wall 24 is then in interlocking relationship with separator projections 17 and 20-by reception or interlocking of aperture 33 on projection 23 in adjoining cut- outs 18 and 22 of separator projections -17 and 20 respectively. An identical bottle carrying receptacle may be formed on-the other side of center dividing wall formed by carrying portions l and 1 by folding and assembling the top half of the blank shown in Figure 1 about center a carrying portion 1' according to the procedure hereinbefore described. For ease of handling, tab 14 may be bent upwar'dly through aperture 3 to complete the handle.
A bottle carrying carton is then assembled conforming to the views shown in Figures 4, 5 and 6, this carton possessing increased bottle handling requirements because of the double wall construction of all weight supporting members. 'The carton may be assembled and formed with great ease, from a single rectangular box blank, thereby preventing undue material wastage.
Having thus described my invention, What is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is: 1. In a carrier carton formed from a rectangular box blank; two vertically folded central carrying portions fixed together in conterminous face-to-face relation and two receptacles, each receptacle projecting laterally and supportedby one of said central carrying portions and comprising three integral walls folded about their respective central carrying portion and fixed thereto along the vertical outside edges of said central carrying portion to define with said central carrying portion vertical receptacle sides having a rectangular horizontal section, a bottom section integral with a first receptacle .side with a separatorprojection therQ n, and abottom. section integ'ral .witha second receptacle side ,oppositely facing said first mentioned side having a separator projection thereon, said bottom sections being folded in abutting 'co plan'anrelation,"and saidseparator projections being folded inwardly of the receptacle in a plane parallel to said first and second receptacle sides, and means to maintain said separator projections in overlapping coplanar relation to define two enclosures within each receptacle.

In a carrier carton iormed from a rectangular box bla k, two vertically folded central carrying portions fixed together in conterminous face=to-face relation and two receptacles, eachreceptacle projecting laterally and supported by one of said central carrying portions and comprising three integral double walls folded about their respective central carrying'portion and fixed thereto along the vertical outside edges of said central carrying portion to define with said central carrying portion vertical receptacle sides having a rectangular horizontal section, a bottom section integral with a first receptacle side with a separator projection thereon, and a bottom section integral with a second receptacle side oppositely facing ai fi st moutionosl' e ha i a Separator Projection thereon, said bottom sections being folded in abutting co-planar relation, and said separator projections being folded inwardly of the receptacle in planes parallel to said lirstand second receptacle sides and means to maintain said separatorprojections in conterminous face-toface relation ,todefine two enclosures in each receptacle.

5. In a carrier carton formed from a rectangular box blank, two vertically folded central carrying portions fixed together in conterminous face-to-face relation having elongated apertures in the upper portions thereof to inwardly'of the receptacle 7 form handle portions and two receptacles, each receptacle projecting laterally and supported by one of said central carrying portions and comprising three integral walls, folded about their respective central carrying portion and fixed thereto along vertical outside edges of said central carrying portion to define with said central carrying portion four vertical receptacle sides having a rectangular horizontal section, separator projections having bottom sections integral with a first and second oppositely facing receptacle sides, and division walls integral with the remaining third and fourth oppositely facing receptacle sides, said bottom sections being folded in abutting coplanar relation and said separator projections being folded inwardly of the receptacle to conterminous face-to-face relation in planes parallel to said first and second receptacle sides and dividing said receptacle into two enclosures, said division walls passing upwardly through said bottom sections and normal to said separator projections to divide said enclosures into individual carrying cells.

In a carrier carton formed from a rectangular box blank, two vertically folded central carrying portions fixed together in conterminous face-to-face relation and two receptacles, each receptacle projecting laterally and supported by one of said central carrying portions and comprising three integral walls folded about their respective central carrying portion and fixed thereto along the vertical outside edges of said central carrying portion to define with said central carrying portion vertical receptacle sides having a rectangular horizontal section, a bottom section integral with said central carrying portion having a separator projection thereon and a bottom section integral with the receptacle side oppositely facing said central carrying portion having a separator projection thereon, elongated slits in said bottom sections extending normally to said central carrying portion and its oppositely facing receptacle side, elongated cut-outs on said separator projections in substantial alignment with said bottom section slits, said bottom sections being folded in abutting co-planar relation, and said separator projections being folded inwardly of the receptacle to face-to-face relation in planes parallel to said central carrying portion and means to maintain said separator projections in face-toface relation to define two enclosures in said receptacle, said last mentioned means comprising division walls integral with the receptacle sides normal to said central carrying portion, said division walls passing through said slits upwardly into the receptacle and normal to said sepa rator walls to divide said receptacle enclosures into bottle carrying cells, and elongated central apertures on said division walls in interlocking relation with said cut-outs on the separator projections.

In a carrier carton formed from a rectangular box blank, two vertically folded central carrying portions fixed together in conterminous face-to-face relation and two receptacles, each receptacle projecting laterally and supported by one of said central carrying portions and comprising three integral double walls folded about their respective central carrying portion to define with said central carrying portion vertical receptacle sides having a rectangular horizontal section, a bottom section integral with said central carrying portion having a separator projection thereon and a bottom section integral with the receptacle side oppositely facing said central carrying portion having a separator projection thereon, elongated slits in said bottom sections extending normal to said central carrying portion and its oppositely facing receptacle side, elongated cut-outs on said separator projections in substantial alignment with said bottom section slits, said bottom sections being folded in abutting co-planar relation, and said separator projections being folded inwardly of the receptacle to face-to-face relation in planes parallel to said central carrying portion, and means to maintain said separator projections in face-to-face relation to define two enclosures in said receptacle, said last mentioned means comprising division walls integral with the receptacle sides normal to said central carrying portion, said division walls passing through said slits upwardly into the receptacle and normal to said separator walls to divide said receptacle enclosures into bottle carrying cells, and elongated central apertures on said division walls in interlocking relation with said cut-outs on the separator projections.
8. In a box blank for a carrier carton, two central carrying portions to be folded together in conterminous faceto-face relation and receptacle forming portions integral with each said central carrying portion, each said receptacle forming portion comprising aligned walls extending laterally from their respective central carrying portion to define with said central carrying portion vertical wall members, bottom sections having projected separator walls and extending from the lower margins of two said vertical walls adapted to be oppositely facing, intermediate portions having projected division walls and extending from the other two said vertical walls adapted to be oppositely facing, vertical apertures extending from the lower margins of said division walls, and elongated vertical cut-outs in said bottom sections and separator Walls.

In a box blank for a carrier carton, two central carrying portions adapted to be folded together in conterminous face-to-face relation and receptacle forming portions integral with each said central carrying portion, each said receptacle forming portion comprising aligned walls extending laterally from their respective central carrying portion to define with said central carrying portion vertical wall members, bottom sections having projected separator walls and extending from the lower margins of said central carrying portion and the vertical wall adapted to be oppositely facing said carrying portion, intermediate portions having projected division walls and extending from the other two said vertical walls adapted to be oppositely facing, vertical apertures extending from the lower margins of said division walls, and elongated vertical cut-outs in said bottom sections and separator walls.
